By Neil McCart 1999. Hard cover with dust cover, 208 pages. Very good condition; tightly bound, neat and clean. Under 1kg. This is the first, and only, book to tell the full stories of the last three Ark Royals in detail; the wartime Ark Royal which saw so much action in the first two years of the Second World War; the Ark Royal of the 1950s, 60s and 70s which, during the years of intense antagonism between the superpowers, projected British maritime air power all over the world; and the present Ark Royal which will take the Fleet Air Arm into the 21st century. The in - depth research has allowed the author to cover the careers of all three carriers, through each year of their operational service with the Royal Navy. There are 165 top quality photographs, including 15 in colour, covering their careers, from the launching of the third Ark Royal in 1937, right through to the present Ark Royals final deployment in the last decade of the 20th century.

Author: Marie Ndiaye Publisher: Maclehouse Press () ISBN-10: ISBN-13: Condition: Very Good Binding: Softcover Pages: 288 Dimensions: 23.2 x 15.2 x 2.2 cm +++ by Marie Ndiaye +++ Forty-year-old Norah leaves Paris, her family and her career as a lawyer to visit her father in Dakar. It is an uncomfortable reunion - she is asked to use her skills as a lawyer to get her brother out of prison - and ultimately the trip endangers her marriage and her relationship with her own daughter, and drives her to the very edge of madness. Fanta, on the other hand, leaves Dakar to follow her husband Rudy to rural France. And it is through Rudy's bitter and guilt-ridden perspective that we see Fanta stagnate with boredom in this alien, narrow environment. Khady is forced into exile from Senegal because of poverty, because her husband is dead, because she is lonely and in despair. With other illegal immigrants, she embarks on a journey which takes her nowhere, but from which she will never return.    A passion for books and a passion for collecting fine editions was the recipe that created the successful group of bookshops in Johannesburg called Bookdealers.   Following the Red Arrows - on a Wing and a Prayer - 21 Years - 2000 Displays Carole Turner Published by Newton (1989) Bumped and worn pictorial boards. Gift inscription, previous owner's name. FOREWORD "Carole Turner has been a fan of the Red Arrows for over a decade, and thoroughly deserves the title of "Number One Fan". I worked with the Red Arrows for four years; one year on Second Line, before moving on to First Line for three years. In 1986 we had the Far East Tour to Indonesia, and after that, travelling around Europe did not have the same appeal! Then in 1987 I met Gill Howie - she was part of a fan club who call themselves "The Friends of the Red Arrows", and later that year, through Gill I met Carole. Between the two of them, they mangaged to change my attitude to what was then "just a job" - that of flying in the backseat of a Hawk with Red 7, Flt Lt Adrian Thurley. They made me appreciate what is a once-in-a-lifetime job. How many people can say that they have flown with the Red Arrows? (Although we never flew backseat during displays). Not many! Adrian would let me fly the jet on transits between airfields, and the stories I told the girls always made them green with envy! During 1987 my skills improved to such an extent that I was regularly flying alongside Charlie McIlroy (about 15 feet away) and much closer than some of the other backseaters would dare!!! In 1988 I took Carole's handwritten manuscript to Cyprus with me where I read it while sunbathing. To me it was a compelling story; once I started, I hated having to put it down again to do something else, and was always trying to get back to it. Carole has even managed to convert the Groundcrew into fans, and once you have read the book you will become a fan of the World's best Aerobatic Team (I have seen none better in my travels!) THE RED ARROWS." Please check images for condition.       Conditions: Please read conditions before bidding. Portugal's three wars in Africa in Angola, Mozambique and Portuguese Guinea (Guin-Bissau today) lasted almost 13 years - longer than the United States Army fought in Vietnam. Yet they are among the most underreported conflicts of the modern era. Commonly referred to as Lisbon's Overseas War (Guerra do Ultramar) or in the former colonies, the War of Liberation (Guerra de Liberta£o), these struggles played a seminal role in ending white rule in Southern Africa. Though hardly on the scale of hostilities being fought in South East Asia, the casualty count by the time a military coup d'tat took place in Lisbon in April 1974 was significant. It was certainly enough to cause Portugal to call a halt to violence and pull all its troops back to the Metropolis. Ultimately, Lisbon was to move out of Africa altogether, when hundreds of thousands of Portuguese nationals returned to Europe, the majority having left everything they owned behind. Independence for all the former colonies, including the Atlantic islands, followed soon afterwards. Lisbon ruled its African territories for more than five centuries, not always undisputed by its black and mestizo subjects, but effectively enough to create a lasting Lusitanian tradition. That imprint is indelible and remains engraved in language, social mores and cultural traditions that sometimes have more in common with Europe than with Africa. Today, most of the newspapers in Luanda, Maputo - formerly Lourenco Marques - and Bissau are in Portuguese, as is the language taught in their schools and used by their respective representatives in international bodies to which they all subscribe. Indeed, on a recent visit to Central Mozambique in 2013, a youthful member of the American Peace Corps told this author that despite having been embroiled in conflict with the Portuguese for many years in the 1960s and 1970s, he found the local people with whom he came into contact inordinately fond of their erstwhile 'colonial overlords'. As a foreign correspondent, Al Venter covered all three wars over more than a decade, spending lengthy periods in the territories while going on operations with the Portuguese army, marines and air force. In the process he wrote several books on these conflicts, including a report on the conflict in Portuguese Guinea for the Munger Africana Library of the California Institute of Technology. Portugal's Guerrilla Wars in Africa  represents an amalgam of these efforts. At the same time, this book is not an official history, but rather a journalist's perspective of military events as viewed by somebody who has made a career of reporting on overseas wars, Africa's especially. Venter's camera was always at hand; most of the images used between these covers are his. His approach is both intrusive and personal and he would like to believe that he has managed to record for posterity a tiny but vital segment of African history. HARDBACK, 544 PAGES WITH PHOTOS & MAPS Published December 2013

The third, and last, installment of Fiona McIntosh's gripping epic fantasy, set in a world torn by revenge, love and ancient magic. Loethar the Tyrant has established himself as the King of the Devona Set. Loethar no longer believes Prince Leo, the rightful heir to the throne, to be dead and hunts him and his outlaw allies; but another heir also exists - one the usurper should fear more than a prince on the run...and she has possession of the ancient Valisar enchantment. Having learnt the truth of her parentage, her world and her family's fate, she must decide whether to stay and face the King's wrath, or escape back into the world she has hidden within for so many years.   Harper Voyager, .
