In South Africa he played for Western Province in 133 matches, scoring 9,087 runs at an average of 41.88.  At the end of 1991, South Africa was invited to rejoin the   International Cricket Conference. Unlike the Civil War, unlike the French Revolution, the American Revolution produced no lingering social trauma in the United States-it is a historic event widely applauded by Americans today as both necessary and desirable. But one consequence of this happy unanimity is that the chief losers of the War of Independence-the American Loyalists-have fared badly at the hands of historians. This explains, in part, why the account of the Revolution recorded by self-professed Loyalist and Chief Justice of the Superior Court of Massachusetts, Peter Oliver, has heretofore been so routinely overlooked. Oliver's manuscript, entitled "The Origins & Progress of the American Rebellion," written in 1781, challenges the motives of the founding fathers, and depicts the revolution as passion, plotting, and violence. His descriptions of the leaders of the patriot party, of their program and motives, are unforgiving, bitter, and inevitably partisan. But it records the impressions of one who had experienced these events, knew most of the combatants intimately, and saw the collapse of the society he had lived in. His history is a very important contemporary account of the origins of the revolution in Massachusetts, and is now presented here in it entirety for the first time. Features Summary One difficulty in writing a balanced history of the American Revolution arises in part from its success as a creator of our nation and our nationalistic sentiment... In a Different Time - The Inside Story of the Delmas Four - Peter Harris  Umuzi - 2008 - 318pp - Paperback:good, tight.   This title tells the story of four young South Africans who embark on a mission that will ultimately take them to Death Row. They are a highly trained and experienced assassination squad reporting directly to Chris Hani. The narrative details their infiltration into the country, their operations, arrest and subsequent trial. These men are the foot soldiers who sacrificed everything. As their trial unfolds with their attorney fighting to save them from the gallows, so too does the story of their own lives and the choices they make. The story is set in a South Africa gripped by unrest and political tension, when the ANC was in exile and repression at its height. It tells of the extraordinary lengths people go to in order to fight for what they believe, and the acts people will commit to preserve the status quo. The characters are linked by bizarre coincidence and tragedy in a true account narrated by their attorney. Woven through the narrative is the construction of a bomb and its journey towards its target, and the circumstances which enable that meeting.

It draws you in from the very first page -- Sunday Express A weird and hugely enjoyable blend of Aldous Huxley's The Devils of Loudon and Angela Carter's Nights at the Circus -- New Statesman With this bold, inventive book, Harris confirms her position as one of Britain's most popular novelists... Fans will be delighted by the way this novel complements her earlier works. At the same time, the author's experiments with structure and voice ensure this story is fresh and compelling -- Daily Mail Hugely enjoyable... Author: Peter Ackroyd Signed by the Author Publisher: MacMillan (2011) Edition: 120 to 225 Limited Edition Proof Copy ISBN-10: 0230706398 ISBN-13: 9780230706392 Condition: Very good +. Minor edgewear to the covers. Stains to the textblock. Internally bright a tightly bound copy. Binding: Softcover Pages: 464 Dimensions: 23.3 x 15.4 x 3 cm +++ by Peter Ackroyd (Signed by the Author) +++ Having written enthralling biographies of London and of its great river, the Thames, Peter Ackroyd now turns to England itself. This first volume of six takes us from the time that England was first settled, more than 15,000 years ago, to the death in 1509 of the first Tudor monarch, Henry VII. In it, Ackroyd takes us from Neolithic England, which we can only see in the most tantalising glimpses -- a stirrup found in a grave, some seeds at the bottom of a bowl -- to the long period of Roman rule; from the Dark Ages when England was invaded by a ceaseless tide of Angles, Saxons and Jutes, to the twin glories of medieval England -- its great churches and monasteries and its common law. With his extraordinary skill for evoking time and place, he tells the familiar story of king succeeding king in rich prose, with profound insight and some surprising details. The food we ate, the clothes we wore, the punishments we endured, even the jokes we told are all found here, too.
