Eastern Cape Veld Flowers by Eily Gledhill 1981, 2nd edition, Published by the Department of Nature and Environmental Conservation of the Cape Provincial Administration, Cape Town Preface to the first edition and preface to the second edition by Eily Gledhill, 276 pages, 4 color plates. Owner's signature inside and his stamp on the title page. Pages clean, nice tight binding. ~ Highly collectable book. Eily Gledhill (1914-2007) described a number of new species and worked on a revision of the genus Albuca. She also published ‘The genus Dioscorea in the Cape Province west of East London' in 1967. Many of her numerous publications were illustrated by herself with accurate black- and-white drawings. Furthermore, her book published in 1969 and with a second edition in 1981, The Eastern Cape veld flowers, in which she describes 554 species from 125 families, each illustrated by her fine line drawings, is still of great value to students of botany and the public at large  In the preface she writes: ‘If this guide assists owners of land and visitors to know more about the plants of the eastern Cape, it will have achieved its object, for any one who becomes interested in this unique flora cannot fail to realise why it needs to be protected’. She coined the term bonte veld which has become recognized as a veld type and is widely used. Eily was honoured in 1992 by Queen Elizabeth II, the sovereign head of the order, by her promotion to Dame of the Most Venerable Order of the Hospital of St John of Jerusalem. Eily was a member of the British Ecological Society, the Royal Society of South Africa, the Botanical Society of South Africa, the Van Riebeeck Society and the South African Ornithological Society.   Please judge from pictures:       Please note: Payment must be made within three days of auction close.    Please have a look at all my Items here!!

(This title is available on demand: expected date of dispatch will be 4-7 working days once ordered) Theodore Blanchaille is searching for the missing millions of the Boer leader Paul Kruger, and his lost city of gold. As a child he had heard tales of Kruger from a wayward priest; what follows is an astonishing journey that takes Blanchaille through a landscape peopled with spies, visionaries, terrorists, traitors, patriots and exiled presidents. From huge transit camps on the veld to a notorious prison block, from a township in the bloody aftermath of 'pacification' to a secret travellers' rest for fleeing pilgrims, and from the streets and cellars of Soho to paradise at last on a Swiss mountainside, Kruger's Alp is a fantastical political satire of extraordinary invention. (This title is available on demand: expected date of dispatch will be 4-7 working days once ordered) Dawid Kruiper was an old Bushman with a secret that had been kept in his family for over a century, and which he wanted to hand on to his sons before he died. But he didn't have the means to take his children back to the place where his grandfather had witnessed the horror that silenced him. So Dawid asked Patricia Glyn to help him mount the great - and final - odyssey of his life. For two months in 2011, three generations of the Kruiper family, Patricia and her expedition crew travelled through the Kalahari, visiting and documenting places where Dawid and his forebears had roamed when they were 'wild' and free in the decades before the outsiders arrived in their homeland. And their journey culminated in Dawid releasing his secret to the world. This is the story of how Patricia's assumptions about and relationships with the Kruiper family were tested to the limit before they trusted her with their knowledge and stories. Patricia slowly gains an understanding of the depth of the Kruipers' pain after centuries of genocide, prejudice and dispossession. The result is a candid but compassionate account of how this historical trauma manifests in the everyday lives of a contemporary Bushman family. Patricia describes what she learned from the family about humankind's original relationship with wilderness and the natural world. She recounts the Kruipers' extraordinary veld knowledge and intuition, their inbuilt GPS and prescience. This is an eco-adventure with a difference. What Dawid Knew explores the personal history and heritage of a remarkable family and what the Bushmen have to teach us about respect for, and responsible management of, our natural resources. When the South African Police Service receive a panicked call for help from the wayward daughter of a former Apartheid-era politician, they discover only her body but, within it, a message which will take Colonel Vaughn de Vries and Don February of the Special Crimes Unit on a journey through their country - and their country's past - to decipher and resolve. As organised crime grips South Africa, new players arrive in Cape Town, determined to exploit the poor and hopeless, promising redemption. While other government agencies snap impotently at the small fish, De Vries, linked by a personal connection, resolves to follow this trail to its source and take it down from the top. As decades old webs of corruption and influence are exposed, and the boundaries of morality blur, his decisions begin to impact on his friends, colleagues and family. Shortlisted for the Crime Writer's Association Gold Dagger 2014 (Crime Novel of the Year) Praise for Paul Mendelson: 'An excellent, uncompromising crime thriller made even better by its setting... the story is two journeys in one, and I'm glad I took both' Lee Child 'Mendelson is fast becoming a worthy rival to Deon Meyer... raw and atmospheric' The Times 'Mendelson plots so smoothly and writes so powerfully' The Guardian 'A jaw-droppingly brilliant crime thriller. Imagine The Killing moved to Cape Town and into the landscape of the hot and dusty African veld' Philip Glenister 'The First Rule of Survival is an incredibly atmospheric, complex and dazzling debut from a thrilling and authentic new voice in crime fiction' Brian McGilloway
