Nivenia is a genus of 9 species placed in the family Iridaceae. Nivenia is a South African endemic genus with most species found in the Western Cape Province. The genus name is a tribute to the Scottish botanist James Niven, one of the first to collect the genus. Nivenia belongs to a group of plants known as the woody irises, which also include two other genera, Klattia and Witsenia. The 13 species in these genera are all evergreen shrubs which characteristically have the woody stems and a woody underground caudex (swollen woody underground organ from which stems arise).           Nivenia corymbosa is a shrublet which grows to a height of 0.5 to 2 m. The stems are erect to inclined, several growing from the base of the plant. The younger stems are 5-6 mm in diameter with the older stems reaching to 30 mm in diameter at the base. The narrow, lanceolate leaves are sword-shaped and are x 8 mm. The inflorescence or corymb is large and has about 120 flowers borne on a terminal cluster. The flowers are usually pale to deep blue and appear from late January to March. Seed should be sown in autumn and treated with smoke seed primer for best results. Sow in a well-drained, acidic soil medium consistent with that used for other fynbos plants.

Lophospermum is a genus of herbaceous perennial climbers or scramblers, native to mountainous regions of Mexico and Guatemala. Those that climb use twining leaf stalks. Their flowers are tubular, in shades of red, violet and purple, the larger flowers being pollinated by hummingbirds. Now placed in the greatly expanded family Plantaginaceae, the genus was traditionally placed in the Scrophulariaceae. The close relationship with some other genera, particularly Maurandya and Rhodochiton, has led to confusion over the names of some species. Lophospermum erubescens and Lophospermum scandens are cultivated as ornamental plants, as climbers or trailers. Lophospermum species are herbaceous perennial climbers with fibrous roots.         They climb by means of twining leaf stalks (petioles) rather than tendrils or twining stems. The long stems are branched, becoming woody at the base with age. In some species the stems grow from a woody caudex – a swollen, bulb-like structure at the base of the stem. The leaves are triangular or heart-shaped with a pointed apex and toothed edges (crenate or dentate). Both stems and leaves may have a purplish colour. Lophospermum erubescens, known as Mexican twist or creeping gloxinia, is a climbing or sprawling herbaceous perennial, native to the Sierra Madre Oriental mountains of Mexico, where it is found along forest margins or canyon walls. It climbs by means of twining leaf stalks. Wild plants have pink and white tubular flowers, although other colours are found in cultivation. It has been cultivated as an ornamental plant since at least 1830. Although not frost-hardy, it will survive if its base and roots are protected from freezing in the winter.

Strelitzia is a genus of five species of perennial plants, indigenous to South Africa. The name Strelitzia was given to honour Queen Charlotte, the wife of King George III of England. She was from the house of Mecklenburg-Strelitz. A common name of the genus is bird of paradise flower, because of a supposed resemblance of its flowers to the bird of paradise. In South Africa it is commonly known as a crane flower. The flowers are ideal for cut flowers and last up to 20 days in a vase. They can all be grown in large pots or tubs but will require regular feeding and irrigation. There are three tree-like Strelitzia species Strelitzia alba, Strelitzia caudata and Strelitzia nicolai. The other two species Strelitzia reginae and Strelitzia juncea are shrub-like tufted clump-forming species. In Kirstenbosch released a yellow variety of Strelitzia reginae which in was named Mandela’s Gold in honour of Nelson Mandela. Strelitzias are easy plants to grow in the garden. Plants do well in full sun to semi-shade, love a rich loamy soil and plenty of water throughout the year. They respond well to regular feeding with a slow release fertilizer and compost. They are however very tolerant plants and will thrive in most soils and can survive with very little water once established. The plants are also wind resistant and grow well in coastal gardens. Strelitzias are sensitive to cold and would need a sheltered position in areas with frost as the flowers and leaves are often damaged by frost. In very cold climates it is better to grow them in pots that could be moved indoors when freezing temperatures are expected. Strelitzia nicolai, commonly known as the Natal wild banana, White Bird of Paradise, Wild Banana or Giant Bird of Paradise, are evergreen banana-like plants, related to the well-known crane flower, Strelitzia reginae, that have erect woody, palm like stems reaching a height of 12 m and the clumps formed can spread as far as 4 m. The 1.8 m long leaves are grey-green and arranged like a fan at the top of the stems. Although not related to the true bananas or the wild banana Ensete ventricosum, the leaves and growth habit of Strelitzia nicolai are somewhat similar and probably account for the common name. The inflorescence is composed of a dark blue bract, white sepals and a bluish-purple "tongue". The entire flower can be as much as 18 cm high by 45 cm long and is typically held just above the point where the leaf fan emerges from the stem.

Protea is both the botanical name and the English common name of a genus of South African flowering plants, sometimes also called sugarbushes in Eglish and Suikerbos in Afrikaans. The genus Protea was named after the Greek god Proteus, who could change his form at will, because plants within this genus have such a wide variety of forms. The Proteaceae family to which proteas belong is an ancient one. Its ancestors grew in Gondwana, 300 million years ago. Most protea occur south of the Limpopo River. 92% of the species occur only in the Cape Floristic Region, a narrow belt of mountainous coastal land from Clanwilliam to Grahamstown, South Africa. They are evergreen shrubs or trees usually found in fynbos. Protea blossoms make excellent cut flowers, keeping their colour for up to three weeks.           In the garden they do well in rockeries and also make excellent feature plants. An added attraction during flowering time is the numerous birds attracted to the plants. Other well-known genera of the Proteaceae are Aulax with brightly coloured pincushion flowers, Leucospermum also known as pincushions, Leucadendron with decorative woody cones and Serruria, of which Serruria florida, the blushing bride, with its beautiful pale pink flowers is the most well-known, Spatalla and Telopea with its unique bright flowers. Protea neriifolia commonly known as Blue Sugarbush, Narrow-leaved Sugarbush or Oleander-leaved Sugarbush in English and Baardsuikerbos, Baardsuikerkan, Blousuikerbos, Blou-suikerbos, Blousuikerkan, Roosboom or Suikerbos in Afrikaans is a South African endemic species naturally found growing in the Eastern Cape Province. It grows to a 3m shrub with narrow oblong leaves. Flowers are creamy-green to deep pink in winter, beard white to purple-black. Good cut flower. It tolerates a wide range of soils and is easy to grow.

Hermannia filifolia var grandicalyx  15 seeds  "SA shrub" Hermannia is a genus of small shrubs, ranging from upright to sprawling prostrate shrublets. They are charachterized by the presence of minute glandular or star-like hairs on the leaves and stems. The stems often have a dark grey bark. Leaves are alternate and entire, lobed or incised. Flowers consist of 5 petals which are slightly or very strongly spirally twisted into an upended rose. Most Hermannia species posess a thick woody stem and root, forming an underground stem, which enables the plants to survive dry periods and fires. In the veld, hermannias appear woody, some species being very palatable to stock and browsed down to the main branches. Flowers in loose, spike-like groups at tips of branches. Corolla deep red to maroon.

Drosera commonly known as the sundews comprises one of the largest genera of carnivorous plants, with at least 171 species around the world. The genus includes annuals and perennials, large and small plants, and denizens of tropical, temperate, and polar habitats. Some of the showiest species are from the botanically rich Cape Province of South Africa. They should not be confused with the ever popular Venus Fly Trap, Dionaea muscipula. These members of the family Droseraceae lure, capture, and digest insects using stalked mucilaginous glands covering their leaf surfaces. The insects are used to supplement the poor mineral nutrition of the soil in which they grow. Both the botanical name and the English common name refer to the glistening drops of mucilage at the tip of each tentacle that resemble drops of morning dew. Drosera has also been recorded for its medicinal use against warts, corns and sunburn.            Ethnobotanically a tea made from the plant was also used as a tranquilizer and aphrodisiac. Whether indigenous or exotic, Sundews deserve a little corner in all carnivorous plant collections. They make fascinating indoor houseplants. These curiosity plants grow best in pots filled with a mix of Canadian Sphagnum Peat Moss, Vermiculite and Horticultural Perlite. They can also be grown in our general Carnivorous Growing Medium. Drosera capensis commonly known as the Cape Sundew is a South African endemic species found exclusively in the Eastern Cape and Western Cape Provinces. It is the most common sundew in cultivation, since it is so easy to grow. Drosera capensis is a free-flowering, robust, carnivorous, evergreen perennial, of varying height, but usually around 15cm. The short, woody stems are rhizomatous below with well-developed roots. From December to January the , simple, pink-mauve flowers are borne on a single stem and mature in ascending order.

Fouquieria is a genus of 11 species of desert plants and the sole genus in the family Fouquieriaceae. The genus includes the ocotillo (Fouquieria splendens) and the boojum tree or cirio (Fouquieria columnaris). They have semi- succulent stems with thinner spikes projecting from them and with leaves on the bases of the spikes. They are unrelated to cacti and do not look much like them; their stems are proportionately thinner than cactus stems and their leaves are larger.           These plants are native to northern Mexico and the bordering US states of Arizona, southern California, New Mexico, and parts of south-western Texas, favouring low, arid hillsides. The genus is named after French physician Pierre Fouquier (). The spines of Fouquieria develop in an unusual way, from a woody thickening on the outer (lower) side of the leaf petiole, which remains after the leaf blade and most of the petiole separate and fall from the plant. They grow well in pots and rockeries but sufficient drainage and a well-drained soil mix is of the utmost importance to avoid rot. Fouquieria species need full sun to high interior lighting if grown as an indoor plant. The flowers are pollinated by hummingbirds or carpenter bees. Fouquieria splendens commonly known as ocotillo, but also referred to as coachwhip, candlewood, slimwood, desert coral, Jacob's Staff, Jacob Cactus, and vine cactus is a plant native to the Sonoran Desert and Chihuahuan Desert in the Southwestern United States and northern Mexico. Ocotillo is not a true cactus. The bright crimson flowers appear especially after rainfall in spring, summer, and occasionally autumn.

PHILODEDRON SELLOUM   Most philodendrons are climbers, but not this one. Philodendron Selloum (also called split leaf philodendron) grows as a large semi woody shrub with enormous glossy leaves and a single erect unbranched stem. The robust stem bears stout aerial rootlets between conspicuous leaf scars. The leaves are up to 0.9 m long, deeply dissected into many wavy-margined lobes and held on long petioles. Older and larger plants develop leaves that are more deeply dissected and more ruffled. Specimens grown indoors rarely flower. Philodendron can get as large as 4.6 m tall and 4.6 m wide with a stem 17.8 cm or more in diameter.   Philodendron grows best in fairly moist, well drained, fertile soil. It requires little care except occasional grooming should lower leaves become discoloured, and watering in times of dry weather. Take care in placing, though, lest it encroach on walkways or grow too close to buildings; a small specimen will get big! Light: Philodendrons don't like full sun. Grow tree philodendron in dappled or partial shade. Indoors, position in bright light, but not direct sun. Sunlight filtered through a curtain is good. Moisture: Not at all drought tolerant, tree philodendron should get regular watering. Keep the soil moderately moist by watering regularly. In the winter, keep the soil just barely moist. Dasylirion is a genus of 17 species of grassy looking rosette plants in the family Ruscaceae, all native to northern Mexico, with three species also extending into the south-western United States. They are not grasses but are related to the Agaves. As they grow older, the bases of several species develop into a beautiful trunk. When the plants are mature they send out blooms with hundreds of greenish-white bell-shaped flowers on a tall narrow spike coming from the center of the plant.  Unlike most Agaves they do not die after blooming. Most Dasylirion species are reasonably resistant to cold and drought. Dasylirion longissimum commonly known as the Mexican Grass Tree is a large plant native to North-eastern Mexico with glaucous-green stiff unarmed grass-like 1.8m long leaves. The leaves radiate symmetrically out of a large woody trunk that can slowly but eventually grow 1.8 to 4.5m tall. In summer, a nine foot tall spike of small white flowers emerge from reddish buds. Plant it in full sun to light shade. It is drought tolerant and cold hardy to at least -12°C and makes a great container plant or focal point specimen in the garden. The older, bottom leaves can be trimmed off to expose the trunk.

  Leucadendron is a genus of about 80 species of flowering plants in the family Proteaceae, endemic to South Africa, where they are a prominent part of the fynbos vegetation. They are evergreen shrubs or small trees growing up to 116 m tall. The leaves are spirally arranged, simple, entire, and usually green, often covered with a waxy bloom, and in the case of the Silvertree, with a distinct silvery tone produced by dense silky hairs. The flowers are produced in dense inflorescences; they are dioecious, with separate male and female plants.
