Like many newly-qualified doctors, Richard Gordon is determined to be a great surgeon, and starts off in the lowly post of Junior Assistant to the Casualty Officer at St Swithins.  Unfortunately, a number of faux pas lose him promotion in favour of his spotty and sycophantic colleague Dr Bingham.  Gordon then gets into the hands of a medical employment agency and finds himself in practice in the Midlands.  'Don't worry about the doctor you're going to work with,' his friend Grimsdyke advises beforehand.  'Find out what his wife is like - they're the trouble.'  Doctor Gordon is to make use of this advice within twelve hours of arrival.  After an interlude in the fashionable practice of an amorous London doctor, Gordon again finds himself admitted as Resident House Surgeon at St Swithin's.  There his rivalry with Bingham starts again, but this time it's over a more serious matter than science or surgery - the hand of the prettiest night nurse in the hospital is at stake. Hard cover, fairly good condition.  The dust cover is a bit scuffed and the paper discolored.  208 pages, all intact.

From the searing heat of the Zambezi Valley to the freezing cold of the Chimanimani Mountains in Rhodesia, from the bars in Port St Johns in the Transkei to the Drakensberg Mountains in South Africa, this is the story of one man's fight against terror, and his conscience. Anyone living in Rhodesia during the 1960s and 1970s would have had a father, husband, brother or son called up in the defense of the war-torn, landlocked little country. A few of these brave men would have been members of the elite and secretive unit that struck terror into the hearts of the ZANLA and ZIPRA guerrillas infiltrating the country at that time - the Selous Scouts. These men were highly trained and disciplined, with skills to rival the SAS, Navy Seals and the US Marines, although their dress and appearance were wildly unconventional: civilian clothing with blackened, hairy faces to resemble the very people they were fighting against. Twice decorated - with the Member of the Legion of Merit (MLM) and the Military Forces' Commendation (MFC) - Andrew Balaam was a member of the Rhodesian Light Infantry and later the Selous Scouts, for a period spanning twelve years. This is his honest and insightful account of his time as a pseudo operator. His story is brutally truthful, frightening, sometimes humorous and often sad. In later years, after Rhodesia became Zimbabwe, he was involved with a number of other former Selous Scouts in the attempted coups in the Ciskei, a South African homeland, and Lesotho, an independent nation, whose only crimes were supporting the African National Congress. Training terrorists, or as they preferred to be called, 'liberation armies', to conduct a war of terror on innocent civilians, was the very thing he had spent the last ten years in Rhodesia fighting against. This is the true, untold story of these failed attempts at governmental overthrows This book is imported on demand and dispatched within 15 working days depending on supplier Specifications Author: Andrew Balaam Binding: Paperback EAN: 9781909982772 ISBN: 1909982776 Label: Helion and Company Manufacturer: Helion and Company Number Of Pages: 288 PublicationDate: 2014-11-19 Publisher: Helion and Company Studio: Helion and Company

Author: Karin Altenberg Publisher: Quercus Books () ISBN-10: ISBN-13: Condition: Very Good. Some wear to cover edges. Binding: Softcover Pages: 312 Dimensions: 23.1 x 15.1 x 2.2 cm +++ by Karin Altenberg +++ Longlisted for the Orange Prize . On the ten-hour sailing west from the Hebrides to the islands of St Kilda, everything lies ahead for Lizzie and Neil MacKenzie. Neil is to become the minister to the small community of islanders and Lizzie, his new wife, is pregnant with their first child. Neil's journey is evangelical: a testing and strengthening of his own faith against the old pagan ways of the St Kildans, but it is also a passage to atonement. For Lizzie - bright, beautiful and devoted - this is an adventure, a voyage into the unknown. She is sure only of her loyalty and love for her husband, but everything that happens from now on will challenge all her certainties. As the two adjust to life on an exposed archipelago on the edge of civilization, where the natives live in squalor and subsist on a diet of seabirds, and babies perish mysteriously in their first week, their marriage - and their sanity - is threatened. Is Lizzie a willful temptress drawing him away from his faith? Is Neil's zealous Christianity unhinging into madness? And who, or what, is haunting the moors and cliff-tops? Exquisitely written and profoundly moving, Island of Wings is more than just an account of a marriage in peril - it is also a richly imagined novel about two people struggling to keep their love, and their family, alive in a place of terrible hardship and tumultuous beauty.   A passion for books and a passion for collecting fine editions was the recipe that created the successful group of bookshops in Johannesburg called Bookdealers.
