If you could travel back in time, the period from 1660 to 1700 would make one of the most exciting destinations in history. It is the age of Samuel Pepys and the Great Fire of London; bawdy comedy and the libertine court of Charles II; Christopher Wren in architecture, Henry Purcell in music and Isaac Newton in science - the civil wars are over and a magnificent new era has begun. But what would it really be like to live in Restoration Britain? Where would you stay and what would you eat? What would you wear and where would you do your shopping? The third volume in the series of Ian Mortimer's bestselling Time Traveller's Guides answers the crucial questions that a prospective traveller to seventeenth-century Britain would ask. How much should you pay for one of those elaborate wigs? Should you trust a physician who advises you to drink fresh cow's urine to cure your gout? Why are boys made to smoke in school? And why are you unlikely to get a fair trial in court? People's lives are changing rapidly - from a world of superstition and religious explanation to rationalism and scientific calculation. In many respects the period sees the tipping point between the old world and the new as fear and uncertainty, hardship and eating with your fingers give way to curiosity and professionalism, fine wines and knives and forks. Travelling to Restoration Britain encourages us to reflect on the customs and practices of daily life - and this unique guide not only teaches us about the seventeenth century but makes us look with fresh eyes at the modern world. It is ordered on demand from our supplier and is usually dispatched within 6 - 13 working days Collector's item, landmark in the history of the American tour guide, snapshot of North American in the 1870s - Appleton's Handbook warrants a unique place on the 'must buy' booklist of any traveller, railway enthusiast, historian or americanaphile. Originally produced as the railway networks of the United States of America and Canada were stretching across the vast continent, and as tourism by rail became a serious pastime for the burgeoning middle classes, it was the first tourist guide specifically organized around railway journeys, and to this day offers a glimpse through the carriage window of a continent lost to history. This is a facsimile of the actual book - often referred to as 'Appleton's Guide' - that inspired the Great American Railroad Journeys television series with Michael Portillo, possibly the only surviving example of the 1879 edition. It is an exact copy with a removable belly-band. A memoir looking at the region from the traveller's point of view rather than the politics of the era. Looks at wonders and strangeness of the Levant region. `Don't worry Mr Wood, nothing has ever happened in Basra' said the Iraqi Major General in charge of the port when I paid a courtesy call on him after my arrival. Recalling Sinbad the sailor and the arrival of the Anglo Indian Expeditionary Force to throw out the Turks in 1914, I took this advice with a pinch of salt and was justified in June 1966 when Iraq in company with all other Arab nations broke off diplomatic relations with us sparking student riots against our consulate, the breaking of many windows and our departure. Before that the unexpected had happened in Beirut where the Americans arrived dramatically to quell a civil war in 1956 to relieve a non-existent threat to a temporary garrison of the staff of our Embassy there waiting to defend the place against a non-existent mob. This account of a few Foreign Office postings in the Middle East may show what life was like for a junior diplomat in 50s and 60s. The dig at Nimrud in 1956 under the inspired leadership of Max Mallowan and his wife Agatha Christie is also recalled from the social point of view and is a reminder of the glories of the ancient past many of which have been destroyed by the recent depravations of the fanatics. It should be added that Agatha's contribution is not generally recognised in archaeological publications but her management of the administration of the dig from weekly baths to the sewing on of buttons, from proper coffee to decent arak and even typing of other people's less inspired writings were phenomenal. There are also photographs taken by the author of this dig and one on the cover of the canebrake at Khosr. Gill's columns every Sunday - for his fearlessness, his perception, and the laughter-and-tear-provoking one-liners - but mostly because he was the best. 'By miles the most brilliant journalist of our age', as Lynn Barber put it. This is the definitive collection of a voice that was silenced too early but that can still make us look at the world in new and surprising ways. In the words of Andrew Marr, A.. A. Gill was 'a golden writer'. There was nothing that he couldn't illuminate with his dazzling prose. Wherever he was - at home or abroad - he found the human story, brought it to vivid life, and rendered it with fierce honesty and bracing compassion. And he was just as truthful about himself. There have been various collections of A. A. Gill's journalism - individual compilations of his restaurant and TV criticism, of his travel writing and his extraordinary feature articles. This book showcasesthe very best of his work: the peerlessly funny criticism, the extraordinarily knowledgeable food writing, assignments throughout the world, and reflections on life, love, and death. Drawn from a range of publications, including the Sunday Times, Vanity Fair, Tatler and Australian Gourmet Traveller, The Ivy Cookbook and his books on England and America, it is by turns hilarious, uplifting, controversial, unflinching, sad, funny and furious.
