It is ordered on demand from our supplier and is usually dispatched within 7 - 15 working days In these two moving early plays, David Mamet displays the humor, sensitivity, and ear for language that have made him one of the most celebrated playwrights in American theater today. Reunion depicts the awkward, tender meeting between a father and a daughter drawn together by their loneliness after twenty years of separation. Their cautious small talk, filled with evasion and cliche, gradually exposes the terrifying isolation in which they live, and ultimately, their great need for each other. In the short vignette Dark Pony, a father tells a favorite bedtime story to comfort his young daughter as they drive home late at night. A foray into the realm of legend, the story of a young Indian brave and his trusty horse, Dark Pony has been called "a lovely, tiny moment of a play" by Julius Novick of The Village Voice. Minnesota Archive Editions uses digital technology to make long-unavailable books once again accessible, and are published unaltered from the original University of Minnesota Press editions. This is the second volume of a collection of plays by writers who have participated in an experimental program at the University of Minnesota under the auspices of the Office for Advanced Drama Research, of which Arthur H. Ballet is the director. Three young playwrights, Maria Irene Fornes, Nick Bortez, and Lee H. Kalcheim, are represented in the collection with two one-act plays and two three-act plays. Under the program, which is described by Dr. Ballet in his introduction, promising young playwrights are given assistance in developing their talents. Among other opportunities, they are offered the chance to have their plays actually produced. The plays in this volume are "Tango Palace " and "The Successful Life of Three: A Skit for Vaudeville," two one-act plays by Maria Irene Fornes; "Shelter Area," a three-act play by Nick Boretz; and "The Boy Who Came to Leave," a three-act play by Lee H. Kalcheim. In addition to the scripts, each playwright provides a discussion of his work in a preface. Production data for each play are given also. Both of the plays by Miss Fornes were produced at the Firehouse Theatre in Minneapolis, and "Tango Palace " also was given at the Actor's Workshop in San Francisco. "Shelter Area "was presented in the Playwrights' Premiere Season at the University of Minnesota. Mr. Kalcheim's play was given at the Theatre in the Round, Minneapolis. The plays in this volume and in Volume 1 of the collection range widely in theme and subject matter but they share a common trait - each represents a new and exciting voice in the American theatre. It is ordered on demand from our supplier and is usually dispatched within 7 - 15 working days TCG is proud to conclude the centennial year of Thornton Wilder's birth with the publication of Volume Two of his collected short plays. Thornton Wilder -- winner of three Pulitzer Prizes (one for fiction; two for drama) -- was not only one of America's greatest men-of-letters, but one of the most popular and most enjoyed. In addition to such highly regarded and popular novels as The Bridge of San Luis Rey and The Ides of March, he was one of our most successful playwrights. To this day, Our Town, The Matchmaker, and The Skin of Our Teeth remain among the best-loved and most-produced plays in the canon. To many contemporary playwrights, Wilder is -- together with Gertrude Stein, whom he championed -- the font of experimental drama in America. The diversity of form in his best-known works proves his mastery. Though his full-length works were few, he is widely perceived as one of this century's major American dramatists. A riveting novel that begins with a murder in an old Connecticut barn and reaches its climax on Broadway. We first meet Katie Byrne at seventeen. A tall beauty with reddish-gold hair, she has always wanted to be an actress. Her two best friends share her passion for the theatre, and the three girls have spent much of their childhood rehearsing plays in an old barn in Connecticut. Leaving early one day to help her mother prepare dinner, Katie realizes she has left her schoolbooks at the barn and she and her older brother return to retrieve them. When they arrive, they find the barn, the setting of so many happy dreams, has become the scene of a nightmare: one of Katie's friends has been raped and murdered, and the other lies unconscious. Ten years later, Katie, a struggling actress in New York, is still haunted by the tragedy. Her friend Carly remains in a coma, and Katie desperately wants to achieve success and stardom not only for herself but also for her two old friends. Her big chance comes when she is discovered and wins a major role in a Broadway play. A promising love affair adds to the excitement of working on Broadway; but Katie must face the demons of the past before she can embrace the possibilities of the future.

Subtitle: On Recent South African Writing Author: M.J. Daymond, J.U. Jacobs and Margaret Lenta Publisher: University Of KwaZulu-Natal Press (1984) ISBN-10: 0869803778 ISBN-13: 9780869803776 Condition: Very Good. Light wear to cover corners. Else an excellent copy. Binding: Softcover Pages: 325 Dimensions: 21.9 x 14.8 x 1.8 cm +++ by MJ Daymond, JU Jacobs and Margaret Lenta +++ Momentum sees writing in South Africa after Soweto '76 as being of two kinds: the artefact novels, plays or poetry; and the manifesto the artist's statement about the shaping power of events in this country on his or her work. Another kind of division is also operative in South African literature: the writings of those who live here and the writings of those who live abroad - our exiles.  Because there are at least these two kinds of divisions in our literature, Momentum takes the shape it does. It combines writers' statements (from home and abroad) about their work with critical discussion of that work. This combination is unique in South African publishing and its effect is to allow the reader to come to an independent understanding of the interactions between forces which shape our writing, the writing itself, and critical response to that writing.

Penguin Modern Poets 7: God Is Distant gathers a selection spanning Hill's full body of poetry, from the astonishing power and compression of the first five decades to the greater experimentalism and fluency of the creative outpouring that began in 1997, and places it alongside work by two younger British poets: Rowan Evans, whose 'tirelessly inventive' and 'vivid lyrical work' (Denise Riley, Eric Gregory Award citation) plays with the legacy of late modernism to create poetry of great beauty, energy and precision; and Toby Martinez de las Rivas, whose first two collections have seen his 'visionary disposition' (Guardian) build to rhetorical heights of Blakean dimensions. Taken together, these are poems of lucid intensity, high seriousness and knowing sidelong glances, as alert to the natural world of the British countryside as they are to the body that suffers and to questions of the soul. They take a long view of humanity's riches and crises, and consider such issues as morality, faith, innocence, redemption, the public spaces of democracy and the acts of violence that rupture them. A set of 20 encyclopedia's. At the back of each volume seems to be a section with creative practical exercises - like plays and making a catamaran to mention just two. As I look at these books I wonder what value to place on them. They seem to represent more than just the info inside them - but a very real way of researching info that leads to feelings of accomplishment, a way that is unfortunately becoming lost in our computerised age.

One of the most influential of Shakespeare’s plays, this early comedy has inspired numerous adaptations from opera to television. Audiences and critics have wrangled over the ending – is it happy? was Shakespeare being ironic? – not only in modern times but ever since the play was first performed. As the elder of two sisters, Katharina, sharp-tongued and even violent, must be married before sweet-natured Bianca. Despite the large dowry her father offers, none of Padua’s young men will risk marriage with a ‘shrew’. Petruchio, however, is impressed by Katharina’s spirit and confident of his own ability to manage her temper. This comedy of relations between the sexes remains a highly entertaining exploration of the struggle for supremacy within every couple. 1960 Green Folio Society clean white pages good condition, Hardback covers has a white scuff mark on the back.

Criminal's son Sean Tallow only has two over-riding desires in life. One is to step into the shoes of his glamorous friend Daniel Pagett and the other is to establish the truth about the School of Night, the shadowy group of Elizabethans who clustered around Sir Walter Raleigh. During his years working for the BBC he pursues the School of Night and its entanglement in the question of whether the man from Stratford-on-Avon could really have written the plays ascribed to William Shakespeare. If he didn't, then who did? The harder he studies, the less light is thrown on this troublesome question. In fact he begins to realise that he is no longer merely studying the School of Night; he has enrolled in it as a member. But there is more to come when his final, nocturnal partnership with his old friend Dan Pagett at last permits him to achieve both of his original ambitions, though in a manner he could never have imagined. Day becomes night as everything he once believed is turned on its head, and he enters a fearful world where there are no longer any rules except survival. Like the original members of the School of Night, he finds himself on the wrong side of the law.
