Its evergreen, spiny foliage is leathery and glossy. Insignificant, though fragrant, flowers bloom in spring followed by red drupes that attract birds. Ilex aquifolium is the most widely grown holly but there are 500 to 600 other species worldwide. English holly is a hardy tree or shrub, capable of surviving in most conditions, except where it is extremely wet. Diospyros whyteana 15 seeds "Bladder nut" This enticing little tree has so many wonderful features: dark green, strikingly glossy leaves; creamy fragrant flowers; unusual smooth, dark grey, almost black bark and distinctive reddish brown, papery, balloon-like fruit pods. Altogether, it is a very attractive and pleasing garden subject. The bladdernut is an evergreen shrub or small multi-stemmed tree with a straight trunk that branches low down to form a dense, round to pyramidal crown. The bark on young branches is yellow-green to pinkish, covered by fine coppery hairs; but smooth and blackish grey on older stems and branches. The shiny leaves, also with a fringe of ginger hairs, are leathery, dark green above and lighter below. An occasional bright red or orange leaf occurs adding to the overall attractiveness of this plant. Scented flowers, hanging from hairy stalks, appear in spring. They are bell-shaped, white to creamy yellow and male and female flowers occur on different trees. The fruits, borne throughout summer, are fleshy berries that turn scarlet when ripe. They are enclosed in inflated, bladder-like capsules that dry to red and remain on the tree for many months after the fruit has fallen and so may be found on the trees at almost any time of the year. Diospyros is relatively slow-growing and can be cultivated from seed, which should first be scratched (scarified) before sowing. Fresh seed germinates readily in four to eight weeks.

Polaskia is a genus of two tree -like cactus species, placed in the Cactaceae family. It is named after the American amateur botanist, Charles Polaski. Both species grows to 5 meters in height. Both present primitive characteristics, but Polaskia chichipe is nearer to Myrtillocactus while Polaskia chende is nearer to Stenocereus. The genus is found in the Southern Mexican states of Puebla and Oaxaca. They are columnar cacti which branches as it ages with many branches on a short trunk. Stems are ribbed with fairly shallow spaces between ribs. Areoles are spaced 2 or 3 cm apart along the ribs. Spines are short and stout, numbering 8-10 radials and one central. Spines may not be present at all - especially on mature plants.  Flowers are widely-opened cups of pinkish white or yellow-green - with or without spines. The fruits are small fleshy berries. They are considered fairly easy to grow and germinate freely from seed. These cacti are perfect for rockeries, where they will give your garden structural height or as potted plants on a sunny patio. Either way you are assured of many years of joy. Polaskia chichipe is a columnar cactus, cultivated for its edible fruits known as Chichituna, Chichipe or Chichibe. It is also grown for its valuable branches which, when dried make excellent fuel wood. Plants under cultivation have larger and sweeter fruits and a much longer period of fruit production. From spring onwards the plant will begin to grow and watering should be increased gradually until late spring when the plant should be in full growth.
