Unlike many other movie licenses both film and game have been worked on simultaneously, with the game expanding on the movie¿¿¿s story rather than just retelling it. The game is being developed by Avalanche Softwre, who did the Tak series and Disney¿¿¿s own Chicken Little, which was one of the better (or least worst) tie-ins of recent years. Since the movie is filled with time travel paradoxes the game aims to fill in the untold stories and shockingly isn¿¿¿t a platform game ¿¿¿ at least not primarily anyway. There is plenty of action though as you fight robots and use gadgets like the disassembler, the chargeball glove, scanner, havoc gloves and levitator. Wilbur can upgrade both his gadgets and himself as he makes progress in the game, allowing you to choose whether you rely more on straight action or your wits. Further variety is added by some Super Monkey Ball style levels where you have to roll Wilbur around in a giant force field ball and some retro looking side-scrolling levels. It¿¿¿s not a game likely to appeal to anyone that hasn¿¿¿t seen the movie but with a bit of luck it won¿¿¿t be a complete rip-off for those that have and just want relive the experience at home. The aim of the game is simple enough: progress through the levels by scaring a set number of robotic children ("nerves") and collecting your standard platform currency--coins. The game itself is a movie tie-in, but not a game of the movie; the plot doesn't follow the film's at all, instead pursuing Mike and Sulley's training at the Monsters, Inc. Scare Academy. Each level is presented more as a puzzle rather than a story progression; clips from the movie are included in between levels, but they don't really bear any relevance to the action at your fingertips. The gameplay uses elements from Crash Bandicoot, Banjo Kazooie and Spyro the Dragon: jump, spin, bounce--all your standard platform moves are here. However, this isn't a bad thing, as kids will love it. Part II is developed by HumanHead games, makers of Rune, and they have stolen a march on the original by having part of the original movie describing the legend of Coffin Rock as their opening cutscene. This is an immediate improvement on the original. The Nocturne engine returns with its default-subtitled Widescreen cutscenes. They are better executed in Rune, but then that game didn't have any kind of template to adhere to. You play Lazurus, a man who starts off with a head wound and shaky memory. Following the little girl as instructed leads to the revelation of your mission, and then you get off into the woods proper to set about your search. The default controls are more intuitive and the flick screen action avoids hitting you with crazy camera angles at the start, and overall feels more controllable than Rustin Parr--when the view changes the assumption of reversed keys is correct on most occasions. The atmosphere setting continues in the forest with high-quality sound effects permeating the background as you run, search and occasionally shoot your way through to completing your task. Resident Evil fans who enjoyed Rustin Parr should have no problems getting into this one.
