Christopher Hope's poems were first published in Whitewashes (1971), but his first significant publication was Cape Drives (1974), which won the Thomas Pringle Prize and a Cholmondeley Award. His published poetry also includes In the Country of the Black Pig (1981) and Englishmen (1985). His first novel, A Separate Development (1981), was banned in South Africa. A rich, comic satire of the apartheid system, it won the David Higham Prize for Fiction. His other novels include Kruger's Alp (1984), which won the Whitbread Novel Award; The Hottentot Room (1986), set in a London drinking club, a home from home for South African exiles; and My Chocolate Redeemer (1989), the story of an unlikely friendship between a 15-year-old girl and an exiled dictator. More recent novels include Serenity House (1992), a black comedy set in an old people's home in London, shortlisted for the Booker Prize and Darkest England (1996). Hard Cover. The very first page (blank) has some browning due to ade but the rest of the pages have no foxing., The hardcover  (I do not beleive this book was published with a dust jacket) does have a little shelf wear mainly on the spine in the front - please see the photographs " pasted " below. In 1799 four missionaries—two English and two Dutch—arrived at the Cape, having been sent out by the London Missionary Society. Although mission work by the Moravians had begun some time before, this meant the commencement of large-scale mission work in South Africa, and initiated what might be called the ‘golden age’ of missionary activity in South Africa. The early mission, 1799–1819 consists of 17 essays, some of them in Afrikaans, in which the noted writer and historian Karel Schoeman describes the life and work of a number of missionaries, mission assistants and artisans, ‘native agents’, catechists and lay helpers, including three women, who where involved in the establishment of the mission during the pioneer period. His subjects are mainly Dutch and indigenous mission workers in the service of the LMS and their work among the slave population of the Cape Colony and the inhabitants of the Orange River area beyond the northern frontier of the Colony.

  Published in   New York, by H.R. Harmer Limited, 1950,  First Edition. Very good indeed, near fine, with light foxing on edges and endpapers. Else clean and tight with bright gilt decoration of a triangular stamp on front board and gilt titles on spine. Illustrated dust jacket is price clipped but otherwise complete.Supplement loosely inserted.
