The Farm Bathurst was established around 1822 and has a wide variety of wild animals that roam freely, just like they would in their natural habitat, with approximately 125 hectares of space to their beck and call. The grass veld and acacia trees are in abundance and provide grazing for the animals. We are particularly proud of our two giraffe, male and female, who have over time become quite accustomed to humans and will let you within 30 m of them before moving off. Other animals on the farm include black wildebeest, impala, springbok, blesbok, red hartebeest, mountain reedbuck, duiker, and grysbok. We were also fortunate to have the golden mongoose and mountain tortoise relocated here after being rescued, and at last count we saw 44 mountain tortoise and nine golden mongoose making the farm their home. This is also a bird-lover’s paradise and there are various resident ducks on the dam. Spoonbills and spurwing geese are regular visitors and other species include kori bustards, blue cranes and if you are lucky you will see a pair of secretary birds.
