Author: Albie Sachs Publisher: Oxford University Press (2009) ISBN-10: 0199571791 ISBN-13: 9780199571796 Condition: Very Good. Light wear to edges of the dust jacket.  Else a very good copy. Binding: Hardcover with dust jacket Pages: 306 Dimensions: 22.1 x 14.4 x 2 cm +++ by Albie Sachs (With Author's Inscription) +++ From a young age Albie Sachs played a prominent part in the struggle for justice in South Africa. As a result he was detained in solitary confinement, tortured by sleep deprivation and eventually blown up by a car bomb which cost him his right arm and the sight of an eye. His experiences provoked an outpouring of creative thought on the role of law as a protector of human dignity in the modern world, and a lifelong commitment to seeing a new era of justice established in South Africa. After playing an important part in drafting South Africa's post-apartheid Constitution, he was appointed by Nelson Mandela to be a member of the country's first Constitutional Court. Over the course of his fifteen year term on the Court he has grappled with the major issues confronting modern South Africa, and the challenges posed to the fledgling democracy as it sought to overcome the injustices of the apartheid regime. The book provides unique access to an insider's perspective on modern South Africa, and a rare glimpse into the working of a judicial mind. By juxtaposing life experiences and extracts from judgments, Sachs enables the reader to see the complex and surprising ways in which legal culture transforms subjective experience into objectively reasoned decisions. With rare candour he tells of the difficulties he has when preparing a judgment, of how every judgment is a lie. Rejecting purely formal notions of the judicial role he shows how both reason and passion (concern for protecting human dignity) are required for law to work in the service of justice.

Volume 2 1971. Hard  cover with dust cover, 527 pages. Very good condition. Over 1kg. Compiled and translated by R.Raven-Hart During the first fifty years of Dutch colonisation at the Cape of Good Hope many travellers arrived in Table Bay, on their way to the East:some came voluntarily, others by force of circumstance.   They came ashore, looked around, observed strange, indigenous people, interesting plants and animals, they visited the little settlement, met the local personalities, wondered at the way-of-life. They also consulted and negotiated with the Dutch officials, and sought help in their difficulties.   And, most frequently, they recorded their impressions so as to inform and astonish their firneds in Europe with the wonders they had seen. These impressions were sometimes published; but more often they appeared in ships' log books and other mss, unpublished, and available to the researchers of today in archives and special liabraries only.   Such recorded impressions are the subject matter of this book: Major Raven-Hart has selected, transcribed and meticulously translated a total of 104 accounts by visitors to the Cape between 1652 and 1702. They are taken from the original Dutch, English, French, Portuguese, Danish and German; with one exception, the list is exhaustive for this period.   The language styles are varied; quaint and vivid, penetrating, and sometimes quite coarse.   To accompany the transcribed texts, and to help the reader enjoy and understand, Major Raven-Hart has provided background and context notes to describe contemporary happenings in Europe, official records by the Cape commanders and governors and biographical notes on the writers.   In the index the reader will find references to animals, plants, persons, names, etc; a glossary of foreign words, definitions of various sea-faring and navigational terms and expressions; identifications of flora and fauna, bibliographies; and explanatory notes. This index is not just a valuable and practical working tool-it is virtually a concentrated commpanion-book or vade mecum for late 17th C history of the Cape.   A feature of this book are the illustrations: the author has been able to find 65 engravings, maps, title pages, portraits-most of which have been reproduced as full-or double-pages.

Hardcover. English. Horace Cox, London. 1876 2nd ed. ISBN: n/a. 734 pp & 6pp ads at back, frontispiece, illustrated title page, 14 plates, numerous text illustrations, tables. Original somewhat scuffed green cloth over bevelled boards, front ep taped, with ownership stamp. Title page, facing illustration and title page heavily foxed. Page 455 is loosely inserted. This was published in seventeen parts, and is a guide to travellers, explorers, and settlers, founded on the experiences of the authors, and referring incidentally to South Africa. Wallis (J.P.R.) Thomas Baines, second edition, Cape Town 1976, pages 157-8. 'Apparently through the undertaking (the publication of Nature and Art) he came to know an ex-artillery officer, W.B. Lord, who had travelled in Canada and Asia and now proposed that he and Baines should collaborate to put out a travellers' handbook, something on the lines of Galton's Art of Travel. It was a bulky work of some eight hundred quarto pages issued serially towards the end of 1868, and involved Baines in a great deal of exacting preparatory work. He contributed the major part of the text and practically all the illustrations, some of which he cut on wood, having taught himself the art.' 'William Lord and Thomas Baines intended Shifts and Expedients to be a wide-ranging manual of instruction on the art of surviving in, and enjoying, the great outdoors of the nineteenth century. Pooling their considerable experience of strange lands they produced an encyclopaedia of practical living for the aspirant explorer of a hundred years ago. Everything is explained: wagons and boats, horses and oxen, tents and firearms, hunting and fishing, observing and collecting, carpentry and metal-working, camping requisites, bush cuisine, medical improvisation, the best ways to cross rivers, to move heavy objects, to build huts. The work is lavishly illustrated with wood-engravings by Baines. Mendelssohn (Sidney) South African Bibliography Vol. 1 Book No: 2501231

Eco returns to the Middle Ages with Baudolino - a wondrous, provocative, beguiling tale of history, myth, and invention. It is April, 1204, and Constantinople, the splendid capital of the Byzantine Empire, is being sacked and burned by the knights of the fourth Crusade. Amid the carnage and confusion, one Baudolino saves a Byzantine historian and high court official from certain death at the hands of the crusading warriors, and proceeds to tell his own fantastical story. Born a simple peasant in northern Italy, Baudolino has two major gifts - a talent for learning foreign languages and skill in telling lies. One day, when still a boy, he met a foreign commander in the woods, charming him with his quick wit and lively mind. The commander - who proves to be the emperor Frederick Barbarossa - adopts Baudolino and sends him to the university in Paris, where he makes a number of fearless, adventurous friends. Spurred on by myths and their own reveries, this merry band sets out in search of Prester John, a legendary priest-king who was said to rule over a vast kingdom in the East - a phantasmagorical land of strange creatures with eyes on their shoulders and mouths on their stomachs, of eunuchs, unicorns, and lovely maidens. As always with Eco, this abundant novel includes dazzling digressions, outrageous tricks, pages of extraordinary feeling and poetry, and vicarious reflections on our postmodern age. Baudolino is an utterly marvellous tale by the inimitable author of THE NAME OF THE ROSE.
