This item is sold brand new. It is ordered on demand from our supplier and is usually dispatched within 7 - 12 working days Dylan Thomas's letters bring the fascinating and tempestuous poet and his times to life in a way that no biography can.The letters begin in the poet's schooldays and end just before his death in New York at the age of 39. In between, he loved, wrote, drank, begged and borrowed his way through a flamboyant life. He was an enthusiastic critic of other writers' work and the letters are full of his thoughts on the work of his contemporaries, from T.S. Eliot and W.H. Auden to Stephen Spender and Cecil Day-Lewis.A lifetime of letters tell a remarkable story, each taking the reader a little further along the path of the poet's self-destruction, but written with such verve and lyricism that somehow the reader's sympathies never quite abandon him. About the product Number 206 of an edition limited to 510 copies, a facsimile reprint of the 1825 printing by W. Bridekirk. 8vo; original brown rexine gilt; pp. (vi) + 24. Regular browning throughout. Very good condition. (SABIB 4, p. 317 [1st and 2nd printings])"It is interesting, though not surprising, to find that in 1824, the year when, in spite of all the efforts of Pringle and Greig, Lord Charles Somerset succeeded in suppressing the free press in Cape Town, an attempt was made, sponsored by the same circle of independent-minded citizens, to found a South African Literary Society. Sixty-one citizens of distinction became members, and Thomas Pringle was appointed temporary secretary. It was essential to have the approval of the Governor, however, so Somerset was respectfully requested to become Patron of the Society. Ever suspicious of anything inaugurated by the'rebel'Pringle, Somerset began by refusing that honour, and proceeded to forbid the establishment of the Society, on the grounds that it'might have a tendency to produce political discussion'. The very rare contemporary documents dealing with this episode are now re-published after the lapse of 140 years. They are of great historical interest, particularly for the contrast they reveal between the alert-minded members who sought to pursue cultural activities, and the despotic and ultra-conservative Governor." Papers of the South African Literary Society, 1824 (Thomas (secretary) Pringle)

Condition: Good. Manderin, 1990 - China - 152 pp.   Maugham spent the winter months of 1919 travelling fifteen hundred miles up the Yangtze river. Always more interested in people than places, he noted down acute and finely crafted sketches of those he met on countless scraps of paper. In the resulting collection we encounter Western missionaries, army officers and company managers who are culturally out of their depth in the immensity of the Chinese civilisation. Maugham keenly observes, and gently ridicules, their dogged and oblivious persistence with the life they know. Review: "Masterly...carefully wrought prose sketches...The magical, mysterious East is richly portrayed" - Los Angeles Times About the author   (2010) Writer William Somerset Maugham was born in Paris on January 25, 1874. He attended St. Thomas's Medical School in London. A prolific writer, Maugham produced novels, short stories, plays, and an autobiographical novel, "Of Human Bondage." Although he remains popular for his novels and short stories, when he was alive his plays, now dated, were also popular, and in 1908 four of his plays ran simultaneously. Maugham died in Nice, France, on December 16, 1965. (This title is available on demand: expected date of dispatch will be 4-7 working days once ordered) 'Damn, all my cheating secrets revealed. In book form' Stephen Fry Which philosopher had the maddest hairstyle? Which novelist drank 50 cups of black coffee every day? What on earth did Simone de Beauvoir see in Jean-Paul Sartre? How to Sound Cultured offers a wry and yet profoundly useful look inside the mirrored palaces of high culture. Covering such inscrutable characters as Heidegger, Montaigne, Kahlo and Levi-Strauss (apparently not just a designer of jeans), inscrutable polymaths Thomas W. Hodgkinson and Hubert van den Bergh - the author of the acclaimed How to Sound Clever - have done the hard work of sorting the cultural wheat from the chaff. Read this book and you'll never again mistake Rimbaud for Rambo or Georg Lukacs for George Lucas, you'll know precisely when to drop Foucault's name into a conversation and how to pronounce 'Borgesian', and you'll learn many more essential pointers for the intellectual life.
