This item is sold brand new. It is ordered on demand from our supplier and is usually dispatched within 7 - 12 working days The late fourteenth century was the age of the Black Death, the Peasants' Revolt, the Hundred Years War, the deposition of Richard II, the papal schism and the emergence of the heretical doctrines of John Wyclif and the Lollards. These social, political and religious crises and conflicts were addressed not only by preachers and by those involved in public affairs but also by poets, including Chaucer and Langland. Above all, though, it is in the verse of John Gower that we find the most direct engagement with contemporary events. Yet, surprisingly, few historians have examined Gower's responses to these events or have studied the broader moral and philosophical outlook which he used to make sense of them. Here, a number of eminent medievalists seek to demonstrate what historians can add to our understanding of Gower's poetry and his ideas about society (the nobility and chivalry, the peasants and the 1381 revolt, urban life and the law), the Church (the clergy, papacy, Lollardy, monasticism, and the friars) gender (masculinity and women and power), politics (political theory and the deposition of Richard II) and science and astronomy. The book also offers an important reassessment of Gower's biography based on newly-discovered primary sources. STEPHEN RIGBY is Emeritus Professor of Medieval Social and Economic History at the University of Manchester; SIAN ECHARD is Professor of English, University of British Columbia. Contributors: Mark Bailey, Michael Bennett, Martha Carlin, James Davis, Seb Falk, Christopher Fletcher, David Green, David Lepine, Martin Heale, Katherine Lewis, Anthony Musson, Stephen Rigby, Jens Roehrkasten. Features Summary John Gower's poetry offers an important and immediate response to the turbulent events of his day. The essays here examine it from an historical angle... It is ordered on demand from our supplier and is usually dispatched within 7 - 12 working days Children and youth have tended to be under-reported in the historical scholarship. This collection of essays recasts the historical narrative by populating premodern Scottish communities from the thirteenth to the late eighteenth centuries with their lively experiences and voices. By examining medieval and early modern Scottish communities through the lens of age, the collection counters traditional assumptions that young people are peripheral to our understanding of the political, economic, and social contexts of the premodern era. The topics addressed fall into three main sections: the experience of being a child/adolescent; representations of the young; and the construction of the next generation. The individual essays examine the experience of the young at all levels of society, including princes and princesses, aristocratic and gentry youth, urban young people, rural children, and those who came to Scotland as slaves; they draw on evidence from art, personal correspondence, material culture, song, legal and government records, work and marriage contracts, and literature. Janay Nugent is an Associate Professor of History and a founding member of the Institute for Child and Youth Studies at the University of Lethbridge, Alberta, Canada; Elizabeth Ewan is University Research Chair and Professor of History and Scottish Studies at the Centre for Scottish Studies, University of Guelph, Ontario, Canada. Contributors: Katie Barclay, Stuart Campbell, Mairi Cowan, Sarah Dunnigan, Elizabeth Ewan, Anne Frater, Dolly MacKinnon, Cynthia J. Neville, Janay Nugent, Heather Parker, Jamie Reid Baxter, Cathryn R. Spence, Laura E. Walkling, Nel Whiting. Lauren Huttons life fell apart at the age of thirty. She lost her husband, her career, and her father. When the future looked dark, Hutton turned to her past for inspiration. There, she rediscovered the true love of her life. It wasnt another person. Instead, this love was Sarh, the voice of Huttons own soul. Sarh had been speaking to Hutton for years, but she kept trying to tune her out through antidepressants, drugs, and overwork. As Hutton gradually realized Sarhs identity and purpose, she began to reconnect with a part of herself she had long thought lost. The pressures of adulthood, career, and relationships had stifled the creativity and curiosity she had cherished as a child. Hutton rediscovered her old passionsand now she shares her spiritual and metaphysical knowledge with you. Hutton teaches that you cant look to the Universe for guidance. She didnt find the answers to her questions out in the world but inside herself. By listening to her souls voice, Hutton realized who she was meant to be, and she transformed her life. She became spiritually fulfilled and committed herself to helping others hear their own soul voices. About the Author Lauren Hutton has devoted her life to teaching people to access their soul space. She assists them in integrating human experiences with those of the soul, the master voice within, and navigates people back to their innate creative abilities. Hutton draws wisdom from her own soul voice, Sarh, and her studies with ascended masters, those who have completed their time on earth. She believes the spiritual experiences humans seek can be found inside themselves. Hutton has previously worked as a newspaper reporter, a communications professional, a nonprofit lobbyist, a public affairs specialist, and a business owner. She now splits her time between Longmont in Colorado, Encinitas in California, and her home state of Texas. She enjoys traveling, playing with her dog, Ollie, and meeting new people through her work with www.newenergycreator.com. (This title is available on demand: expected date of dispatch will be 4-7 working days once ordered) Katrijn van der Caab, freed slave and wigmaker¿s apprentice, travels with her eccentric employer from Cape Town to Vogelzang, a remote farm where a hairless girl needs their services. The year is 1794, it is the age of enlightenment, and on Vogelzang the master is conducting strange experiments in human breeding and classification. It is also here that Trijn falls in love. Two hundred years later and a thousand miles away, Sister Vergilius, a nun at a mission hospital, wants to free herself from an austere order. It is 1961 and her life intertwines with that of a gentleman farmer ¿ an Englishman and suspected Communist ¿ who collects and studies insects and lives a solitary life. While a group of Americans arrive in a cavalcade of caravans and a new republic is about to be born, desire is unfurling slowly. In Claire Robertson¿s majestic debut novel, two stories echo across centuries to expose that which binds us and sets us free. Format:paperback Pages:288

Called by critics "funny, sincere, and just generally brilliant," Gumballs is a one-man variety show spanning graphic memoir, observational comedy, razor-sharp character studies, and so much more. Gumballs dispenses an array of bright, candy-colored short comics about Erin's gender transition, anecdotal true tales of growing up as a triplet, and fictional stories of a socially inept lovestruck teenager named Tobias. The wide-ranging series is filled with single-page gag cartoons, visual diaries of everyday life, funny faux personal ads, and real-life horror stories of customers at his day job. Gumballs offers a variety of flavors that will surely delight anyone with a taste for candid self-reflection and observations of humanity. Gumballs tips its hat to the classic alt-comic tradition of Eightball, Optic Nerve, and Box Office Poison, but speaks with a delightfully fresh voice for the modern age. This book collects Gumballs #1-4, plus 32 pages of brand-new content!
