Cover from unknown origin within ZAR addressed to "p k Kromdraai, Distrik Middelburg" with Standerston backstamp of 12 May 1900 and Trichardsfontein cds of same date. Putzel lists 2 offices for Trichardsfontein. The first, 1890 - 1899, closed due to the Boer War, but this cover shows that the post office/agency was still operational or the cds was still being used. The second office is listed as being open from 1904 to 1906 whereafter it was renamed Trichardt.  Both datestamps are very rare. Trichardtfontein, 20 kms east of Kinross, was founded as a new Dutch Reformed parish and proclaimed a town in 1906. The town was apparently named for Carel Trichardt, eldest son of Voortrekker leader Louis Trichardt.  As per scans below.

Subtitle: Dr Leander Starr Jameson, the Inspiration for Kipling's Masterpiece Author: Chris Ash Publisher: 30 Degrees South Publishers / Helion () ISBN-10: ISBN-13: Condition: Very Good Binding: Softcover Pages: 384 Dimensions: 23.5 x 15.6 x 2 cm +++ by Chris Ash +++ The famous poem If by Rudyard Kipling is based on the life of Jameson, and the suffering he endured as a result of the doomed raid that he and his Rhodesian and Bechuanaland policemen carried out against Paul Kruger's Transvaal Republic in . In this engaging biography, Chris Ash recounts the life of this colonial statesman. He was an enigmatic man: when he died The Times estimated that his astonishing personal sway over his followers was equaled only by that of Parnell, the Irish patriot. During the fervor of the South African diamond rush Jameson established a small medical practice in Kimberley in ; it was here that he met and forged a lifelong friendship with Cecil John Rhodes. Jameson's thirst for adventure, coupled with Rhodes's dream of expanding the British Empire from the Cape to Cairo, led to the occupation of Mashonaland in , with Jameson having laid the groundwork in his political dealings with Lobengula, king of the Matabele. This is Jameson's story: from Administrator of Mashonaland, to the 'invasion' of Portuguese East Africa (Mozambique), the Matabele War, the infamous 'Jameson Raid' and his subsequent trial and incarceration in London.   A passion for books and a passion for collecting fine editions was the recipe that created the successful group of bookshops in Johannesburg called Bookdealers.   REGIMENT BOTHA TITLE BADGE Named or the Prime Minister and Boer general, Regiment Botha was formed on April 1 1934 at Ermelo and recruited in the then-northern and eastern Transvaal. By 1939 there were two battalions but only the second was mobilised on June 19, 1940. The unit was brigaded with 3 Transvaal Scottish and the SA Irish and served in Ethiopia. It arrived in North Africa as part of 5 SA Brigade in May 1941 and met its nemesis at the hands of the Deutsches Afrika Korps on Totensontag, November 23, 1941 when, as Major G Tylden puts it, it was “badly cut up at Sidi Rezegh and suffered heavily”. The next month, the survivors of 2 Regt Botha and the other units of 5 SA Brigade were reorganised into a composite battalion for further service. The identity of the other units disappeared and after reinforcement by a draft of Witwatersrand Rifles, 2 Regt Botha was back at full strength by April 1942. The regiment fought at first Alamein from July to October 1942, helping to stop Panzerarmee Afrika in its tracks. The unit returned to South Africa in January 1943. In August, 2 Regt Botha and Regiment President Steyn merged “for the duration” to form the Botha-President Steyn Armoured Commando, assigned to 6 SA Armoured Division. Once in Italy, the unit as broken up, with some going to the Pretoria Regiment and other to the Imperial Light Horse (now Light Horse Regiment). In 1951 2 Regiment Botha became the Regiment Christiaan Beyers.   Current role: Motorised infantry =  Current base: Barberton Battle honours: Motto: Altyd gereed (Always ready).       Condition:  Good. Complete. Uncleaned.   Sold as seen in the images. Images form part for the description.
