The orchid, that most delicate and architectural of blooms, finally has a home designed specifically to optimise its growth. With two bowls nested in one, the plant well and the water well, and filaments joining the plant well and the water well, the aerophytic orchid can pull exactly the amount of moisture it needs from the water below. Never again will you drown (or dehydrate) your delicate orchid. Simply remove from the pot you bought it in, shake any soil loose and pop in into the top well of the pot. Add some orchid growing medium (they are aerophytes, so it's ok if some roots stand outside the growing medium), and use the hole on the side to add water to the well beneath. As long as you keep some water in the well at all times, and feed the plant at the recommended intervals, it should thrive. Voila!

Success with citrusTo achieve the best growth and a bountiful harvest, bear in mind the following:Plant in full sun in well-drained soilThe roots of citrus require more oxygen than many other trees so make sure that the soil drains well and is never waterlogged. The best soil for citrus is moderately heavy loam mixed with a good amount of decayed manure and sand. Heavy clay soils are not suitable. The soil in containers should be a fibrous loam enriched with dried cow manure and a tablespoon of bonemeal.Water regularlyCitrus trees need regular watering particularly during the time they are flowering and setting fruit, when the soil should be kept moist at all times. For the rest of the year, make sure that the trees do not dry out completely. To conserve moisture, keep the root area well mulched at all times, preferably with compost.Fertilise correctlyApply a balanced fertiliser that has a high nitrogen and medium potassium level in July, December and March. During the first few years of growth, give the tree 300g at each application. In subsequent years gradually increase this amount to 2,5kg for a mature, large citrus tree. In addition, give the tree 75g of Epsom salts (magnesium sulphate) three times a year. First put down a mulch of compost and then spread the fertiliser around the trunk, going as far out as the drip line of the branches. Water well after application.Prune when necessaryIn recent years it has been proved that pruning citrus can be beneficial for fruit production when it is done in such a way as to let more light penetrate the canopy of the tree. Always prune after fruiting, and carry out many smaller branch prunings, rather than removing just a few larger branches. Aim to have four to six well-positioned, scaffold branches by the first year of bearing. (Scaffold branches are branches that grow laterally from a tree trunk and that provide the framework of the mature tree). In subsequent years, remove ‘extra’ scaffold branches and thorny water shoots, as well as any suckers.Protect from pestsKeep your citrus safe from pests, the most common of which is citrus psylla. An infestation results in a swelling on the upper leaf caused by insects underneath the leaf. Citrus psylla affects mainly young trees. Spray with Biogrow’s eco-friendly Pyrol or Bioneem, or Efekto’s Natural Insecticide. Less common are the orange dog caterpillar, which can be removed by hand, or spray them with Pyrol or Bioneem, and red and brown scale which can be sprayed with Pyrol, Oleum or Dursban 2E.

The bitter sap in the leaves of Aloe greatheadii var davyana is used medicinally for the treatment of wounds, sores and burns. Aloe greatheadii var. davyana commonly known as Spotted Aloe has shiny green leaves that are spotted and forms a spreading rosette. This aloe flowers in mid-winter from June to July. It has sharp brown teeth on the leaf margins. It grows easily from seed and also transplants well. It is particularly striking when planted in groups. Aloes are very popular and some of the most rewarding plants to cultivate. They make excellent accent plants owing to their often strange and inspiring architectures, as well as the bright flowers that offset the grey-green leaves. They are also very suitable as container plants and small aloes can be used very effectively as border plants at the edge of a bed. Although aloes are most often included in rockeries, their application in horticulture is not limited to this feature and they can be used in almost any setting and in conjunction with most common garden plants. More about the Aloe genus below. Their natural adaptation to harsh and often arid climates makes aloes outstanding subjects for the water-wise garden. Aloes can tolerate long periods of drought, but it is not true that watering should be withheld to obtain optimal growth. Stressed plants are more susceptible to insects and pests. Plants flourish, flower better and are more resistant when given adequate water during the growing season. However, be very cautious not to overwater aloes because they may rot if they stay wet for too long. Adequate drainage is essential. Plant smaller aloes in raised beds and only water them when the top 5cm of soil has dried. Even though there are some species that are challenging to grow, most of the aloes are easy and can readily be grown just about any place in the country. Aloes generally need soils with good drainage and do best in warm climates. When planted in rich soil that are frequently mulched they will do well for many years without interference making them very low-maintenance plants once established. Aloe is a genus in the Asphodeloideae family containing about 600 species of flowering succulent plants. The most common and well known of these is Aloe vera. The genus is mostly native to Africa with about 125 being indigenous to South Africa. About 405 species can be found in Africa while about 45 species are found in the Arabian Peninsula. Socotra has 4 natural species and the Mascarene and other Western Indian Ocean Islands share about 7 species. Madagascar, for its size, has a pretty extensive collection of about 145 species. Aloes are sometimes confused with Agaves. Contrarily to Agaves, Aloe leaves contain a gel like sap. Another difference is that Aloes don't die after blooming as most Agaves do. For an extensive list of documented Aloe species please see this Wikipedia page.

Aloe grandidentata commonly known as Dwarf Soap Aloe is a low-growing species that is often mistaken for Aloe maculata but can be distinguished by its smaller size which is about one third of that of the Soap Aloe. A low-growing profile and suckering habit make it useful as a ground cover and since it is drought tolerant it becomes the perfect candidate for landscaping around areas with demanding tree roots. This succulent aloe plant is cold hardy and not sensitive to frost. Aloes are very popular and some of the most rewarding plants to cultivate. They make excellent accent plants owing to their often strange and inspiring architectures, as well as the bright flowers that offset the grey-green leaves. Strelitzia is a genus of five species of perennial plants, indigenous to South Africa. The name Strelitzia was given to honour Queen Charlotte, the wife of King George III of England. She was from the house of Mecklenburg-Strelitz. A common name of the genus is bird of paradise flower, because of a supposed resemblance of its flowers to the bird of paradise. In South Africa it is commonly known as a crane flower. The flowers are ideal for cut flowers and last up to 20 days in a vase. They can all be grown in large pots or tubs but will require regular feeding and irrigation. There are three tree-like Strelitzia species Strelitzia alba, Strelitzia caudata and Strelitzia nicolai. The other two species Strelitzia reginae and Strelitzia juncea are shrub-like tufted clump-forming species. In Kirstenbosch released a yellow variety of Strelitzia reginae which in was named Mandela’s Gold in honour of Nelson Mandela.           Strelitzias are easy plants to grow in the garden. Plants do well in full sun to semi-shade, love a rich loamy soil and plenty of water throughout the year. They respond well to regular feeding with a slow release fertilizer and compost. They are however very tolerant plants and will thrive in most soils and can survive with very little water once established. The plants are also wind resistant and grow well in coastal gardens. Strelitzias are sensitive to cold and would need a sheltered position in areas with frost as the flowers and leaves are often damaged by frost. In very cold climates it is better to grow them in pots that could be moved indoors when freezing temperatures are expected. Strelitzia reginae is a bold structural plant, which forms large evergreen clumps of stiff leaves growing up from the base. The grey-green banana-like leaves grow about 1,5 m in height and the flowers stand above the foliage at the tips of long stalks. Mature plants are very floriferous with flowers in autumn, winter and spring. The structure and pollination of the flowers are rather interesting. The hard, beak-like sheath from which the flower emerges, is called the spathe. This is placed at right angles to the stem, which gives it the appearance of a bird's head. When the birds sit to have a drink of nectar, the petals open to cover their feet in pollen.

Strelitzia nicolai, commonly known as the Natal wild banana, White Bird of Paradise, Wild Banana or Giant Bird of Paradise, are evergreen banana-like plants, related to the well-known crane flower, Strelitzia reginae, that have erect woody, palm like stems reaching a height of 12 m and the clumps formed can spread as far as 4 m. The 1.8 m long leaves are grey-green and arranged like a fan at the top of the stems. Although not related to the true bananas or the wild banana Ensete ventricosum, the leaves and growth habit of Strelitzia nicolai are somewhat similar and probably account for the common name. The inflorescence is composed of a dark blue bract, white sepals and a bluish-purple "tongue". The entire flower can be as much as 18 cm high by 45 cm long and is typically held just above the point where the leaf fan emerges from the stem.

Aloe aculeata is easily identified from other similar species by the noticeable tuberculate spines on the leaves. Aloe aculeata has been featured in a now discontinued South African nickel 10 cent coin. The common names Ngopanie, Sekope, Red Hot Poker Aloe and White Thorn Aloe have been recorded. The specie name 'aculeata' refers to the tuberculate spines on the leaves. Aloe aculeata can be found in quite a few areas in the Northern Province and in the extreme northern parts of Mpumalanga and it also extends into Zimbabwe. Aloe aculeata is found in rocky areas in grassland and open bush veld. It forms a stemless Aloe with a single rosette up to 1 meter high and wide. The leaves of Aloe aculeata are long and quite broad at the base, 120mm wide, and are dull-green in colour. The leaves are curved inward which gives the rosette a rounded appearance. The leaf-margins are armed with reddish-brown triangular teeth. More about the Aloe genus below. Aloes are very popular and some of the most rewarding plants to cultivate.
