The Yellow Bird of Paradise - Strelitzia reginae 'Mandela's Gold' - is a rare, yellow form of the famous orange Bird of Paradise. This spectacular cultivar has flaring, yellow sepals and blue petals reminiscent of a crested tropical bird. Like the orange form, it is easy to grow in the right conditions. Related to Heliconias and Bananas, the Yellow Bird of Paradise looks similar to the orange form, but it slightly smaller, growing to 4 feet tall.  This South African native eventually multiplies into a large colony of plants several feet across.  It blooms throughout the year in mild climates.  The tall flower stalks rise above the foliage, with a beak-like spathe growing outward, about 6 inches in length.  The bright yellow sepals spread out to invite birds to perch on the blue petals, which contain nectar.  The blooms make very long lasting cut flowers.  'Mandela's Gold' was named in honor of South African statesman, Nelson Mandela. 10 SEEDS PER PACK GROWING INSTRUCTIONS INCLUDED

Lepismium is a small genus of a dozen species from tropical South America. They need a light, well-drained soil. They like shade and some humidity, but in general, will take temperature close to freezing for short periods. They are propagated by cuttings or seed and do great in pots, rockeries and hanging baskets. Lepismium species are either Epiphytic or Lithophytic -meaning tree-dwellers or rock dwellers. They typically grow as hanging masses of many-branched stems that branch off from the middle of the stems.             The stems vary from flat, to angled, to rounded in cross-section. Flowers arise along the sides of the stems and often line the entire length of the stem on both sides. The flowers themselves are relatively small, though generally larger than those in the similar genus Rhipsalis. Several Lepismium species feature colored flowers and other have white flowers, either of these turning into bright colored fruits later on. These species largely occur in Bolivia, but are also found in adjacent Brazil and Argentina. Some species are quite common in cultivation while others are virtually unknown to growers. Like other epi-cacti, this species requires wetter, more tropical conditions than their desert counterparts. Lepismium ianthothele is a relatively rare cactus with erect to drooping branches that grow from 30cm to 60cm long. They start off erect and as they age they start drooping under their own weight. Synonyms include Cereus ianthothele, Pfeiffera ianthothele, Rhipsalis ianothothele, Rhipsalis cereiformis, Pfeiffera erecta, Lepismium erectum, Pfeiffera mataralensis, Lepismium mataralense, Pfeiffera multigona and Pfeiffera gracilis.

ROYAL POINCIANA   Delonix Regia   You are bidding on 5 seeds         A deciduous tropical tree with fern-like leaves and flamboyant display of flowers, that is considered one of the most beautiful trees in the world.  Although it is a fast grower, it can take up to 10 years to mature.   This tree requires a tropical or near tropical climate but can tolerate drought and salty conditions.  It prefers an open, free-draining sandy or loamy soil enriched with organic matter.  The tree does not like heavy or clay soils and flowers more profusely when kept slightly dry.   In addition to its ornamental value, it is also a useful shade tree because it grows to a modest height (mostly 5m but it can reach a maximum height of 12m) but spreads widely and it’s dense foliage provides perfect shade.  In areas with a marked dry season, it sheds its leaves during the drought but in other areas, it is virtually evergreen.   Sowing:  soak in warm water for at least 24 hours then plant in warm, moist soil in a semi-shaded, sheltered position.  The seeds grow rapidly and can reach 30cm in a few weeks under ideal conditions   Locality:  Ex Hort.  Date of harvest:  August 2016          FASTWAY COURIER COVERAGE MAP

The genus Bulbine is placed in the Asphodelaceae family and comprises more or less 73 species occurring in Africa and Australia. In southern Africa you will find 67 species, of which 62 are indigenous to South Africa, whereas only six species are found in Australia. Of the southern African species only five extend into tropical Africa. The genus is consequently considered to be a southern African entity. The genus is characterized by water-wise succulent plants with lax or compound racemes (flowers borne on stalks along an unbranched axis, lower ones opening first) of mostly yellow (very rarely white, orange or pink) flowers with bearded stamens. It is closely related to Bulbinella but has flowers that are "bearded" with hairy stamens. Many Bulbine species have medicinal uses too. Bulbine narcissifolia commonly known as Strap-leafed Bulbine or Snake Flower is used medicinally by the Basotho and Griqua for wound healing and as a mild purgative. Bulbine narcissifolia is ideal to use as an accent plant in a small bed or as a mass display in a large bed. Plants are rather fast growing and drought resistant, making it ideal for water-wise gardening. In its natural habitat it mostly flowers during spring (February to April) and summer (September to November), but can have an extended flowering period in cultivation. It puts of a gorgeous display of brilliant yellow flowers without requiring a lot of attention. The contrasting white bracts and bright yellow flowers on the compact inflorescences form an interesting display. Bulbine narcissifolia is used medicinally by the Basotho and Griqua for wound healing and as a mild purgative. As with many other Bulbine species, the roots can also be taken to counteract vomiting, diarrhoea and urinary infections. It is also commonly used to treat diabetes, rheumatism and blood problems. Sow the seeds of Bulbine narcissifolia during spring.

Passiflora, known also as the passion flowers or passion vines, is a genus of about 500 species of flowering plants, the namesakes of the family Passifloraceae. They are mostly vines, with some being shrubs, and a few species being herbaceous. A number of species of Passiflora are cultivated outside their natural range for their beautiful flowers and delicious edible fruit. Hundreds of hybrids have been named; hybridizing is currently being done extensively for flowers, foliage and fruit. Most species have round or elongated edible fruit from 5cm to 20cm long and 2.5cm to 5cm across, depending upon the species or cultivar.         Passiflora will adjust to any kind of soil, except desert conditions or very alkaline soil. Prefers full sun but will do with a light place or even half-shade. Passiflora need abundant watering during the growing season. In winter watering can significantly be reduced but good soil moisture must be maintained. Passiflora capsularis commonly known as Red Granadilla, bears vanilla scented delicate white flowers around 5cm in diameter. It produces unusual looking ribbed ellipsoid fruits reddish purple in color, which are not edible. It grows readily in tropical climates, tolerating down to 5°C and even lower for short spells. It flowers and grows readily even in small pots.

Gerbera is a genus of approximately 30 species from the sunflower family, Asteraceae. It was named in honour of the German botanist and naturalist Traugott Gerber. They are found in South America, Africa and tropical Asia. Gerbera species bear a large capitulum with striking, two-lipped ray florets in yellow, orange, white, pink or red colours. The capitulum, which has the appearance of a single flower, is actually composed of hundreds of individual flowers. The morphology of the flowers varies depending on their position in the capitulum. Gerbera is very popular and widely used as a decorative garden plant or as cut flowers. Gerbera contains naturally occurring coumarin derivatives. They are attractive to bees, butterflies and birds. Their soil should be kept moist but not soaked.           Gerbera jamesonii is a South African indigenous species from the Barberton area in the Northern Province is a deservedly popular garden plant throughout the world and is one of the parents of the many showy Gerbera hybrids seen in florist shops. It is a perennial herb with deeply lobed leaves covered with silky hairs arising from a crown. The striking inflorescence is borne on a long stalk and the outermost petals (ray florets) may be cream, red, orange or pink, while the central flowers (disc florets) are cream. Flowering occurs in spring and autumn. Gerbera jamesonii is found naturally in grassland in sandy, well-drained soils in Mpumalanga. A favourite of many people; they are bright, colourful, pretty flowers that make both the garden and any floral arrangement appear vibrant and alive. Growing your own at home is easy provided that you have suitable garden space. You can even grow some in a windowsill pot if wished.

Satyrium longicauda var longicauda Seeds   Satyrium is widespread in temperate and montane Africa, and two species are to be found in Asia (India, Sri Lanka, Burma). The genus comprises about 90 species of orchids, of which 37 are found in South Africa. With their small non-resupinate flowers (lip facing up) Satyrium species do not really look 'orchid-like'. The African species of the genus grow in fynbos, grassland and miombo woodland, and can sometimes be found in extensive and dense colonies of thousands of individuals, particularly in the year after a veld fire. Most species are pollinated by moths which are attracted by the evening-scented flowers, but pollination by carrion flies and bees also occurs in the genus. Carrion fly-pollinated Satyrium flowers emit an unpleasant carrion-like odour. Flies, apparently hoping to find a dead animal to lay their eggs in, are attracted by these flowers and pollinate them. An exciting find was the recent discovery that three South African Satyrium species are pollinated by sunbirds. Satyrium longicauda var longicauda commonly known as Blushing Bride Satyrium, Langsterttrewwa or Long-tailed Trewwa is a South African indigenous species from the Eastern Cape, KwaZulu-Natal, Limpopo, Mpumalanga and Western Cape Provinces where it can be found growing from Plettenberg Bay to tropical Africa. It is normally encountered in Albany Thicket, Fynbos and Savanna. It grows to 40 cm tall. This summer rainfall species has white or pink sweetly scented flowers during summer. The tuberous roots are edible and also used as love charms. Growing orchids from seed is a fairly specialized undertaking and it requires a bit of understanding of tissue culture techniques. If you have never grown orchids from seed we recommend that before attempting this you should first contact your local Orchid Society, or purchase a book on the subject, or both! Passiflora quadrangularis  Seeds Passiflora quadrangularis, also named Passiflora macrocarpa or Giant Granadilla, is a perennial vine, looking much like Passiflora alata, but its flowers are bigger. Native to Central and South America it is grown for its large ornamental fragrant flowers and the large fruits. It climbs by means of clinging tendrils and can be kept as a container plant. The long tendrils need lots of support for climbing. It is a fast growing vine which can grow over 15 meters high. It may be grown as a houseplant in a sunny window. A vigorous tropical vine with large bright green oval leaves, 7-13 cm long, 6-10 cm wide. The stems are quadrangular in shape. One of the loveliest and most exotic of the Passion flowers producing gorgeous purple, white and blue banded fragrant flowers, measuring 8-10 cm across in a long succession from mid-Summer to Autumn. It produces giant green to yellow Passion fruits reaching over one foot in diameter. The pulp is white or greyish and is not as flavourful as the common Passion fruit, but still tasty and often eaten or used in drinks. It rarely produces fruit under greenhouse conditions but makes up for this by the sheer glory of its flowers. Pruning is a must to keep the vine healthy. Prune off less vigorous growth and occasionally prune back vigorous growth to promote flowering. When established, and without care, the passion fruit can easily overtake other garden plants, shading them from sun. Protect from frost or plant in frost free areas. The Giant Granadilla is hardy to 35°F when mature, frost tender when young. Provide ideally a temperature of 15°- 28°C. Keep the atmosphere humid through the summer and place in full sun, can tolerate partial shade. Passiflora quadrangularis loves the warm humid Tropics. You may need to water your plants on a daily basis during the hottest summer months. During the winter the roots should be kept moist, but as growth will be much slower you will probably only need to water once a week, depending on growing temperature. It will do best in a loam based mix with a little peat moss. If their pot is too large or if they have an unrestricted root run then the whole plant will simply get bigger and bigger but it will refuse to flower and therefore produce the fruits. By limiting the pot size you are limiting the ability to grow and this is seen as a threat, so the natural mechanism is to produce seed for the next generation. A suitably sized pot for an adult plant would generally be of 30cm in diameter. On offer is a pack of 5 Seeds

Aristolochia is a large plant genus with over 500 species that is the namesake of the family Aristolochiaceae. Its members are commonly known as birthwort, pipevine or Dutchman's pipe and are widespread and occur in the most diverse climates. Aristolochia is a genus of evergreen and deciduous woody vines and herbaceous perennials. Aristolochia fimbriata, the White Veined Hardy Dutchman's Pipe, is an excellent hanging basket or container plant. Its small stem, make it more suitable than other Aristolochia for basket culture. This smaller tropical vine climbs to only 1-2 meters. It is native to Argentina, Paraguay and Southern Brazil. A rare find. A must for those who collect the unusual. It always attracts the attention by the strange flowers that are produced amongst the white-veined leaves.           Flowers are solitary and are formed under the leaves. The cute little 2.5cm to 5cm long yellow and brown flowers, resembling miniature elephant trunks, are produced along the stem all summer. The flowers are green on the tube, brown on the mouth entrance and veined purple brown inside. The mouth entrance has a bizarre and striking arrangement of hairs that stick out like a rough material. This is one of the most attractive foliage plants you can grow. This really cool deciduous groundcover Dutchman's Pipe spreads out to 75cm on little green stems. Each rounded leaf is medium green, highlighted with dramatic silver veining. In winter, the stems retreat back to the base if cultivated outside, so no invasive problems. Hardiness zones °C/5°F,-5°C/25°F) in winter. Aristolochia fimbriata likes to grow in a light and airy place, but not in direct sunlight. Keep summer temperatures from °C and winter temperatures above 10°C. Water regularly during the growth period, once or twice a week. Water no more than once a week during winter. Fertilize with a balanced fertilizer every third watering throughout the growing season. It grows best in rich, well-drained soil.

Gloriosa is a genus of ten species in the plant family Colchicaceae, and include the formerly recognised genus Littonia. They are native in tropical and southern Africa to Asia and naturalised in Australia and the Pacific as well as being widely cultivated worldwide. The most common English names are flame lily, fire lily, gloriosa lily, glory lily, superb lily, climbing lily, and creeping lily. They are tender, tuberous rooted deciduous climbing perennials, adapted to summer rainfall with a dormant dry season.         They are also very well suited to pot culture which means that you can successfully grow them in pots in areas that receive frost. If left undisturbed in containers they will multiply like crazy. They make excellent cut flowers and last up to 10 days in a vase. The genus name Gloriosa comes from the word gloriosus, which means handsome. Gloriosa greenii is similar in colour to Gloriosa lutea but is characterized by broad, thick, leathery petals that do not have frilly edges. This is a rare deep lemon yellow variant which produces the longest lasting flowers. It can grow up to 2m or more producing many flowers throughout the summer. The long lasting flowers make it excellent for cut flower use. The tubers go dormant during autumn. Each single tuber after flowering dies, producing two tubers. It has some medicinal uses and is used in preparations to treat intestinal worms, bruises, infertility, skin problems and impotence.

It is easily grown and can flower in the first season. It is a fast growing succulent normally forming solitary rosettes up to 20 cm high. Bulbine latifolia is popular among traditional healers in southern Africa. The roots are reportedly used to make concoctions which are taken orally to quell vomiting and diarrhoea, but also for a number of other ailments. Sow the seeds of Bulbine latifolia during spring.
