' The Marriages Between Zones Three, Four and Five' is the second volume in Doris Lessing's celebrated space fiction series, 'Canopus in Argos: Archives'. In this interlinked quintet of novels, she creates a new extraordinary cosmos where the fate of the Earth is influenced by the rivalries and interactions of three powerful galactic empires, Canopus, Sirius and their enemy, Puttiora. Blending myth, fable and allegory, Doris Lessing's astonishing visionary creation both reflects and redefines the history of our own world from its earliest beginnings to an inevitable, tragic self-destruction. 'The Marriages' is set in the indeterminate lands of the Zones, strange realms which encircle the Earth. Zone Three, a peaceful, contented, matriarchal paradise, is ruled by the gentle Queen Al. Ith.; the neighbouring Zone Four is a land given to war and chaos, controlled by the brutal warrior-king, Ben-Ata. Their marriage, a melding of the extreme male and female principles, threatens to destabilise the entire galactic empire. This item is sold brand new. It is ordered on demand from our supplier and is usually dispatched within 7 - 12 working days Three Funerals and a Wedding follows the story of four businesses undergoing radical change and shows how they succeeded or failed. When you introduce new technology into a business it is obvious, or should be, that you are putting in a place a new system. But the same is true whenever you change the organisational structure, put in place a new incentive scheme, acquire or merge with another business, or sometimes make what appears to be the simplest adjustment to a minor process. The impact of this change can be wide-ranging and completely unexpected, and unless the new system is explicitly designed to produce precisely the results you want, you will, with 100% certainty, get precisely the ones you don't, with profound or even fatal consequences for the organisation concerned. These stories are of four business that faced this challenge - Laura Ashley, The Burton Group, Dixons and the Compass Group. What they did and what the outcome was is explored within the book. They are still all around today, albeit in different forms; but in some cases, they very nearly weren't. The stories are based on the author's personal experiences at the time and reflections since, but they are presented not merely as uncorroborated anecdotes - they include insights from other people involved, documented evidence from the time and since, and in all cases are laid out with clarity. They all take the same form: the story as it appeared at the same time; a discussion of the consequences and of the wider context; and finally, lessons and conclusions which can be drawn from the experience. When read together, these long narrative pieces illuminate the defining moments in Tobias Eaton's life. The first three pieces in this volume - "The Transfer," "The Initiate," and "The Son" - follow Tobias's transfer from Abnegation to Dauntless, his Dauntless initiation, and the first clues that a foul plan is brewing in the leadership of two factions. It is ordered on demand from our supplier and is usually dispatched within 7 - 11 working days The beloved spiritual teacher builds on the message of his enduring New York Times and international bestseller The Four Agreements with this profound guide that takes us deeper into the tradition of Toltec wisdom, helping us find and use the hidden power within us to achieve our fullest lives. In The Four Agreements, Don Miguel Ruiz introduced seekers on the path to enlightenment to the tenets of Mesoamerican spiritual culture-the ancient Toltec. Now, he takes us deeper into Native American practice, and asks us to consider essential questions that drive our lives and govern our spiritual power. Three eternal questions can help us into our power and use it judiciously: Who am I? What is real? How do I express love? At each stage in our lives, we must ask these simple yet deeply profound questions. Finding the answers will open the door to the next stage in our development, and eventually lead us to our complete, truest selves. But as Don Miguel Ruiz makes clear, we suffer if we do not ask these questions-or if we fail to pay attention to their answers-because we either never act on our power or use it destructively. Only when power is anchored in our identity and in reality will it be able to be in synch with the universe-and be of true benefit to ourselves and to others. The three questions provide a practical framework that allows readers to engage with Ruiz's transformative message and act as a vehicle for overcoming fear and anxiety and discovering peace of mind. An essential guide for all travelers pursuing self-knowledge, understanding, and acceptance, The Three Questions is the next step in our unique spiritual metamorphosis. Years ago, everything changed. Phantoms, massive beasts of nightmare, began terrorizing the world. At the same time, four girls¿the Effigies¿appeared, each with a unique power to control a classical element. Since then, they have protected the world from the Phantoms. At the death of one Effigy, another is chosen, pulled from her normal life into the never-ending battle. When Maia unexpectedly becomes the next Fire Effigy, she resists her new calling. A quiet girl with few friends and almost no family, she was much happier to admire the Effigies from afar. Never did she imagine having to master her ability to control fire, to protect innocent citizens from the Phantoms, or to try bringing together the other three Effigies. But with the arrival of the mysterious Saul¿a man who seems to be able to control the Phantoms using the same cosmic power previously only granted to four girls at a time¿Maia and the other Effigies must learn to work together in a world where their celebrity status is more important than their heroism. But the secrets Saul has, and the power he possesses, might be more than even they can handle¿ Features Summary Four girls with the power to control the elements must come together to save the world from a terrible evil in this “series opener [that] has it all” (Kirkus Reviews)... This is an original 470 year old hand coloured print from the first edition of Conrad Gessner's bird book published at Zurich by Christoffel Froschower in 1557. Gessner's bird book was part of a four volume set known as the Historiae Animalium or "Histories of Animals" appearing from 1551-1558. It was an encyclopedic work of an inventory of Renaissance zoology. Conrad Gessner (1516-1565) was a Swiss naturalist and bibliographer. It is the first modern zoological work that attempts to describe all known animals, and the first bibliography of natural history writings. Historiae Animalium appeared in four volumes (quadrupeds, birds, fishes) from 1551-1558. Volume 1 was an illustrated work on live-bearing four-footed animals, Volume 2 on egg-laying quadrupeds, Volume three on birds and Volume four on fish and other aquatic animals. A condensed popular version translated into German and known as Gessner's Thierbuch or "animal book" was published in Zurich in 1563. Gessner was a protestant and his work was added to the Roman Catholic Church's list of prohibited books soon after publication. Pope Paul IV strongly believed that the religious convictions of an author contaminated all his writings. Though it is a large work Gessner sought to distinguish facts from myth, his encyclopedic work also included mythical creatures and imaginary beasts, intermixed with the strange newly discovered animals from the East Indies, those of the far north and animals brought back from the New World. Gessner made many of the illustrations for this work himself but acknowledges that he also sought the help of other artists, one being Lucas Schan from Strasbourg. The layout of the work is in the traditional style of the emblem book where images are accompanied by explanatory text and the names of animals are given in different languages. Gessner was ennobled in 1564 and in many later sources he is referred to as Conrad Von Gessner. He did not live long as a nobleman though as he died from the plague scarcely a year later. Patrons of the period had the option of purchasing either uncoloured copies for 2 Guilders or coloured copies for 3 Guilders. If the order was for a coloured copy the book was then sent to specialist shops for this purpose. This leaf is from an incomplete coloured copy. The leaf is in great condition for it's age with some light age yellowing on the margins, two marginal worm holes and some slight colour show through on the verso.

This item is sold brand new. It is ordered on demand from our supplier and is usually dispatched within 7 - 15 working days As World War II wound down and it became increasingly clear that the Allies would emerge victorious, Albert Einstein invited three close friends--all titans of contemporary science and philosophy--to his home at 112 Mercer Street in Princeton, New Jersey, to discuss what they loved best--science and philosophy. His guests were the legendary philosopher and pacifist, Bertrand Russell; the boy wonder of quantum physics, Wolfgang Pauli; and the brilliant logician, Kurt Godel. Their casual meetings took place far from the horrific battlefields of the war and the (then) secret lair of experimental atomic physicists in Los Alamos, New Mexico. Using these historic meetings as his launching pad, Feldman sketches the lives and contributions of the four friends, colleagues, and rivals--especially Einstein, innately self-confident but frustrated in his attempt to come up with a unified theory, and the aristocratic but self-doubting Lord Russell. Masterfully researched, this book accessibly illuminates the feelings of these notable men about the world of science that was then beginning to pass them by, and about the dawning atomic age that terrified them all. Features Summary From the acclaimed author of The Nobel Prize comes this fascinating portrait of four of the greatest minds in the history of science and the impossible turning point they... The world of Garn once boasted five great kingdoms, until the King of Ithrace was defeated and every member of his family executed by Lodavico, the ruthless King of Sandura, a man with ambitions to rule the world. Ithrace's ruling family were the legendary Firemanes, and represented a great danger to the other kings. Now four great kingdoms remain, on the brink of war. But rumour has it that the newborn son of the last king of Ithrace survived, carried off during battle and sequestered by the Quelli Nacosti, a secret society whose members are trained to infiltrate and spy upon the rich and powerful throughout Garn. Terrified that this may be true, and that the child will grow to maturity with bloody revenge in his heart, the four kings have placed a huge bounty on the child's head. In the small village of Oncon, Declan is apprenticed to a master blacksmith, learning the secrets of producing the mythical king's steel. Oncon is situated in the Covenant, a neutral region lying between two warring kingdoms. Since the Covenant was declared, the region has existed in peace, until violence explodes as slavers descend upon the village to capture young men to press as soldiers for Sandura. Declan must escape, to take his priceless knowledge to Baron Daylon Dumarch, ruler of Marquensas, perhaps the only man who can defeat Lodavico of Sandura, who has now allied himself with the fanatical Church of the One, which is marching across the continent, imposing its extreme form of religion upon the population and burning unbelievers as they go. Meanwhile, on the island of Coaltachin, the secret domain of the Quelli Nacosti, three friends are being schooled in the deadly arts of espionage and assassination: Donte, son of one of the most powerful masters of the order; Hava, a serious girl with fighting abilities that can set any opponent on their back; and Hatu, a strange, conflicted lad in whom fury and calm war constantly, whose hair is a bright and fiery shade of red...
