Book and wrapper in very good condition,   >>>   About four months after the retreat from Dunkirk, Detective-Sergeant George Ormerod in London becomes very deeply involved with the rape-murder of a young girl he knew (""I was livid, plain bloody angry, that this young girl's life should be snuffed out by some animal who couldn't control himself""). The rapist-killer is now a soldier, hiding in France, and coincidentally the British Army has just decided that an expendable agent should be sent into Normandy to assist a young Frenchwoman who has orders from the British to set up a series of underground Resistance centers throughout Normandy. So when Ormerod explains his vendetta to a British general, the general decides that Ormerod is the perfect expendable man to send along with the Frenchwoman and protect her. The two, who are codenamed Dodo and Dove, are unloaded by sub onto a small French island in the channel, where they become involved in their first Resistance murder--two German soldiers. Soon they are passengers to the mainland on a German ferry, and then they set off through Normandy with a little mongrel named Formidable. Dodo and Dove fall halfway in love as they set up cells and perform acts of sabotage and slowly work their way through Normandy towards Paris.... Leslie Thomas has a gentle, amusing way with his small-minded but persistent detective hero who must finally go home to his wife, making this a familiar but charming slice of intrigue.  * Crime * Detection *  ·         *N.B.*   If you buy more than one book from me on the same day you only pay R 6 extra postage for each of the additional books - See what else I have to offer, it might just be worth your while.

Crocker in Braddock's March, his impeccably researched account of an important but largely forgotten chapter in American history...It all adds up to a stirring tale."--Washington Times In 1755, Major General Edward Braddock was sent by Great Britain on a mission to drive France from the New World. Accompanied by the largest expeditionary force ever sent to North America, Braddock planned to seize Fort Duquesne and then march north to Canada. Braddock was joined on the expedition by George Washington and others who would later play roles in the future revolution, including Horatio Gates, Thomas Gage, and Charles Lee; among those driving the wagons were Daniel Boone and Daniel Morgan. Less than a day's march from Fort Duquesne, Braddock's exhausted column was annihilated by a combined French and Indian force. Braddock himself fell mortally wounded, while George Washington miraculously escaped harm. With this battle, North America was drawn into a global war between Britain and France. In Braddock's March: How the Man Sent to Seize a Continent Changed American History, Thomas E. Crocker uses a wealth of sources to tell the story of one of the most important events in the American colonial period. Dead ends are a reality for clerks at the Dead Letter Office. Still she dreams of something more--a bit of intrigue, a taste of romance, or at least a touch less loneliness. It becomes her mission to place this lost letter into the hands of its intended recipient. Thomas left his former life with no intention of ending up in Azure Springs, Iowa. She wants to find the rightful owner of the letter and yet she finds herself caring--perhaps too much--for the one who wrote it. National Bestseller and Honorable Mention Award Winner in the Outdoor Literature category of the 2017 National Outdoor Book Awards (NOBA) A beautiful book about family and finding a way to achieve more than you ever thought possible. Brad Meltzer, New York Times bestselling author Erik Weihenmayer is the first and only blind person to summit Mount Everest, the highest point on Earth. Descending carefully, he and his team picked their way across deep crevasses and through the deadly Khumbu Icefall; when the mountain was finally behind him, Erik knew he was going to live. His expedition leader slapped him on the back and said something that would affect the course of Eriks life: Dont make Everest the greatest thing you ever do. No Barriers is Eriks response to that challenge. It is the moving story of his journey since descending Mount Everest: from leading expeditions around the world with blind Tibetan teenagers to helping injured soldiers climb their way home from war, from adopting a son from Nepal to facing the most terrifying reach of his life: to solo kayak the thunderous whitewater of the Grand Canyon. Along the course of Eriks journey, he meets other trailblazersadventurers, scientists, artists, and activistswho, despite trauma, hardship, and loss, have broken through barriers of their own. These pioneers show Erik surprising ways forward that surpass logic and defy traditional thinking. Like the rapids of the Grand Canyon, created by inexorable forces far beneath the surface, No Barriers is a dive into the heart and mind at the core of the turbulent human experience. It is an exploration of the light that burns in all of us, the obstacles that threaten to extinguish that light, and the treacherous ascent towards growth and rebirth. (This title is available on demand: expected date of dispatch will be 7-10 working days once ordered) A heartaching portrayal of a woman faced by an impossible choice in the pursuit of happiness, Thomas Hardy's "Tess of the D'Urbervilles" is edited with notes by Tim Dolin and an introduction by Margaret R. Higonnet in "Penguin Classics". When Tess Durbeyfield is driven by family poverty to claim kinship with the wealthy D'Urbervilles and seek a portion of their family fortune, meeting her 'cousin' Alec proves to be her downfall. A very different man, Angel Clare, seems to offer her love and salvation, but Tess must choose whether to reveal her past or remain silent in the hope of a peaceful future. With its sensitive depiction of the wronged Tess and powerful criticism of social convention, "Tess of the D'Urbervilles", subtitled "A Pure Woman", is one of the most moving and poetic of Hardy's novels. Based on the three-volume first edition that shocked readers when first published in 1891, this edition includes as appendices: Hardy's Prefaces, the "Landscapes of Tess", episodes originally censored from the Graphic periodical version and a selection of the Graphic illustrations. Thomas Hardy (1840-1928), born Higher Brockhampton, near Dorchester, originally trained as an architect before earning his living as a writer. Though he saw himself primarily as a poet, Hardy was the author of some of the late eighteenth century's major novels: "The Mayor of Casterbridge" (1886), "Tess of the D'Urbervilles" (1891), "Far from the Madding Crowd" (1874), and "Jude the Obscure" (1895). Amidst the controversy caused by "Jude the Obscure", he turned to the poetry he had been writing all his life. In the next thirty years he published over nine hundred poems and his epic drama in verse, "The Dynasts". If you enjoyed "Tess of the D'Urbervilles", you might like Daniel Defoe's "Moll Flanders", also available in "Penguin Classics". "The greatest tragic writer among the English novelists". I suspect that Thomas Pynchon and Hunter S. Thompson would love this book." -Salman Rushdie From legendary actor and activist Sean Penn comes a scorching, darkly funny novel about Bob Honey-a modern American man, entrepreneur, and part-time assassin. Bob Honey has a hard time connecting with other people, especially since his divorce. He's tired of being marketed to every moment, sick of a world where even an orgasm isn't real until it is turned into a tweet. A paragon of old-fashioned American entrepreneurship, Bob sells septic tanks to Jehovah's Witnesses and arranges pyrotechnic displays for foreign dictators. He's also a contract killer for an off-the-books program run by a branch of US intelligence that targets the elderly, the infirm, and others who drain this consumption-driven society of its resources. When a nosy journalist starts asking questions, Bob can't decide if it's a chance to form some sort of new friendship or the beginning of the end for him. With treason on everyone's lips, terrorism in everyone's sights, and American political life sinking to ever-lower standards, Bob decides it's time to make a change-if he doesn't get killed by his mysterious controllers or exposed in the rapacious media first. A thunderbolt of provocative words and startling images, Bob Honey Who Just Do Stuff marks the fiction debut of one of America's most acclaimed artists. Features Summary Synopsis coming soon....... About the product 8vo; original blue cloth, lettered in gilt on spine, with gilt publisher's monogram to upper cover; no dustwrapper; pp. xiii + (i) + 248, incl. index; plates; some illustrations in text. Very good condition."The arrival at the Cape of Good Hope, early in 1834, of Sir John Herschel and Thomas Maclear initiated for them a period of intense scientific endeavour. Herschel was graced by a name which, from the astronomical discoveries of his father, Sir William Herschel, was already a household word. The younger Herschel was arguably the most famous scientist ever to spend a significant portion of his life in the beneficial clime of the Cape. Much has been written about Herschel's scientific work at the Cape. The picture is far from complete, however.. This gives some justification for the publication of what is in fact the majority of the letters written by Herschel during his residence at the Cape. For Maclear the situation is quite the reverse. Completely unknown on his arrival at the Cape, he had steadily to build up fame on the foundations of industry and public service. By the time of his death in 1879 his repute was such that his passing moved even the Cape Parliament to a salutation.. Yet the nature of the man is hardly known in the country of his adoption, and his contributions are largely forgotten in his chosen profession. Although a full-scale biography is required to do justice to Maclear, the diaries and letters reproduced here will go some way towards establishing his character." Maclear&Herschel.
