Abies concolor  Seeds Abies concolor commonly known as White Fir is native to the western United States, through the Rocky Mountains from southern Idaho south through Utah and Colorado to New Mexico, Arizona and also Nevada. When mature it can reach a height of 20-25m or even a little more used in a garden or landscape situation a height of 12-15m is more usual. In any case the White Fir is fairly slow growing at 30-45cm/year even with good growing conditions so it takes quite a while to outgrow its position in a large garden. It has a pyramidal shape and horizontal branching with the lower branches drooping toward the ground and for the best visual result it should be grown in an open area so the lower branches can touch the ground. When branched to the ground the shade is sufficient to kill off the underlying grass. The foliage is a wonderful blue-grey which appears much like that of the Colorado blue spruce. This makes it popular as an ornamental landscaping tree and as a Christmas tree. The foliage is also used in large quantities for Christmas wreaths and decorations owing to its soft needles and generally excellent needle retention and abundance. It is regarded as one of the most adaptable and less site exacting species of the fir genus and will withstand heat and drought better than most firs and can tolerate winter temperatures to -40°C. For germination the seeds require a period of moist pre-chilling also known as stratification before the seeds should be sown, this takes around 6 weeks in the fridge and is not difficult to do. On offer is a pack of 50 Seeds

Leucosidea sericea Seeds Common Names: Oldwood or Ouhout This is a small tree of great character which grows in the eastern parts of South Africa. It is a very versatile addition to the indigenous garden. Leucosidea sericea, commonly known as Oldwood or Ouhout, is a species of evergreen tree and large shrub native to the Afromontane regions of Southern Africa. It is the sole species in the genus Leucosidea. The generic name (Leucosidea) is derived from the Greek words for "white or grey appearance", while the species name (sericea) is the Latin for "silky" in reference to the silky hairs on the leaves of the tree. The ouhout is often a straggly shrub or a dense, small, evergreen tree, which grows up to 7m tall to 5m wide. It is single or multi-stemmed and branches low down. The bark is rough, reddish brown in colour and flakes off to reveal a smooth light brown under-bark. The leaves are alternately arranged, compound and covered with silky, silver hairs. Each leaf possesses 3 to 4 pairs of leaflets. The veins on the leaves are deeply sunken on the upper surface and protrude on the lower surface. The leaves are a dark green colour above and a lighter green colour below. The margins of the leaflets are deeply serrated. When the leaves are crushed they have a strong herb-like smell. The flowers are greenish-yellow in colour, star-shaped, and grow in spikes at the ends of young shoots in spring (August to September). The fruits are nut-like and about 3 mm in diameter (December to January). This tree is usually found growing in dense thickets at altitudes above metres. It can be found growing in open grassland, along river banks and on wooded, rocky ridges. It is usually found growing in damp conditions, on deep, sandy or clayey and often rocky soil. Leucosidea sericea occurs in the Eastern Cape, Lesotho, western KwaZulu-Natal, the eastern Free State, North West, Gauteng, Mpumalanga, and Limpopo provinces, Swaziland and Zimbabwe. The flowers and young shoots of this plant are browsed by cattle and goats in spring. It forms dense thickets on overgrazed, eroded or otherwise disturbed areas and can, therefore, become a problem plant on farm lands. The ouhout produces nectar which is probably utilised by bees and other insects. The wood makes good, durable fence posts in permanently wet soil even though it is soft. Apparentinous areas where the ouhout occurs near streams it is an indication that they are suitable for being stocked with trout. Zulu people use a paste made from the crushed leaves of Leucosidea sericea for treating ophthalmia (an eye ailment). The tree is used by the local people as a charm to protect the inhabitants of homesteads. The wood of this tree burns slowly and produces a lot of smoke like old and decaying wood. This together with the appearance of the flaky bark has given rise to the tree's common name of "oldwood". You're buying a pack of 20 Seeds We'll supply you with all the germination & care instructions.

The family Heteropyxidaceae, or lavender tree family as it is commonly known, is a small family with only two species in southern Africa. The local genus, Heteropyxis, is characterized by alternate, entire, simple leaves with secretory cavities. These emit a pleasant smell when crushed. The flowers are small and inconspicuous. This is a medium to large deciduous tree that grows to about 10 metres high. It occurs naturally on the coastal and inland regions of the KwaZulu-Natal Province. It is also found growing in Mpumalanga, Gauteng, Swaziland and Zimbabwe. The lavender tree has drooping foliage. The leaves are narrowly elliptic and are arranged spirally. They are shiny dark green above and paler green below, slightly hairy to hairless when mature. When crushed they produce a strong lavender scent. The leaf petiole is slender and pink over the lower half. Fouquieria is a genus of 11 species of desert plants and the sole genus in the family Fouquieriaceae. The genus includes the ocotillo (Fouquieria splendens) and the boojum tree or cirio (Fouquieria columnaris). They have semi- succulent stems with thinner spikes projecting from them and with leaves on the bases of the spikes. They are unrelated to cacti and do not look much like them; their stems are proportionately thinner than cactus stems and their leaves are larger.           These plants are native to northern Mexico and the bordering US states of Arizona, southern California, New Mexico, and parts of south-western Texas, favouring low, arid hillsides. The genus is named after French physician Pierre Fouquier (). The spines of Fouquieria develop in an unusual way, from a woody thickening on the outer (lower) side of the leaf petiole, which remains after the leaf blade and most of the petiole separate and fall from the plant. They grow well in pots and rockeries but sufficient drainage and a well-drained soil mix is of the utmost importance to avoid rot. Fouquieria species need full sun to high interior lighting if grown as an indoor plant. The flowers are pollinated by hummingbirds or carpenter bees. Fouquieria splendens commonly known as ocotillo, but also referred to as coachwhip, candlewood, slimwood, desert coral, Jacob's Staff, Jacob Cactus, and vine cactus is a plant native to the Sonoran Desert and Chihuahuan Desert in the Southwestern United States and northern Mexico. Ocotillo is not a true cactus. The bright crimson flowers appear especially after rainfall in spring, summer, and occasionally autumn.

Ficus abutilifolia is a small to medium-sized, deciduous to semi-deciduous tree up to 15 m high, though it seldom exceeds 5 m. The bark is whitish to yellowish white and smooth, powdery or somewhat flaking, and it is this conspicuous bark that is immediately apparent. The trunk is usually twisted or contorted, the branchlets stout and glabrous (lacking hairs) and marked with leaf and stipular scars. The large-leaved rock fig is generally encountered on rocky hillsides, rocky outcrops and along streams. The species is always found on or near rock outcrops, and while it is often found on granite, it grows also on sandstones, basalts and ironstone. The altitudinal range is from sea level to around 1 000 m and although able to tolerate light frost, it enjoys lower altitudes and hotter conditions. It is restricted to the African continent and here it has a widespread distribution, occurring in the South African provinces of KwaZulu-Natal, Mpumalanga, Gauteng, and the North-West up into Mozambique, Zimbabwe, Botswana, Namibia, Malawi, Zambia, Ethiopia, Somalia and west to Guinea. Yucca is a genus of perennial shrubs and trees in the agave family, Agavaceae. Its 40-50 species are notable for their rosettes of evergreen, tough, sword-shaped leaves and large terminal panicles of white or whitish flowers. They are native to the hot and dry (arid) parts of North America, Central America, South America, and the Caribbean. Yucca aloifolia commonly known as Spanish Bayonet has an erect trunk, 7 – 12cm in diameter, reaching up to 6m tall.           At around 6 meters it becomes top heavy and topples over. When that happens, the tip turns upward and keeps on growing. One can avoid this from happening by removing the top part of the trunk that supports the leaves. The head can then be placed onto soil where it will root and the remaining trunk will quickly form new heads along its length and around the cut edge. The trunk is armed with sharp pointed strap like leaves each about 60cm long. The young leaves near the growing tip stand erect; older ones are reflexed downward, and the oldest wither and turn brown, hanging around the lower trunk like a Hawaiian skirt. Eventually the tip of the trunk develops a 60cm long spike of white, purplish-tinged flowers, each blossom about 10cm across. After flowering, the trunk stops growing, but one or more lateral buds are soon formed, and the uppermost becomes a new terminal shoot. Any other buds become branches, but these are usually few, and the plant has an open, airy habit. Spanish bayonet also produces new buds, or offshoots, near the base of the trunk, forming a thicket.

Pinus banksiana  Seeds Pinus banksiana commonly known as Jack Pine is an eastern North American pine. Its native range in Canada is east of the Rocky Mountains from the Mackenzie River in the Northwest Territories to Cape Breton Island in Nova Scotia, and the north-central and northeast of the United States from Minnesota to Maine, with the southernmost part of the range just into northwest Indiana and northwest Pennsylvania. It is also known as grey pine and scrub pine. Pinus banksiana ranges from 9–22 m in height. Some jack pines are shrub-sized, due to poor growing conditions. They do not usually grow perfectly straight, resulting in an irregular shape similar to pitch pine (Pinus rigida). This pine often forms pure stands on sandy or rocky soil. It is fire-adapted to stand-replacing fires; with the cones remaining closed for many years, until a forest fire kills the mature trees and opens the cones, reseeding the burnt ground. The leaves are in fascicles of two, needle-like, twisted, slightly yellowish-green, and 2–4 cm long. Jack Pine cones are usually 5 cm and curved at the tip. The cones are 3–5 cm long, the scales with a small, fragile prickle that usually wear off before maturity, leaving the cones smooth. Unusually for a pine, the cones normally point forward along the branch, sometimes curling around it. That is an easy way to tell it apart from the similar lodge pole pine in more western areas of North America. The cones on mature trees are serotinous. They open when exposed to intense heat, greater than or equal to 50°C. The typical case is in a fire; however cones on the lower branches can open when temperatures reach 27°C due to the heat being reflected off the ground. Additionally, when temperatures reach −46°C, the cones will open, due to the nature of the resin. The bid amount is for 1 Seed

Beaucarnea is a genus of flowering plants that are native to Mexico, Belize, and Guatemala. Beaucarnea is sometimes treated as a synonym of the genus Nolina, with the four species being then transferred to that genus. Species include Beaucarnea gracilis, Beaucarnea guatemalensis, Beaucarnea pliabilis, Beaucarnea recurvata and Beaucarnea stricta. Beaucarnea recurvata, also named Nolina recurvata, the Ponytail Palm and Elephant Foot, is an evergreen tree in the Ruscaceae family, native to Mexico’s semi-desert areas. Beaucarneas are closely related to Yuccas and thrive under the same conditions. This plant is even suitable for growing indoors in colder climates. Beaucarnea recurvata usually has only one stem until it reaches 2.4m tall. Plants in nature will reach about 4.5m to 6m in height with a base about 3.5m across! The Ponytail Palm is a very unique looking tree. It features a large, wrinkled, swollen base and clusters of very thin, long, 2.5cm wide by 1.8m long, dark green grass-like leaves emerging from the top of the trunk. The graceful descent of the leaf clusters elicits the image of a pony's tail aimlessly swaying, hence the common name of ponytail palm. The swollen trunk stores water, which means that it doesn't need to be watered often. The small creamy white flowers are produced only on older trees, in mid-Summer. Although they are small, they come in large quantities and form a showy display. It is cold hardy to -5°C in winter. Older plants survive lower temperatures. Beaucarnea recurvata needs full sun to light shade. Use a mix with good drainage, for instance a good cactus mix. They are very drought tolerant. Water every 3 weeks during the growing season and fertilize it only once during this period. When the plant is in a pot, water it very sparingly during winter to prevent it from rotting. During the winter months, water only enough to keep the foliage from wilting. Over-watering is the single most frequent cause of failure when growing Beaucarneas.

Dombeya is a flowering plant genus of around 250 species. Traditionally included in the family Sterculiaceae, it is included in the expanded Malvaceae in the APG and most subsequent systematics. These plants are known by a number of vernacular names which sometimes, misleadingly, allude to the superficial similarity of flowering Dombeya to pears or hydrangeas, which are unrelated. They grow chiefly throughout Africa and Madagascar. The generic name Dombeya is in honour of Joseph Dombey, a French botanist and traveller in Peru and Chile (1742-1793). Dombeya pulchra is a South African indigenous species commonly known as Silver Snowball or Silver Wild Pear grows into a 7m tall tree. It has large leaves with white hairs below and beautiful white flowers from summer to autumn. This is a very attractive shrub or small tree ideal for the wooded or semi-shaded areas of your garden.  The silver white pear occurs mainly on the northeastern Drakensberg from Swaziland, through Mphumalanga to the lower parts of Limpopo Province. It has a somewhat restricted distribution, as it grows on rocky hillsides or mountains at high altitudes, in wooded kloofs or in wooded areas along stream banks. It is best sown in spring.

PHILODEDRON SELLOUM   Most philodendrons are climbers, but not this one. Philodendron Selloum (also called split leaf philodendron) grows as a large semi woody shrub with enormous glossy leaves and a single erect unbranched stem. The robust stem bears stout aerial rootlets between conspicuous leaf scars. The leaves are up to 0.9 m long, deeply dissected into many wavy-margined lobes and held on long petioles. Older and larger plants develop leaves that are more deeply dissected and more ruffled. Specimens grown indoors rarely flower. Philodendron can get as large as 4.6 m tall and 4.6 m wide with a stem 17.8 cm or more in diameter.   Philodendron grows best in fairly moist, well drained, fertile soil. It requires little care except occasional grooming should lower leaves become discoloured, and watering in times of dry weather. Take care in placing, though, lest it encroach on walkways or grow too close to buildings; a small specimen will get big! Light: Philodendrons don't like full sun. Grow tree philodendron in dappled or partial shade. Indoors, position in bright light, but not direct sun. Sunlight filtered through a curtain is good. Moisture: Not at all drought tolerant, tree philodendron should get regular watering. Keep the soil moderately moist by watering regularly. In the winter, keep the soil just barely moist. House plants should be misted regularly if the air is very dry.   View our other items by clicking on the shield:
