This item is sold brand new. It is ordered on demand from our supplier and is usually dispatched within 7 - 12 working days Now into its seventh edition and written by Philip Briggs, the world's leading writer of guidebooks to Africa, Bradt's Rwanda has been the go-to guide for visitors to this historical and resurgent 'Land of a Thousand Hills' for nearly two decades, and it continues to be in a class of its own when it comes to in-depth information on this emerald slice of East Africa. With freshly researched and updated details on developments across the country, Bradt's Rwanda includes up-to-date maps of rapidly modernising Kigali, information on hiking to the summit of Mount Bisoke and a newly expanded chapter on excursions into the neighbouring DRC. In this new edition are extensive and recently updated maps and natural history information, details of kayak and canoe excursions on Lake Kivu and the Mukungwa River, all you need to know about tracking not only mountain gorillas in Rwanda's Volcanoes National Park but also lowland gorillas in the Congo, and information about overnight stays on tea plantations at Sorwathe or Gisovu. Also covered are Nyungwe Forest National Park, where a wealth of endemic birds and primates inhabit the largest surviving montane forest in East Africa; Nyanza, where the hilltop Rukari Palace Museum marks the site of the old mwami's (king's) palace; and the National/Ethnographic Museum of Rwanda, the top cultural site in Rwanda's second city, Huye (Butare). Coverage of nearby cities and national parks in the neighbouring DRC has been expanded since last edition, providing all the necessary information to take an excursion into Rwanda's enormous and poorly understood neighbour. Rwanda continues to change and develop at an unprecedented pace, and there's hardly a more accessible part of Africa to be found anywhere on the continent. It's no less intriguing for the convenience, however, and Rwanda's superlative natural attractions seem to improve by the day, with growing animal populations and an on-going rhino reintroduction program in Akagera National Park. Having now gone through nearly 18 years of editions, Bradt's Rwanda is not only the most in-depth guide available, but also the guide with the longest history in the country itself. Features Summary Rwanda Travel Guide - Travel and holiday advice featuring Kigali accommodation and highlights, gorilla tracking and wildlife. Also including guides, tour operators... Hardcover. English. Horace Cox, London. 1876 2nd ed. ISBN: n/a. 734 pp & 6pp ads at back, frontispiece, illustrated title page, 14 plates, numerous text illustrations, tables. Original somewhat scuffed green cloth over bevelled boards, front ep taped, with ownership stamp. Title page, facing illustration and title page heavily foxed. Page 455 is loosely inserted. This was published in seventeen parts, and is a guide to travellers, explorers, and settlers, founded on the experiences of the authors, and referring incidentally to South Africa. Wallis (J.P.R.) Thomas Baines, second edition, Cape Town 1976, pages 157-8. 'Apparently through the undertaking (the publication of Nature and Art) he came to know an ex-artillery officer, W.B. Lord, who had travelled in Canada and Asia and now proposed that he and Baines should collaborate to put out a travellers' handbook, something on the lines of Galton's Art of Travel. It was a bulky work of some eight hundred quarto pages issued serially towards the end of 1868, and involved Baines in a great deal of exacting preparatory work. He contributed the major part of the text and practically all the illustrations, some of which he cut on wood, having taught himself the art.' 'William Lord and Thomas Baines intended Shifts and Expedients to be a wide-ranging manual of instruction on the art of surviving in, and enjoying, the great outdoors of the nineteenth century. Pooling their considerable experience of strange lands they produced an encyclopaedia of practical living for the aspirant explorer of a hundred years ago. Everything is explained: wagons and boats, horses and oxen, tents and firearms, hunting and fishing, observing and collecting, carpentry and metal-working, camping requisites, bush cuisine, medical improvisation, the best ways to cross rivers, to move heavy objects, to build huts. The work is lavishly illustrated with wood-engravings by Baines. Mendelssohn (Sidney) South African Bibliography Vol. 1 Book No: 2501231

Hard cover without dustjacket. Ex Library but in a very good condition. Folding rigging chart at rear. An engaging and informative first-hand account of the last 'grain race' of maritime history, from respected travel writer Eric Newby. In 1939, a young Eric Newby - later renowned as a travel writer of exceptional talent - set sail aboard Moshulu, the largest sailing ship still employed in the transportation of grain from Australia to Europe. Every year from 1921 to 1939, the vessels involved in the grain trade would strive to find the shortest, fastest passage home - 'the grain race' - in the face of turbulent seas, atrocious weather conditions and hard graft. First published in 1956, 'The Last Grain Race', featuring many photographs from the author's personal collection, celebrates both the spirit of adventure and the thrill of sailing on the high seas. Newby's first-hand account - engaging and informative, with frequent bursts of humour and witty observations from both above and below deck - chronicles this classic sailing voyage of the Twenties and Thirties, and records the last grain race of maritime history.   NO SHIPPING OUTSIDE THE BORDERS OF THE REPUBLIC OF SOUTH AFRICA
