While the brilliantly designed monsters are indeed scary, it's the complex twists and turns of the plot that really produce the game's terror. Gameplay is largely puzzle-based. Much of it involves gathering clues and items to solve each puzzle. There are a few fights thrown in, but these are quite easy, and mostly used to show off the developers' bizarre creations. The level of both puzzles and fighting can be adjusted to match each player's skill level. Although its mechanics are rudimentary, the game's presentation is anything but. A heavy use of fog is the game's hallmark effect, greatly adding to the mood. Sound--both effects and music--alternates between eerie silence and sudden, shocking crescendos. Although the graphics and sound are both top-notch they aren't massively different from the PS2 version, in fact none of the game has really evolved from the PS2 version except for the addition of a new playable mission. Although it is comparatively short you do get to play as a new character: deranged, confusing psycho-chick Maria, whom you encounter throughout the game as James. The real star of this game is the story. It's very rich and intricate--a sharp contrast to the banal scenarios that frame most games. The game is short, but you'll want to give it another go to discover its multiple endings and secret items. Most RPGs are heavy on text, light on adventure, and, thus for most gamers, boring. The set up to Summoner (U) 's sweeping story line is so slow at the beginning that anything good coming later in the game is completely masked. As the story begins, you play as Joseph, a young gent who has vowed to never again use his summoning powers. This is because a demon he had previously summoned to protect his village actually burned the village down and killed everyone he loved. Those who stick through this heavy exposition will be rewarded with a twisting, non-linear plot. The environments are carefully designed, built, and textured to convey a grand sense of scale and colour. The castle's courtyard, for example, is a great place to visit, as its booths and caravans are festooned with colourful cloths and coverings. The place is abuzz with people, many of whom want to chat and share information with you. The castle itself is immense, dwarfing everything and everyone around it. The game's graphical splendour is cut somewhat short, though, by draw-in problems that give it a terribly disjointed look. Summoner (U) 's combat system is pretty cool. The idea is to chain your attacks by pressing the controller's D-pad while your sword blow is being delivered. A little chain icon appears above your character's head and signals when to time your move. By chaining attacks, you can sustain your own offensive action and make the attacks longer, more interesting, and much more fun. --Todd Mowatt

Product Description Kessen II (U) (PS2) Review The bigger brother of PlayStation 2 launch title Kessen, Kessen II (U) is a very tactical title which requires great patience and bags of time to play, but rewards the player who sticks with it with gameplay by the sackload. It's a Japanese-developed game set in China and in typical Japanese style the story revolves around the feudal period of the country's history, telling a story of honour and betrayal on a grand scale. Think of it as a console war game involving ordering huge units of troops around a battlefield and you won't be far wrong. As a gaming experience Kessen II (U) can be rewarding and at the same time oddly frustrating, given the relatively poor quality of graphics during planning phases and the ponderous and overly intrusive cutscenes. The fighting sequences are all very impressive, though, with up to 500 troops on screen at any one time and the inclusion of magic users who can throw hellfire, damnation and some very impressive large boulders around with relative abandon. For a game of such complexity the learning curve is nicely balanced and never feels as if it's going to get too difficult too quickly, but what may really hold the game back is its core subject--a tactics game set in feudal Japan will appeal to a very limited market. That said, if you fancy a break from Metal Gear 's military tip-toeing and Grand Theft Auto 's blatant "shoot first and never mind the questions" attitude there's a lot to be said for Kessen II (U).-- Chris Russell
