Cape Town (Western Cape)
Laurie Davison doesn't dare to peek into the future. Alone and afraid; facing a life-threatening illness; her present is a nightmare and her past a shattered dream. A married lover; a New Age mother; a host of modern hang-ups; and now 'the big one'. No wonder she doesn't believe in angels. But as Laurie discovers; the present is not the whole story. Packed off to Crompton Hall; a mysterious clinic in the heart of Norfolk; she is quickly drawn into another reality; the world of Edwardian England and the tangled affairs of the beautiful India Crompton-Leigh; whose portrait hangs in the library at the Hall. Why is India haunting Laurie; and what is the story she has to tell? Who is the second figure in the picture beside her? Only by unravelling the story and facing her own darkness can Laurie embrace life and begin to believe in the future again.

1963. First edition. Hard cover with dust cover; 312 pages.  Very good condition. Rust spots in front and back and on a few pages inside. The dust cover has wear and tear. Name inscriptions. Tightly bound and clean inside.  Under 1kg. Buller's Campaign is a powerful and invaluable reassessment of the life of General Buller and of the part he played in British military history. Beginning with his struggle for the position of Commander-in-Chief of the Army in 1895, it goes on to portray his role in the Boer War, and on its path, reveals many of the Victorian Imperialist attitudes of the day. A man of numerous failures, General Buller has been treated unkindly by history but Symons here seeks to paint a more rounded picture.
