A South African Second World War Group of Six (x6) Medals to T. Brighton with Ribbon Bars. He served with the 8th Army in North Africa and then in Italy. All medals impressed: "4529 T. BRIGHTON". 1939-45 Star Africa Star Italy Star Defence Medal War Medal 1939045 Africa Service Medal Ribbons bars have the 8th Army Clasp and numeral attached. Note: I am listing a First World War South African Medal Trio to his father.

The original owner of this item was in the Rhodesian Army and in the BSAP Police Reserve (Blue Group Stick Leader). He made this display himself. The plastic covering is just a normal plastic covering. All items seem to be glued on the WWII Burma Star material colours background etc., for his service in WWII on the HMS Test. The plastic covering might show defects which are not actually on the items themselves. The back plaque cloth is that of the Southern Rhodesia Staff Corps. PATCHES: RHODESIA               : Never stitched, but glued. RHODESIAN ARMY  : Never stitched, but glued. BSAP RESERVE      : Never stitched, but glued. POLICE RESERVE   : Used, but good condition. No. 4.: Set: The first 3 all fine from top view, the last 3 where corners somewhat point together, has glue on top of those corners. RHODESIAN ARMY PATCH: You need to ignore the plastic covering, so hence the actual Rhodesian Army patch itself, basically ONLY has the following main faults on it top end: 1. Directly above the lion's left ear (Closest to his tail) is one white spot (On the red cotton border), the one to the view-able right of that, is a reflection only etc. 2. Directly below the pick handle bottom side, on the red cotton border, is one white spot. 3. On the RHS edge of the vertical red cotton border, as indicated by the white indicators, the green patch material comes through the red stitching a bit in 3 places, mainly on the thin edge side, not the top so much. That's about it.... Since this is an original person's plaque, I don't care to open it or interfere with it as such. Feel free to ask questions. Thanks....

        VINTAGE LIFE SAVING GUARDS BADGE The girl guard program has its roots in Scouting. While stationed in India, British Army officer Robert Baden-Powell realized his men lacked the ability to perform first aid procedures and the basic skills for survival in the wild. In turn, he wrote a small handbook to teach army men first aid, outdoor survival tactics and leadership. The book caught the attention of young English boys, so Robert began to explore the possibility of developing a training program geared toward this age group. This was the foundation for the birth of the Boy Scouts. In 1913 Robert Baden-Powell invited General William Booth to become a member of the governing body of world scouting. The general saw great potential in the program for The Salvation Army and out of it inaugurated the Life Saving Scout Movement. This step marked the beginning of a multi-faceted troop program for boys and girls in The Salvation Army. The first girl guard troop sprouted in London, England, in 1915 and was called the Life-Saving Girl Guards. It reflected the structure and tenor of the Life Saving Scouts program. Much of the training was similar, but other focuses such as homemaking skills were included. The original Life-Saving Girl Guard badge featured a lamp, representing guarding the soul; an eye, representing guarding the mind; crossed clubs, representing guarding the body; Bible representing the importance of God in their lives; and a patrol of girls, representing guarding others. The motto was “To save and to serve.” After the first girl guard troop was inaugurated in the United States by National Commander Evangeline Booth in 1916, the program spread across the nation.   It is interesting to note that the American badge never had the bottom section with "To save and to serve" on it. That was purely UK and Europe.

With his parting words "I shall return," General Douglas MacArthur sealed the fate of the last American forces on Bataan. Yet one young Army Captain, named Russell Volckmann, refused to surrender. He disappeared into the jungles of north Luzon where he raised a Filipino army of over 22,000 men. For the next three years he led a guerrilla war against the Japanese, killing over 50,000 enemy soldiers. At the same time he established radio contact with MacArthur's HQ in Australia and directed Allied forces to key enemy positions. When General Yamashita finally surrendered, he made his initial overtures not to MacArthur, but to Volckmann. This book establishes how Volckmann's leadership was critical to the outcome of the war in the Philippines. His ability to synthesize the realities and potential of guerrilla warfare led to a campaign that rendered Yamashita's forces incapable of repelling the Allied invasion. Had it not been for Volckmann, the Americans would have gone in "blind" during their counter-invasion, reducing their efforts to a trial-and-error campaign that would undoubtedly have cost more lives, materiel, and potentially stalled the pace of the entire Pacific War. Second, this book establishes Volckmann as the progenitor of modern counterinsurgency doctrine and the true "Father" of Army Special Forces—a title that history has erroneously awarded to Colonel Aaron Bank of the ETO. In 1950, Volckmann wrote two Army field manuals: Operations Against Guerrilla Forces and Organization and Conduct of Guerrilla Warfare, though today few realize he was their author. Together, they became the Army's first handbooks outlining the precepts for both special warfare and counter-guerrilla operations. Taking his argument directly to the Army Chief of Staff, Volckmann outlined the concept for Army Special Forces. At a time when U.S. military doctrine was conventional in outlook, he marketed the ideas of guerrilla warfare as a critical force multiplier for any future conflict, ultimately securing the establishment of the Army's first special operations unit—the 10th Special Forces Group.
