Here we have on auction a REPRODUCTION new build Cuban Elm-leaf (Cuban) camo "kiko" camo cap (sewn from old stocks of Recce copy camo obtained with great effort and only available in small quantities). This kiko cap is one-size-fits-all and will easily fit someone with a hat size 57/58/59. The "kiko" camo cap was a favourite of the Portuguese and Insurgent (and other Freedom Fighters/ groups in the old Porra colonies of Angola and Mozambique) and was often encontered/ found during the SWA/ Angola bushwar period. These REPRO camo kiko caps are intended to be a comfortable everyday wear item, fold one up and keep handy in a side cargo pocket for "just-in-case"!  The single pic below shows other REPRO kikos available (on other simultanious BoB auctions) and serves as a comparison showing some of the bushwar popular camo patterns employed by the enemy (and copied by SA Special Forces/ Recces and other units eg. 32 Bn recce wing); Top -to-bottom - Libyan Rhubarb, FAPLA (Cuban) grey lizzard, East German (DDR) rice pattern/ falling rain, French llizzard (camo favoured by UNITA), Cuban (SF) elm leaf camo; Basically a handy, comfortable lekke camo cap! (I wear one almost daily and often wear it with the tail folded away until needed). Postage quotes supplied to the winning bidder and dependent on the persons location and preferred shipping/ postage method. Local shipping possible via Postnet on this item at R100 flat-rate anywhere in SA! You are welcome to combine shipping with other items offered here on BoB. Please note that Postnet parcels will only be dispatched on Weds or Fri and SAPO parcels ONLY on Sat (due to current work commitments and time restrictions to get to SAPO and the queues. Foreign bidders most welcome BUT please use BoB voucher or BoB bucks for payment! Happy bidding!!! "X-ray 007"

Here we have on auction a rarely seen available for sale current issue Mozambique Police (PRM) rice pattern camo long-sleeve shirt in good used condition AND in a X- LARGE size! This l/s shirt is approx a size X-L (fits me and I normally wear XL shirts - 44 inch chest) and is marked in the local size scale as a "size 9". The picture below shows a member of the Mozambique PRM police wearing the same rice pattern camo as is on auction here; Many Southern African nations adopted the rice pattern camo (East German/ Chinese origin and/ or copy) for use by their militaries/ police forces (Zambia and Moz still currently use this patt for police)/ para-military forces and the pattern was also extensively used by insurgents and terrorist groups throughout Southern Africa eg. ZIPRA/ ZANLA in Rhodesia, SWAPO/ PLAN in Angola/ SWA etc.  and subsequently the SA Special Forces (Recces) also made their own copy camo and psuedo uniforms in the pattern! Please see the pics for further detail and as a confirmation of the item and its condition as on auction. Please see the "INUPOL" label and size tag - which reads "size 9" (approx XL). and; These uniforms are extremely difficult to source and finding one in a X-large size is even MORE difficult! Please see my other auction currently running with matching XL size short sleeve and rice pattern PRM trousers! Please note that the 32 Battalion summer camo used as a background is not included in this auction. Postage quotes supplied at close of successful auction depending on the winning bidder and his/ her location! Paypal gladly accepted for foreign or overseas buyers! Happy bidding!!!

The climactic death-throes of Soviet Communism during the 1980's included a last-gasp attempt at strategic franchise expansion in Southern Africa. Channelled through Castro's Cuba, oil-rich Angolan armed forces (FAPLA) received billions of dollars of advanced weaponry including MiG 23 and Sukhoi fighter jets, SAM 8 missile systems and thousands of armoured vehicles. Their   intent - to eradicate the US-backed Angolan opposition (UNITA), then push southwards into South Africa's protectorate SWA/Namibia, ostensibly as liberators. 1985 saw the first large-scale mechanized offensive in Southern African history. Russian Generals planned and oversaw the offensive but without properly accounting for the tenacity of UNITA (supported by the South African Defence Forces - SADF) or the treacherous terrain typical in the rainy season. The '85 offensive floundered in the mud and FAPLA returned to their capital Luanda. The South Africans stood down, confident their 'covert' support for UNITA had demonstrated the folly of prosecuting war so far from home against Africa's military Superpower. The South Africans were mistaken. Fidel and FAPLA immediately redoubled their efforts, strengthening fifteen battalions with even more Soviet hardware while Russian and Cuban specialists oversaw troop training. As Cuban and Angola fighter pilots honed their skills over the skies of Northern Angola, David Mannall, a normal 17-year old kid completing High School, was preparing for two years of compulsory military service before beginning Tertiary education. Through a series of fateful twists he found himself leading soldiers in a number of full-scale armoured clashes including the largest and most decisive battle on African soil since World War II. This is the David and Goliath story that, due to seismic political changes in the region, has never been truthfully told. The author lifts the hatch on his story of how Charlie Squadron, comprising just twelve 90mm AFVs crewed by 36 national servicemen, as part of the elite 61 Mechanised Battalion, engaged and effectively annihilated the giant FAPLA 47th Armoured Brigade in one day - 3 October 1987. Their 90mm cannons were never designed as tank-killers but any assurances that it would never be used against heavy armour were left in the classroom during the three-month operation and never more starkly than the decisive 'Battle on The Lomba River'. The Communist-backed offensive died that day along with hundreds of opposition fighters. 47th Brigade survivors abandoned their remaining equipment, fleeing north across the Lomba, eventually joining the 59th Brigade in what became a full-scale retreat of over ten thousand soldiers to Cuito Cuanavale. The myth perpetuated by post-apartheid politicians goes something like this "The SADF force that destroyed 47th Brigade on 3 October numbered 6,000 men and that all the hard yards were run by the long suffering UNITA!" The inconvenient truth is that there were just 36 South African boys on the front-line that day, but it is also true to say they would never have achieved such a stunning victory without the support of many more. This is their story. Paperback, 192 pages First Published October 2014, Second Revised Edition May 2015
