2011. Soft cover. 217 pages. Very good condition: tightly bound, neat and clean. As new. Under 1kg. A young doctor is forced to face the Border War when he can no longer escape the call-up. With only a few weeks’ training in this field, Anthony Feinstein is thrust into the army’s psychiatric unit. Battle Scarred is his revealing account of his experiences treating bossies soldiers and all manner of war -induced psychosis in a largely hostile environment. He starts out at 1 Military Hospital in Pretoria where his first patients are talking to the stars or claiming to be Jesus. Next, he is dispatched to Oshakati, home to the largest military base in the war zone, to screen troops for post-traumatic stress disorder. He steps into a world of alcoholism, insomnia, family violence and venereal disease. The consequences of war and the idiosyncrasies of army life present themselves in strange ailments. Chilling stories are told not only by the conscripts, but also by the wives of the permanent force soldiers who live on the base. During a stint at an outpost Feinstein experiences the soldiers’ shocking cruelty – and what it does to their psyche. This honest personal account sheds light on the widespread but seldom talked about fall-out from the Border War. It demands to be read, not only by the thousands of ex-soldiers still carrying the invisible scars, but by all South Africans.

This item is sold brand new. It is ordered on demand from our supplier and is usually dispatched within 7 - 11 working days On 30 January the North Vietnamese communists launched a coordinated surprise attack - the Tet Offensive - across South Vietnam against the South Vietnamese and American armies. Superior firepower eventually crushed the offensive, but it proved to be a major psychological victory for the communists - a turning point in the Vietnam War. Anthony Tucker-Jones, in this photographic history of Tet - and of American involvement in the struggle against the forces of the Viet Cong and the regular North Vietnamese army - uses over 180 contemporary images, colour and black and white, to show all sides of the conflict and to reassess a defining moment in the protracted and bitter campaign against communism in South-East Asia. The images record in vivid detail the conditions and the nature of the fighting, in particular the battles for Hue, Khe Sanh and Saigon, and the equipment and the weaponry that was used. They show the impact of the fighting on the civilian population in the countryside and cities as they became battlegrounds. And they illustrate why the US public was so shocked by the capability of the communists to launch such an all-encompassing assault that many lost faith in America's commitment to the South. Features Summary Photographic history of the Vietnam War. Features rare photographs selected from US military archives showing American and Vietnamese forces in action.   Anthony Blond, London, 1959. Hard Cover. Book Condition: Good. Dust Jacket Condition: poor, edge-chipped, loss at head and foot of spine and bottom corners. Second Impression. Dust jacket price clipped, some closed chips. Black cloth with gilt titling on spine. Map end papers. Photographs on plates. 255 pages clean and tight. Size: 8vo. The Siege of Tobruk lasted longer than the Siege of Mafeking. This fly-blown, dust-ridden Lybian port was the only harbour between Bengazi and Alexandria and became crucial as the only stumbling-block preventing Rommel's sweep forward to the Nile. The centre of a shuttlecock war Tobruk was captured by Wavell in 1940, became a beleaguered fortress for 242 days until its garrison was relieved in November 1941 by Auchinleck. Churchill and his War Cabinet in Whitehall with a fine sense of unreality ordered that " Tobruk must be held to the death." It was. The Australians under Major General Morshead fought like tigers, but a year later another garrison of 30,000 men in Tobruk commanded by Major General Klopper surrendered to Rommel in twenty-four hours. Why? There were rumours of high-ranking officers on Klopper's staff surrendering to Rommel blind drunk, of native African troops pillaging the rum stores and being shot out of hand by their captors, and of Company Commanders deserting their men... a Court of Enquiry was held in Cairo but its findings remain secret. Now, after seventeen years, Anthony Heckstall-Smith who was himself a Flotilla Officer of the "A" Lighters which victualled the garrison at fantastic cost in men and ships, has sifted evidence from officers of all units involved-Australian, South African, German and British-in order to write a controversial and thrilling story of men in battle.

SAS Savage Wars of Peace - Anthony Kemp - 1994 - Paperback in good, clean and tight condition.  This work, the sequel to Anthony Kemp's definitive "The SAS at War", which dealt with the foundation of the Regiment by David Stirling and its role up to 1945, takes the story forward to the storming of the Iranian Embassy, the attack on the IRA in Gibraltar, and the under-cover Gulf War. Following the Second World War, the SAS became essentially a component of the British Army and took part in colonial campaigns, including those in Malaya, Borneo, South Arabia and Oman. Since 1969, though, elements of the Regiment have been stationed more or less permanently in an under-cover role in Northern Ireland. It was at about that time too that the Regiment became involved in counter terrorist activities elsewhere, including England itself. Since then a cloak of secrecy has descended over all SAS activities, including those in the Falklands and the Gulf War. Intense speculation has been the inevitable result. This book, based on interviews and on more co-operation than the SAS has granted any other writer, tells us the maximum compatible with security of a regiment which has become the most feared and respected of special forces anywhere in the world.

Defence against total attack by Anthony Harrigan FIRST EDITION, POLITICAL     Anthony Harrigan argues that conflict is not a disease and that the character of man finds its manifestations in struggle. He says that the theory that non-conflict can only lead to the enslavement of mankind.  “Life without conflict would be a reduction of man’s existence tot the pre-human level, to life without quality”, he says. He looks at conflict in the Congo; conflict in the modern world; conflict and Nihilism; war and morality; psychological warfare, toxic warfare, and also has a chapter on South Africa: “strength through struggle” in which he warns against the aggressiveness and global ambitions of “emerging,” nations. He sites England and its “rising tide of immigration” and the spectre of it becoming a coloured country, as an example of what can happen to South Africa.   Nasionale Boekhandel, p. Subtitle: Desert Shield and Desert Storm, Author: Anthony A. Evans    Publisher: Greenhill Books () ISBN-10: ISBN-13: Condition: Very Good Binding: Softcover Pages: 72 Dimensions: 25.8 x 19 x 0.5 cm +++ by Anthony A. Evan +++ A decade ago, the United States armed forces launched its largest offensive operation since the D-Day landings in World War II. The nature of the war was vastly changed; here was a purely desert environment, with sweltering heat during the day and bitter cold at night, making new demands on men and equipment. Many weapons and items of equipment were seeing combat for the first time together with new and sophisticated electronics gear. In this book, G.I.s from all the branches of the US armed forces are illustrated together with the many specialist units that have grown in importance over the last few decades.   A passion for books and a passion for collecting fine editions was the recipe that created the successful group of bookshops in Johannesburg called Bookdealers. The group started thirty years ago with one store in the quirky suburb of Yeoville and has grown through the years to a total of five shops, plus our online sales. Bookdealers is well-known for its collectable and used books. We also have a large variety of remaindered books sourced from around the world.  If you collect from one of our five branches there is no delivery charge. We also offer postal delivery (when available) and courier delivery, subject to a quote.

Free Postage Within SA for Orders Over R900! Hardcover. . Chatto & Windus / Random House. 262 pages. Very good condition (some shelf wear and other general signs of use). An exploration of the challenged state of masculinity in our post-feminist society of gender equality. As we reach the millennium, there is hardly anything to be done that cannot be done by women - where does this leave men? Have men been pushed out of parenting - even of procreation? The brute strength of the male is no longer necessary to mine coal or build ships - or even make war. Men don't have to "provide" for their families, as more women harness their intelligence and generate their own incomes. Is it surprising that male suicides outnumber female by a factor of 3 or 4 to 1, or that the predilection of males to be violent - once seen as a source of pride - now seems to threaten our very culture and civilisation? Is what Clare calls the "phallic man" - assertive, authoritative, dominant, in control not only of himself but of women - dying out? As a practising psychiatrist, Anthony Clare brings a knowledge of science and medicine plus a deep understanding of the human heart and mind to this lively, readable, fair-handed and above all sympathetic examination of the male in today's society. Additional photos on request. Please ask any questions before placing your order. Psychology / Self-Help Many more books on sale, click here to browse!

The battle for Stalingrad became the focus of Hitler and Stalin's determination to win the gruesome, vicious war on the eastern front. The citizens of Stalingrad endured unimaginable hardship; the battle, with fierce hand-to-hand fighting in each room of each building, was brutally destructive to both armies. But the eventual victory of the Red Army, and the failure of Hitler's Operation Barbarossa, was the first defeat of Hitler's territorial ambitions in Europe, and the start of his decline. Softcover. The Anglo-Zulu war of 1879 was perhaps subjected to much controversy as a result of the epic Zulu victory at the battle of Isandlwana.  Lord Chelmsford, the General Officer commanding the invasion force during the war, sustained severe criticism from both journalists and parliament following his actions and conduct at Isandlwana. In 1939 and on the sixtieth anniversary of the battle, Major, the Hon Gerald French, wrote a controversial but riveting book titled 'Lord Chelmsford and the Zulu War, which is based on defending both Lord Chelmsford's actions and reputation.  The foreword to the book was written by General Sir Bindon Blood who served under Chelmsford in India and a devoted admirer. French however, had fallen into the error of selective inaccurate source material and false reports that were, at the time, specifically designed to shield Lord Chelmsford from the Isandlwana debacle and conveniently lay such blame on the shoulders of Colonel Anthony Durnford, Royal Engineers, who was present at Isandlwana.  For example, in looking for such evidence, French deliberately altered a map that showed the true disposition of the imperial defense line at the battle in order for readers to reach the conclusion that the primary course of the defeat was the retreat of the Natal Native Contingent, that opened a gap in the defense, thus allowing an unopposed Zulu advance.
