New Sustainable Homes: Designs for Healthy Living James Grayson Trulove 2006 Synopsis: What makes a sustainable house a sustainable home? NEW SUSTAINABLE HOMES will address that question by presenting a wide range of projects where the architect and client have made a conscientious effort to incorporate sustainability into the design of the home and construction materials used in its execution. The result is a home that is less toxic to live in, is cheaper to operate, and often gives back to the environment rather than taking away. Also, and this is the most important consideration for many, it is a great looking, highly livable home that not only retains its value but has been shown to increase in value more quickly than more conventionally conceived houses because of cheaper operating expenses. These designers and their clients are not on the fringe. NEW SUSTAINABLE HOMES will show readers will learn about the many materials and techniques that make up today's sustainable house, including: 1) the use of pervious concrete on driveways that allows water to seep through to the water table below. 2) using bio/fiber panels in lieu of plywood for interior finishing 3) using organic, green roofs that improve insulation, absorb sound and manage storm?water runoff 4) solar water heating systems 5) use of high thermal performance windows 6) photovoltaic electrical systems About the Author: James Grayson Trulove is an author, publisher, and editor of books on the subjects of architecture, landscape architecture, and garden design. His recent books include New Sustainable Homes, 25 Apartments and Lofts Under 2500 Square Feet, and Prefab Now. He resides in Washington, D.C., and New York.

It is ordered on demand from our supplier and is usually dispatched within 6 - 13 working days This fascinating volume examines the recent increase in subnational environmental policy agreements between different countries, with a particular focus on Germany and the US. Holley Ralston explores why international environmental partnerships are forming at the state level and the factors that both aid and inhibit their long-term success. The book begins with an in-depth analysis of the theoretical and historical frameworks of transnational partnerships, before transitioning into a discussion of specific environmental agreements between US and German states. The following partnerships are covered in detail: California and Bavaria (1995 and 2000), Wisconsin and Bavaria (1998), Maryland and Schleswig-Holstein (2002) and California and North Rhine-Westphalia (2004). Taken together, these examples provide important insights into the ways in which multi-level governance structures allow subnational actors to shape policy developments around global environmental issues. This timely study - the first of its kind on this topic - will appeal to both academic researchers and policymakers with an interest in global environmental governance, environmental policymaking, comparative governance and the roles of individuals versus institutions. The process has finally begun. One of the key voices in that process will be Philip Bredesen, who served as governor of Tennessee from 2003-2011. In Fresh Medicine--the first book to address this reform--Bredesen delivers a concise, intelligent analysis of what the reform is, how it is flawed and why we have to fix it. Jones and Mayfield explore the creation and history of fossil fuels, their impact on the environment, and how they have become critical to our society. The authors also outline how adopting sustainable biofuels will be key to the future of energy stability and discuss a number of renewable energy options and biofuel feedstocks that are replacements for petroleum-based products. Our society is consuming energy at an alarming rate, and the authors warn that continuing fuel-usage patterns could permanently damage the environment. This book emphasizes the importance of continued scientific, agricultural, and engineering development while it outlines the political and environmental challenges that will accompany a complete shift from fossil fuels to renewable energy and biomass. Our Energy Future is an accessible resource for undergraduate students studying biofuels and bioenergy. (This title is available on demand: expected date of dispatch will be 4-7 working days once ordered) Current economic growth strategies are rapidly depleting the natural resources and eco-system services that we depend on. As many developing countries strive to eradicate poverty via economic growth, they are all encountering the consequences of global warming and dwindling levels of cheap oil, productive soils, metals, clean water supplies and forest products. If the fast-developing large-scale countries (China, India, Brazil) and small-scale countries (South Africa, Mexico, Venezuela, Poland) want to develop in the same way and to the same level as currently developed economies, they will simply be unable to find the natural resources they require to make this happen. For these developing countries, very different solutions are required. In addition, the world's population is expected to grow by three billion by 2050 and most of these people will be living in cities in Africa and Asia. Put all this together and it is clear that some radical changes are on the way. Just transitions provides a comprehensive overview of these global challenges from the perspective of a southern, developing country. Informed by the extremely difficult task of reconciling the need to eradicate poverty with the need to rebuild our eco-system services and natural resources, this book provides us with a way of thinking about the global challenges we face and the kinds of solutions that are emerging, in particular in developing economies in the Global South. To this end, the literature and case studies the book draws on are mainly from developing country contexts, although the book discusses these and the South African challenges as part of a set of global trends. None of the recent publications on sustainable development in Africa deal with eco-system services and natural resources. This is the first book that integrates development thinking and ecological concerns. What also makes the book unique is that it is not confined to a particular field of study or discipline. The conceptual language used to tell this story is drawn from complexity theory. The authors argue that complexity theory opens up the space that is needed to develop a more trans-disciplinary understanding of a set of challenges that cannot be grasped if we remain locked into traditional disciplinary modes of thinking and they thus introduce a range of topics that are rarely discussed together in a single text. There is an obvious need for a book on sustainable development that is informed primarily by the concerns, institutional settings, literatures and dynamics that prevail in the least-developed and middle-developing economies, with special reference to Africa. This book is it. Format:paperback Pages:360

This book teaches that endurance is improved not by riding longer distances, but by reducing riding time and adding heavy strength training. Traditionally cyclists and endurance athletes have avoided strength training, afraid that the extra muscle weight will slowthem down, but coauthors Roy Wallack and Jacques DeVore show that exactly the opposite is true. The maximum overload program uses weightlifting to create sustainable power and improve speed while cutting training time in half and eliminating the dreaded deterioration during the second half of a ride. A40-minute Maximum Overload workout, done once or twice a week, can replace a long day in the saddle and lead to even better results. The comprehensive program includes unique takes on diet, interval training, hard and easy training, and sustainable power. Backed by the most trusted authority in the sport, Bicycling Maximum Overload for Cyclists will appeal to cyclists and triathletes of all levels looking to improve their performance and achieve better overall fitness and long-term health. Vermicast--a biologically active, nutrient-rich mix of earthworm castings and decomposed organic matter--sells for $400 or more per cubic yard. Compare that to regular compost, sold at about $30 a cubic yard, and you'll see why vermicomposting has taken root in most countries and on every continent but Antarctica. Vermicomposting is also one of the best sustainable solutions for organic waste management. Vermicomposting manure and crop wastes on farms improves crop yields while reducing demand for off-farm inputs. Vermicast has higher nutrient levels and lower soluble salt content than regular compost, and it improves soil aeration, porosity, and water retention. Plus, vermicast suppresses plant diseases and insect attacks. Municipalities, businesses, community gardens, schools, and universities can set up vermicomposting operations to process food residuals and other waste materials. The Worm Farmer's Handbook details the ins and outs of vermicomposting for mid- to large-scale operations, including how to recycle organic materials ranging from food wastes and yard trimmings to manure and shredded office paper. Vermicomposting expert Rhonda Sherman shares what she has learned over twenty-five years working with commercial worm growers and researchers around the world. Her profiles of successful worm growers across the United States and from New Zealand to the Middle East and Europe describe their proven methods and systems. This book digs into all the details, including: Choosing the right production system Regulatory issues and developing a business and marketing plan Finding and managing feedstocks Pre-composting: why and how to do it Monitoring an active worm bed Harvesting, screening, testing, packaging, and storing vermicast Markets for earthworms and vermicast Food security: how vermicast benefits soils and plants Keys to success: avoiding common pitfalls From livestock farms and restaurants to colleges, military bases, and prisons, Sherman details why and how commercial-scale vermicomposting is a fast-growing, sustainable solution for organic waste management. The Worm Farmer's Handbook is the first and only authoritative how-to guide that goes beyond small-scale operations and demystifies the science and logistics of the fascinating process that is vermicomposting. Features Summary Techniques and systems for processing food scraps, manure, yard debris, paper, and more Turning waste into wealth sounds too good to be true, but many worm farmers are finding that vermicomposting is a reliable way to do just that...
