From the acclaimed master of action and suspense. The all time classic Millions of pounds in gold bullion are being pirated in the Irish Sea. Investigations by the British Secret Service, and a sixth sense, have bought Philip Calvert to a bleak, lonely bay in the Western Highlands. But the sleepy atmosphere of Torbay is deceptive. The place is the focal point of many mysterious disappearances. Even the unimaginative Highland Police Sergeant seems to be acting a part. But why? This story is Alistair MacLean at his enthralling best. It has all the edge-of-the-seat suspense, and dry humour that millions of readers have devoured for years.

This item is sold brand new. It is ordered on demand from our supplier and is usually dispatched within 8 - 15 working days On March 11, 2003, in Brownsville, Texas - one of America's poorest cities - John Allen Rubio and Angela Camacho murdered their three young children. The apartment building in which the brutal crimes took place was already rundown, and in their aftermath a consensus developed in the community that it should be destroyed. It was a place, neighbours felt, that was plagued by spiritual cancer. In 2008, journalist Laura Tillman covered the story for The Brownsville Herald. The questions it raised haunted her, particularly one asked by the sole member of the city's Heritage Council to oppose demolition: is there any such thing as an evil building? Her investigation took her far beyond that question, revealing the nature of the toll that the crime exacted on a city already wracked with poverty. It sprawled into a six-year inquiry into the larger significance of such acts, ones so difficult to imagine or explain that their perpetrators are often dismissed as monsters alien to humanity. With meticulous attention and stunning compassion, Tillman surveyed those surrounding the crimes, speaking with the lawyers who tried the case, the family's neighbours and relatives and teachers, even one of the murderers: John Allen Rubio himself, whom she corresponded with for years and ultimately met in person. The result is a brilliant exploration of some of our age's most important social issues, from poverty to mental illness to the death penalty, and a beautiful, profound meditation on the truly human forces that drive them. It is disturbing, insightful, and mesmerizing in equal measure. Features Summary A harrowing, profoundly personal investigation of the causes, effects, and communal toll of a deeply troubling crime - the brutal murder of three young children by their parents in the border city of Brownsville... Symptoms range from muscle soreness and pain to pinched nerves to potentially more permanent disabilities, including serious body injuries. One safe, quickly productive way to address the problem is through a simple therapy that can be done anywhere, anytime, and without special equipment: stretching. This new edition of Brad Walker's best-selling book on the subject presents 135 unique stretching exercises designed to help repair the body and make it more flexible, fit, and relaxed. The book begins with clear, detailed descriptions of important principles of anatomy and physiology, the benefits of stretching, different forms of stretching, rules to remember, and how to stretch properly. It also focuses on the kinds of stretches that are most helpful in the alleviation or rehabilitation of specific sports injuries. Organized by body part, "The Anatomy of Stretching "presents stretching exercises in a uniform style accompanied by full-color anatomical illustrations. Equally useful for fitness fans, pro or amateur athletes, coaches and personal trainers, and healthcare practitioners, this new edition contains 20 new stretches; expanded physiology and anatomy information; and a revised numbering system that makes the stretches easier to reference. An expanded appendix includes a longer resources section and a helpful chart describing the top five stretches for each sport and sports injury. This is a story of the difficulties which an Italian prisoner of war and later immigrant family to South Africa had to endure, and the toll it took on the family, and on the author as the daughter of the family in particular. It is especially the story of her battle to overcome the trauma of her childhood and youth, and the Sicilian family culture of that time. She has learned to value her heritage, and to forgive both herself and those close to her, and finally to accept and love herself as a complete and beautiful person. Her story is one of trauma, depression, awareness, acceptance, forgiveness, and ultimately, of compassion and love. About the Author Savina Plescia Redpath was born in Palermo, Sicily in 1948. She emigrated to South Africa, at the age of 13 months, with her mother and eldest brother, to join her father who had returned to South Africa in 1947 after having been imprisoned there at Zonderwater Prisoner-of-War Camp during the 2nd World War.    Author(s): Savina Plescia Redpath  Title:      Falling in Love with Myself  ISBN: 978 1 920535 95 7  Publisher/place:  Kima Books/Power of Words, Johannesburg  This Edition: first   Year of Publication:  2016  Binding: paperback Number of pages:  188  Weight:  210g  Condition:   This item is sold brand new, is in stock at our store and available for immediate dispatch.  - This is an autographed copy, limited number available.

Since the first world exhibition more than a century and a half ago, these fairs have represented the promise of a more harmonious world, with their ambitious displays of their respective era's greatest artistic and scientific accomplishments. Here, Maes shows how time has taken its toll on these architectural monuments and pavilions--now often decayed, abandoned or adrift from their original purpose--highlighting their faded glory against their utopian aspirations. Despite their present condition, many of these buildings remain inspirational as architectural specimens, for the sheer adventurousness of their design. Maes' photographs are ordered chronologically and range from London's Great Exhibition (1851) through to the most recent expo in Shanghai, 2010. Much had happened over this period. More battles had been fought, won and lost on both sides, but now the American strength was feeding in to France with both men and material. With the mighty push on the French/American Front at St Mihiel on 12 September and then along the Meuse-Argonne Front from the 26th, once more masses of men and aircraft were put into the air. They were opposed by no less a formidable German fighter force than had the squadrons in April 1917 although the numbers were not in their favour. Nevertheless, the German fighter pilots were able to inflict an even larger toll of British, French and American aircraft shot down, making this the worst month for the Allied flyers during the whole of World War I - and this just a mere six weeks from the war's bloody finale. As with their previous book, the authors of Black September 1918 have analysed the daily events throughout September with the use of lists of casualties and claims from both sides. The book also contains seven detailed appendices examining the victory claims of all the air forces that fought during September 1918. Although it is difficult to pin-point exactly who was fighting who high above the trenches, by pouring over maps and carefully studying almost all the surviving records, the picture of `who got who' in the air slowly begins to emerge with deadly accuracy. Coinciding with the centenary of the end of World War I, Black September 1918 is a profusely illustrated and essential reference piece to understanding one of the crucial months of war in the skies. Whittaker returns to his roots in this updated edition, casting a sceptical eye over recent developments, catching up with old acquaintances and considering the toll that half a century of ridicule and a couple of decades of privatisation have wrought upon his beloved pastime. As Andrew Martin notes in his Foreword, this is `one of the best books ever written about rail enthusiasm'. Equally it is a poetically written memoir of growing up in a more innocent age, a hymn to British eccentricity and to the virtues of observing the world around you: `Spotters - of trains, planes, buses or birds - are a last redoubt for something rapidly vanishing from our lives: looking outward, seeing, observing. People notice things less and less these days, while watching things more and more.' Praise for the first edition: `An elegy: for the steam trains already vanishing when Whittaker's hobby began in 1964; for the short-lived diesel age which followed; for an era of near innocence.' Times Literary Supplement `Whittaker writes with humour and considerable evocative power... For anyone who will admit to having a childhood brush with this now derided hobby, Platform Souls brings it all rushing back.'
