Kennedy History: John Fitzgerald Kennedy was born in Brookline, Massachusetts, on May 29, 1917. He enrolled at Harvard in 1940 and, during his senior year, wrote his thesis on Great Britain’s lack of readiness for war with Germany, which was later published as Why England Slept. Despite numerous health problems, Kennedy joined the U.S. Navy after graduation and went to the South Pacific, where he was injured when the patrol torpedo boat he commanded was rammed by an enemy warship. Despite his injuries, Kennedy guided the surviving crew members to safety and was awarded the Navy and Marine Corps Medal and a Purple Heart for his heroism. Following his military service, Kennedy worked as a reporter for a brief period before successfully running for the U.S. House of Representatives, where he served from 1947 to 1953, and then the U.S. Senate, serving there from 1953 to 1960. During his tenure in the Senate, while recuperating from back surgery, Kennedy wrote his Pulitzer Prize–winning book, Profiles in Courage. The Democratic Party nominated Kennedy as its candidate for president in 1960. He won the election by a small margin, becoming the youngest man elected president and the first Roman Catholic to hold the office. Kennedy was in office less than three years when he was struck down by an assassin’s bullet on November 22, 1963. Highlights of President Kennedy’s administration include the: Launch of the first American manned spaceflight, Freedom 7 Bay of Pigs invasion, an attempt to overthrow Cuban leader Fidel Castro Cuban Missile Crisis, the confrontation between the U.S. and Soviet Union over nuclear missiles in Cuba Signing of the Limited Nuclear Test Ban Treaty, an agreement between the U.S., Great Britain and Soviet Union to ban nuclear weapons testing in the atmosphere, space and underwater Establishment of the Peace Corps   SPECIFICATIONS Denomination:$1 Composition:6% Zinc, 3.5% Manganese  2% Nickel, Balance Copper Weight:8.100 grams Diameter:1.043 inches (26.49 mm) Edge:Lettered Mint and Mint Mark:Philadelphia – P Denver – D    weight: 10g Combine orders up to 2kg via courier     MORE ITEMS HERE PAYMENT within 3 days, please else items will be relisted and a SALE NOT COMPLETE will be filed If you're placing multiple orders to combine shipping please notify seller, beforehand to avoid a SNC

John Dovey did his National Service in the SADF in 1985-1986. He has served since then in three Citizen Force Regiments, and is still serving. This compilation of poems is his attempt to preserve some of the thoughts and feelings of the soldiers who were in the SADF during the "Border War" period. The poems in this compilation are mostly from that period. There are a few poems from Cubans and one from a British soldier, that fit into the theme of the compilation. Some are in English, some in Afrikaans and there is even one in Spanish. The poems are all heart-felt ones that reflect the mood and emotion of the times. There are a surprising number that deal with loneliness and fear, which two things any soldier will know are constant companions. This book is above all about the commonality of experience that all soldiers share, and about the human face of the individuals of which an "army" is comprised. Paperback, 59 pages. Published November 2006

Brown (R. A. - Editor). The Road To Ulundi: The Watercolour Drawings of John North Crealock. Pietermaritzburg: University of Natal Press, 1969. Limited edition of 1000 of which this is No. 100. The Watercolour Drawings of John North Crealock relating to The Zulu War of 1879. "Editor's note.'John North Crealock, soldier-artist, was Lord Chelmsford's military secretary during the operations in the Eastern Cape and during the Zulu War of 1879. Crealock rode with his artist's materials in his saddle-bag and he recorded, as occasion offered, landscapes, camp sights and scenes, battlefields and military and civil personalities. Ten of the drawings sent to London with all speed possible in the days when Isandhlwana and Rorke's Drift were stop-press stories, were reproduced in the Illustrated London News. Crealock's drawings are of pleasing artistic quality. Militarily, they date from an age when a substantial military force with "modern" firearms, fighting bravely to the last man, could still be overwhelmed by superior numbers fighting with equal bravery, but armed, for the most part, only with missile or stabbing assegais. But the drawings are not only of military interest, Their excellent detail has been praised by botanists, geographers and historians who recognise in them an authentic pictorial record of the Eastern Cape and Natal more than a hundred years ago. On his return to England after the Zulu War, Crealock preserved 189 of these drawings in an album which was left on his death, in the care of his regiment, the 95th Foot. The present album contains 67 of the drawings selected from those made in Natal and Zululand during the Zulu War." Unpaginated (8 pp text + 36 pp ills), frontis portrait of the artist, map, 66 colour and black + white drawings. 440x240mm Tall. Very Good. Dw edges are a bit tatty. Some light foxing present. Hardcover. (##3213)

The Rhodesian Bush War Diary of John Coey, KIA 19 July 1975 It is Saturday afternoon, 19 July 1975, next to a dry riverbed in Rhodesias north-eastern operational area, in a war against communist-backed guerrillas. A Rhodesian combat medic receives an order to descend into the riverbed to attend to two critically wounded troopers, their figures seemingly lifeless on the sand. The whereabouts of the insurgents is not known. As the medic, displaying a red cross, moves in, shots ring out and he sustains a fatal head wound. That medic is 24-year-old American John Alan Coey.  Driven by his Christian faith and an ardent belief in the threat of global communist hegemony, Coey had come to Rhodesia to fulfil an overriding passion to help the beleaguered southern African country in its fight against what he perceived to be a communist bid to secure the sub-continent. John was a very complex individual who, right until his death, was in a permanent state of internal conflict as to his mission in life: he wishes he had a wife; he tells young American girls that they must produce strong sons who will fight the good fight; he is disillusioned by his failures; he admits he is a weak leader, virtually offering an apology for his own shortcomings; he vacillates endlessly; he admits to being unable to identify the path he needs to take to achieve his mission.  But, finally, as a combat medica pioneer in this concepthe finds his much sought-after destiny. Paperback, 200 pages

A narrative of the ninth Frontier War by the assistant military secretary to Lieutenant General Thesiger (Graham's Town series) 1989. Hard cover with dust cover; 195 pages. Very good condition. Tightly bound and neat. Under 1kg Major John Crealock (1837-1895) fought in a number of colonial wars, including the Indian Mutiny and the Anglo-Zulu War. This volume is a detailed account of the warfare conducted against the Xhosa in the last phases of the frontier war of 1877-1878. Opinionated and inefficient, Crealock nevertheless gives a sober account of the military situation.

This item is sold brand new. It is ordered on demand from our supplier and is usually dispatched within 7 - 11 working days On capture, British officers and men were routinely told by the Germans 'For you the war is over'. Nothing could be further from the truth. British Prisoners of War merely exchanged one barbed-wire battleground for another. In the camps the war was eternal. There was the war against the German military, fought with everything from taunting humour to outright sabotage, with a literal spanner put in the works of the factories and salt mines prisoners were forced to slave in. British PoWs also fought a valiant war against the conditions in which they were mired. They battled starvation, disease, Prussian cruelties, boredom, and their own inner demons. And, of course, they escaped. Then escaped again. No less than 29 officers at Holzminden camp in burrowed their way out via a tunnel (dug with a chisel and trowel) in the Great Escape of the Great War. It was war with heart-breaking consequences: more than PoWs died, many of them murdered, to be buried in shallow unmarked graves. Using contemporary records - from prisoners' diaries to letters home to poetry - John Lewis-Stempel reveals the death, life and, above all, the glory of Britain's warriors behind the wire. For it was in the PoW camps, far from the blasted trenches, that the true spirit of the Tommy was exemplified. Features Summary The War Behind the Wire is the new book by the acclaimed author of Six Weeks which depicted the extraordinary story of British junior officers in the First World War in such harrowing detail...
