It is ordered on demand from our supplier and is usually dispatched within 8 - 15 working days Robbie Robertson's singular contributions to popular music have made him one of the most beloved songwriters and guitarists of his time. With songs like `The Weight', `The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down' and `Up on Cripple Creek', he and his partners in the Band fashioned a music that has endured for decades, influencing countless musicians. In this captivating memoir, written over five years of reflection, Robbie employs his unique storyteller's voice to weave together the journey that led him to some of the most pivotal events in music history. He recounts the adventures of his half-Jewish, half-Mohawk upbringing on the Six Nations Indian Reserve and on the gritty streets of Toronto; his odyssey at sixteen to the Mississippi Delta, the fountainhead of American music; the wild, early years on the road with rockabilly legend Ronnie Hawkins and the Hawks; his unexpected ties to the Cosa Nostra underworld; the gripping trial-by-fire of 'going electric' with Bob Dylan on his 1966 world tour and their ensuing celebrated collaborations; the formation of the Band and the forging of their unique sound, culminating with history's most famous farewell concert, brought to life for all time in Martin Scorsese's great movie The Last Waltz. This is the story of a time and place - the moment when rock 'n' roll became life, when legends like Buddy Holly and Bo Diddley crisscrossed the circuit of clubs and roadhouses from Texas to Toronto, when the Beatles, Hendrix, the Stones and Warhol moved through the same streets and hotel rooms. It's the story of exciting change as the world tumbled through the '60s and early '70s and a generation came of age, built on music, love and freedom. Above all, it's the moving story of the profound friendship among five young men who together created a new kind of popular music. Testimony is Robbie Robertson's story, lyrical and true, as only he could tell it. An ideology founded by Stephen Bantu Biko, which wished to relay the unspoken strength and spirit of the African people. It was seen to be a way of thought developed for the African people to reclaim confidence within their skin tone. As the trail commenced in the year 1974, little was known about the ideology's founder - Steve Biko, aside from his colleagues and followers of the movement, as his whereabouts and communication had been limited as the Apartheid government had ordered a ban on Biko; thereby restricting his movements and communication with individuals. When Steve entered the Pretoria courtroom in Pretoria as a star witness to deliver his testimony on Black Consciousness, in the three-month trial; those who had heard of the myth of the man named Biko, got to witness him in court. This, gave traction and new-found understanding to the teachings of Black Consciousness. This book focuses solely on his testimony, as said in his words. The spoken words that ignited the momentum of resistance that could not be stopped. Excerpt from Document Showing the Testimony Given Before the Judge of the Fifth Judicial Circuit of the State of Missouri, on the Trial of Joseph Smith, Jr., And Others, for High Treason, and Other Crimes Against That State: February 15, 1841 As regards the affair at 'de Witt, I know little personally; but I heard Mr. S. Rigdon say they had gone down to De Witt, where it was said a mob had collected to wage war upon the Mormons residing in Carroll county; and that Joseph Smith, jr., with his friends, went down to De Witt to give aid and help to, his brethren. The company, as I presume, were armed. They returned armed. Hiram Sm'nh and George W. Robinson were in the company. 'amasa Lyman went to seewhat was going on. He heard these persons say they were in Hinkle's camp (at De Witt) several days. When the Mormons returned from De Witt, it/was rumored that a mob was col leeting in Daviess county. Joseph Smith, ir., the Sunday, before the late disturbances in'daviess, at a church meeting, gave notice that he wished the whole county collected on the next day (monday) at Far West. He declared (on Sunday or Monday - rl don't recollect which) that all who did not take up arms in defence of the Mormons of Daviess. Should be consid ered as tories, and should take their exit from the country. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. (This title is available on demand: expected date of dispatch will be 4-7 working days once ordered) 'My name is Raphael Ignatius Phoenix and I am a hundred years old - or will be in ten days' time, in the early hours of January 1st, 2000, when I kill myself...' Raphael Ignatius Phoenix has had enough. Born at the beginning of the 20th century, he is determined to take his own life as the old millennium ends and the new one begins. But before he ends it all, he wants to get his affairs in order and put the record straight. That includes making sense of his own long life - a life that spanned the century. He decides to write it all down and, eschewing the more usual method of pen and paper, begins to record his story on the walls of the isolated castle that is his final home. Beginning with a fateful first adventure with Emily, the childhood friend who would become his constant companion, Raphael remembers the multitude of experiences, the myriad encounters and, of course, the ten murders he committed along the way...And so begins one man's wholly unorthodox account of the twentieth century - or certainly his own riotous, often outrageous, somewhat unreliable and undoubtedly singular interpretation of it. This book celebrates the endurance of the Native American Church, which now has some 80 chapters throughout the country. Prayer meetings, the sacramental use of peyote, and the significance of various practices and objects are described. Eloquent testimony of Church members from different tribes demonstrates that peyote is not used to obtain "visions" but to heal the body and spirit and to teach righteousness. "Two very important books have appeared in 1996: 'Reuben Snake: Your Humble Serpent' and 'One Nation Under God: The Triumph of the Native America Church.' I say they're important because they are designed for the U.S. Government and the American people as an audience. The books are not teaching Indigenous people about peyote; they're documents to voice the concerns of indigenous Nations, to protect those of us who participate in the spirituality of peyote -- as members of the Native American Church or as individuals". (The Native American Press, Ojibwe News)" "One Nation Under God is an essential and informative contribution to Native American studies reading lists". (The Midwest Book Review)" Reuben Snake's personal testimony on behalf of the sacred peyote is seconded and supported by the chapter 'Voices of the Native American Church, ' which presents a persuasive collection of short, heartfelt testimonials... about the life-affirming teachings of love and respect that are at the heart of the peyote way". Why do people want to kill themselves? Despite the prevalence of suicide in the developed world, it's a question most of us fail to ask. On hearing news of a suicide we are devastated, but overwhelmingly we feel disbelief. In A Very Human Ending, research psychologist Jesse Bering lifts the lid on this taboo subject, examining the suicidal mindset from the inside out to reveal the subtle tricks the mind can play when we're easy emotional prey. In raising challenging questions Bering tests our contradictory superstitions about the act itself. Combining cutting-edge research with investigative journalism and first-person testimony, Bering also addresses the history of suicide and its evolutionary inheritance to offer a personal, accessible, yet scientifically sound examination of why we are the only species on earth that deliberately ends its own life. It is ordered on demand from our supplier and is usually dispatched within 6 - 13 working days How America's bomber boys and girls in England won their war, and how their English allies responded to it. The US 8th Air Force came of age in the England of 1944. With a fresh commander, it was ready to demonstrate its true power: from Big Week in February, targeting German aircraft production plants, to bringing the Luftwaffe to battle over Berlin, the combined USAAF-RAF round-the clock campaign of bottling up the German army in Normandy and the strategically vital oil offensive of the following autumn and winter. Day after day, the American bomber boys watched their comrades burn to death in blazing bombers, be thrown out of exploding aircraft without parachutes and sink with their crippled aircraft in the freezing North Sea. But by the following spring they had destroyed the Nazi fighter arm and seen Germany broken in two. In this comprehensive history, Kevin Wilson has allowed the youngsters of the 8th to tell their stories of blood and heroism in their own words. At the same time, he has opened up the lives of the Women's Army Corps and Red Cross girls who served in England with them and feared for the men in the skies, and he hasn't flinched from recounting the devastation of bombing or the testimony of shocked German civilians. Wilson has interviewed American veterans and trawled archives in both the United States and Britain to complete this final volume of his air-war series, adding to his critically acclaimed trilogy about the RAF and Commonwealth air forces' bomber offensive. Drawing on first-hand accounts from diaries, letters and his personal recordings, the author has brought to life the ebullient Americans' interaction with their British counterparts and the civilians who lived near the air bases, unveiling stories of humanity and heartbreak. Thanks to America's bomber boys and girls, life in Britain would never be the same again. (This title is available on demand: expected date of dispatch will be 4-7 working days once ordered) 'The central miracle asserted by Christians is the Incarnation. They say that God became Man. Every other miracle prepares the way for this, or results from this.' This is the key statement of 'Miracles', in which C. S. Lewis shows that a Christian must not only accept but rejoice in miracles as a testimony of the unique personal involvement of God in his creation. Using his characteristic lucidity and wit to develop his argument, Lewis challenges the rationalists, agnostics and deists on their own grounds and provides a poetic and joyous affirmation that miracles really do occur in our everyday lives. For the next two days, people around the world celebrated. But the "slow outbreak of peace" that gradually dawned across the world in the summer of 1945 was fraught with difficulties and violence. Beginning with the signing of the German surrender to the Western Allies in Reims on 7 May, The Summer of '45 is a 'people's history' which gathers voices from all levels of society and from all corners of the globe to explore four months that would dictate the order of the world for decades to come. Quoting from generals, world statesmen, infantrymen, prisoners of war, journalists, civilians and neutral onlookers, this book presents the memories of the men and women who danced alongside Princesses Elizabeth and Margaret outside Buckingham Palace on the first night of peace; the reactions of the vanquished and those faced with rebuilding a shattered Europe; the often overlooked story of the 'forgotten army' still battling against the Japanese in the East; the election of Clement Attlee's reforming Labour government; the beginnings of what would become the Iron Curtain; and testimony from the first victims of nuclear warfare in Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Combining archive sources and original interviews with living witnesses, The Summer of '45 reveals the lingering trauma of the war and the new challenges brought by peacetime. "A beacon of hope in a dark world." (Cathy Rentzenbrink, The Pool). What matters most in life? How do you build a happy life when terrible things happen? One night last winter, Antoine Leiris was at home looking after his son while his wife, Helene, was at a concert with friends. Suddenly he started receiving text messages asking if he was ok. Turning on the TV, Antoine watched the terrorist attacks in Paris unfolding around him and tried to call Helene. She didn't answer. That night Helene was killed, along with 88 other people, at the Bataclan Theatre. Three days later, Antoine wrote an open letter to his wife's killers on Facebook. He refused to be cowed or to let his 17-month-old son's life be defined by their acts. 'For as long as he lives, this little boy will insult you with his happiness and freedom,' he wrote. Instantly, that short post caught fire and was shared thousands of times around the world. You Will Not Have My Hate is an extraordinary and heartbreaking memoir about how Antoine, and his baby son Melvil, endured after Helene's murder. With courage, moral acuity, and absolute emotional honesty, he finds a way to answer the question, how can I go on? This is the rare and unforgettable testimony of a survivor, and a universal message of hope and resilience. This book is a guiding star for us all in perilous times. David Philip, 1999, 1st edition. As new, unmarked. 24x15cm, 219 pp "It is the twenty-second year of Nelson Mandela's imprisonment and a country is gripped with civil unrest. A black policeman is beaten to death and his body burned during a riot. Twenty-five people are convicted of his murder; fourteen are sentenced to death. A small town is besieged by their legal trial, and one of the lawyers is brutally assassinated. This is the story of Upington Twenty-five men and women, from teenage boys to an elderly couple are all accused of the same crime: acting with a common purpose. Durbach and the other members of the legal team took the case after the death sentences had been handed down and had only a matter of weeks to sort through thousands of court papers, to get to know each of the defendants, referred to only by numbers in all court documents, and mount a proper appeal. Durbach recounts the specifics of the case, recreating trial testimony and judicial opinions, and giving the book the air of a charged courtroom drama. We meet each of the accused, hear their stories and follow the Herculean effort by this group of lawyers to save the lives of the accused-both innocent and guilty. The details surrounding the case lead us to question our own prejudices and assumptions: the fact that al twenty-five were involved in the riot that led to the death of the policeman, does that make all twenty-five guilty? Those some of the accused confessed, are the others guilty by association and proximity?.,." - Publisher's description.

In May 1941 Lena Mukhina was an ordinary teenage girl, living in Leningrad, worrying about her homework and whether Vova, the boy she liked, liked her. Like a good Soviet schoolgirl, she was also diligently learning German, the language of Russia's Nazi ally. And she was keeping a diary, in which she recorded her hopes and dreams. Then, on 22 June 1941, Hitler broke his pact with Stalin and declared war on the Soviet Union. All too soon, Leningrad was besieged and life became a living hell. Lena and her family fought to stay alive; their city was starving and its citizens were dying in their hundreds of thousands. From day to dreadful day, Lena records her experiences: the desperate hunt for food, the bitter cold of the Russian winter, the cruel deaths of those she loved. The Diary of Lena Mukhina is a truly remarkable account of this most terrible era in modern history. It offers readers the vivid first-hand testimony of a courageous young woman struggling simply to survive. Format:Paperback

Dancing to a different rhythm - Zarina Maharaj - Zebra - 2006 - Papreback in good, clean and tight condition. Despite many volumes being written about South Africans involved in the struggle for democracy, few are first-hand accounts by the women who stood side by side with their men on the front lines. This book is a woman’s perspective on what life was like in the struggle as she simultaneously raised a family and pursued a career, while striving to retain an identity of her own. Zarina Maharaj’s story takes us from her childhood in Johannesburg, which set the tone for the rest of her unconventional life, to self-imposed exile in London, Mozambique and Zambia. It tells of her struggle to raise her children alone while her husband led a top-secret underground operation in South Africa, her concerns for his safety, her efforts to have him freed after his capture by Special Branch police, and her approach to the controversies that continue to surround her family today. Dancing to a Different Rhythm is not only an eyewitness account of life with the ANC-in-exile, but a bittersweet love story set against almost insurmountable odds, and a testimony to the fact that in liberation, freedom can remain as elusive as ever. Above all, it is the story of a woman who, despite numerous sacrifices and continuing adversity, always dances to a rhythm of her own.

Theirs is a story of shrewd risk-takers perpetrating calculated violence, fit for the times. For Boers and Africans alike, good enterprises were measured in cattle, and the subjects of this story, the Kgatla under Pilane and his two successors, Kgamanyane and Linchwe, were uncommonly good. Their accretion over three generations of stock and the territory to graze them amidst stronger countervailing forces is testimony to their intellectual prowess, discipline, daring, and close awareness of the region¿s turbulent environment. In addition to the rise of the Kgatla, the account offers the first detailed narrative of early-to-late western Transvaal history involving resident Boer and African communities, along with missionary activity, the relations between the South African Republic and its western border, and the complex movement of African groups into and out of the western Transvaal between 1860 and 1900. It provides a revisionist perspective of Paul Kruger, detailing his land speculation, slave raiding, collaborative dealings with Africans, and his political and religious struggles within the Boer community of Rustenburg District. And it recasts relations between Africans in the Transvaal and its borders with the South African Republican government as characterized more by diplomatic maneuvering than by confrontation. Psychology and law are disciplines and professions that seem to be, at first glance, quite distinct and separate - but in reality their congruences are many and varied - psychologists frequently appear in court as expert witnesses; and they often actively research topics that are directly related to law and legal practice. Similarly, lawyers and other legal professional often face questions in their professional practice that are inherently psychological in nature. This text introduces the reader to some of the intersections of psychology and law. Each chapter includes learning objectives, exercises and a detailed reference section. Topics addressed in psychology and law include: psychological assessment in forensic settings; crime and policing; child custody assessment; the detection of deception and truthfulness; eyewitness testimony and identification; the role and treatment of child witnesses in legal proceedings; assessing dangerousness and the risk of violence; the psychologist as expert witness; investigative psychology and psychological profiling; psychology and human rights; insanity and diminished capacity defences. It is ordered on demand from our supplier and is usually dispatched within 20 - 25 working days When Arthur Conan Doyle was a lonely 7-year-old schoolboy at pre-prep Newington Academy in Edinburgh, a French emigre named Eugene Chantrelle was engaged there to teach Modern Languages. A few years later, Chantrelle would be hanged for the particularly grisly murder of his wife, marking the beginning of Conan Doyle's own association with some of the bloodiest crimes of the Victorian and Edwardian eras. This early link between actual crime and the greatest detective story writer of all time is one of many. Conan Doyle would also go on to play a leading role in the notorious case of the young Anglo-Indian lawyer George Edalji, convicted and imprisoned as the `mad ripper' who supposedly prowled the fields around his Staffordshire home by night looking for animals to mutilate; and the equally chilling story of Oscar Slater and his alleged murder of an elderly spinster as she sat in her Glasgow home one winter's night in 1908, a crime with a spectacular denouement 18 years later. Using freshly available evidence and eyewitness testimony, Christopher Sandford follows these links and draws out the connections between Conan Doyle's literary output and factual criminality, a pattern that will enthral and surprise the legions of Sherlock Holmes fans. In a sense, Conan Doyle wanted to be Sherlock - to be a man who could bring order and justice to a terrible world. Alister Hardy was the Head of the Department of Zoology and Comparative Anatomy in Oxford University from 1946 to 1961 and arguably the best known marine biologist in the world. Yet he was a man who lived an extraordinary double life. At one level, as a zoologist and steadfast Darwinian he was an eminent representative of the scientific revolution that transformed European thought following the Enlightenment. At another deeper level - which for much of the time he felt it necessary to conceal from his colleagues and even his own children - the course of Hardy's life was determined by his intense religious commitment. His entire scientific career was dramatically shaped by his conviction that he was fulfilling a religious vocation he had taken up when he was a young man of eighteen. His integrity would not permit him to discard either science or religion, and the outcome was the creation of a revolutionary approach to the resolution of that celebrated conflict. In this remarkable biography, David Hay shows how Hardy struggled towards, and successfully created, his novel response to the inevitable tensions between the scientific and religious dimensions of his life. As the founder of the Religious Experience Research Unit, he created a huge bank of personal testimony, drawn from the answers of ordinary people to the question posed above. These thoughts of a highly gifted scientist on the nature and importance of the spiritual dimension of human experience are of the greatest relevance to current debates about the validity of religion in a secular age. His talent emerged early in his life and at 16 he won first prize in an art competition at the local agricultural show. Although he did teach for a while, art remained his driving passion. Pemba's beginnings as a painter occurred at a time and place where it was almost impossible for a young black man to succeed as an artist. Rural and township life were his main sources of inspiration and his works became accurate reflections of the social and political conditions of his people. In this title Sarah Hudleston has not attempted academicism, but has instead, documented George Pemba's life in a style that reflects deeply her passion for an artist who influenced and inspired her own life. It is a testimony to a great man and a rich visual record of his inspired work.

Written in conversation with Vatican expert and La Stampa journalist Andrea Tornielli, The Name of God is Mercy is directed at everyone, inside or outside of the Catholic Church, seeking meaning in life, a road to peace and reconciliation, or the healing of physical or spiritual wounds. Just how significant a part did the white hunter-traders settled at Port Natal play in their royal patron's downfall? Why were Shaka's relations with the British Cape Colony key to his survival? And why did the powerful army he had created acquiesce so tamely in the usurpation of the throne by Dingane, his half-brother and assassin? In his search for answers Laband turns to the Zulu voice heard through recorded oral testimony and praise-poems, and to the written accounts and reminiscences of the Port Natal trader-hunters and the despatches of Cape officials. In the course of probing and assessing this evidence the author vividly brings the early Zulu kingdom and its inhabitants to life. He throws light on this elusive character of and his own unpredictable intentions, while illuminating the fears and ambitions of those attempting to prosper and survive in his hazardous kingdom: a kingdom that nevertheless endured in all its essential characteristics, particularly militarily, until its destruction fifty one years later in 1879 by the British; and whose fate, legend has it, Shaka predicted with his dying breath. By what means did the Commission endeavor to understand South Africa's violent past and promote a spirit of national unity? Did the commission's acclaimed and controversial efforts help South Africans to walk the bridge from apartheid to nonracial democracy? This groundbreaking volume provides an explicit and often startling view of the Truth and reconciliation commission. In the name of understanding the commission's development, work, and findings, it features a rich variety of materials, including many selections from the TRC's archive of testimony and its Final Report that have yet to receive significant public scrutiny. These fundamental documents challenge conventional accounts of the Commission. They also shed light on how the Commission undertook a public process of history-making, attempted to deal with the past in a manner that gave voice to experiences long silenced, endeavoured to expose the violence of apartheid and the excesses of struggle, and demonstrated the political necessity of repairing a crime against humanity. For both citizen and student, this volume affords an opportunity to grapple with the difficult concepts of truth and reconciliation in South Africa and a chance to reflect on why these two simple words have challenged international preconceptions about the power and potential of African politics. Those in the know thought that this record would never be beaten. It is the ultimate British ultramarathon. The person taking on this superhuman challenge would have to be willing to push harder and suffer more than ever before. There is no Map in Hell tells the story of a man willing to do just that. In 2014, Steve Birkinshaw made an attempt at setting a new record. With a background of nearly forty years of running elite orienteering races and extreme-distance fell running over the toughest terrain, if he couldn't do it, surely no one could. But the Wainwrights challenge is in a different league: aspirants need to complete two marathons and over 5,000 metres of ascent every day for a week. With a foreword by Joss Naylor, There is no Map in Hell recounts Birkinshaw's preparation, training and mile-by-mile experience of the extraordinary and sometimes hellish demands he made of his mind and body, and the physiological aftermath of such a feat. His deep love of the fells, phenomenal strength and tenacity are awe inspiring, and testimony to athletes and onlookers alike that `in order to attain the impossible, one must attempt the absurd'. Subtitle: My Life Behind Enemy Lines with Warlords, Fanatics and Not-So-Friendly Fire Author: Aris Roussinos Publisher: Random House UK 2014 ISBN-10: 1780892187 ISBN-13: 9781780892184 Condition: Very Good Binding: Softcover Pages: 314 Dimensions: 23.3 x 15.3 x 2.5 cm +++ by Aris Roussinos +++ Aris Roussinos tells the real stories behind life in a rebel army. The hidden truth about war is how much fun it is. That's because however they begin, whatever their aims, wars are fought by young men. Some fight because they have an unshakable belief in the cause, others fight because war is all they have ever known. And there are those who fight because there's nothing better to do. They fight in burned-out buildings and shelter under thorn trees. They eat their meager rations, and starve for days cut off from supply lines. They smoke forty cigarettes a day and ride to war stoned, listening to Craig David. These are the men, and boys, who fight these wars. Their senses are sharper; they shudder every time they hear a plane pass overhead: they know it's not a video game anymore. The bombs and bullets are terrifyingly real, and the guys they're killing aren't always faceless enemies: sometimes they're friends. For the last three years, award-winning journalist Aris Roussinos embedded himself with rebel groups in the Libyan uprising, the brutal conflict in the South Sudan, and the civil war in Syria, among others. Part travelogue from the world's most dangerous hot-spots, part eyewitness testimony to recent, bloody history, this is the uncensored, unflinching account of the rebel armies and those who fill their ranks.
