It is ordered on demand from our supplier and is usually dispatched within 7 - 15 working days Turning sixty isn't the end; it's only the beginning.Michael Cosgrove had a beautiful family, a successful career, and a lovely Southern California home overlooking the Pacific Ocean. At age sixty, he decided to leave all that behind to sail around the world. With the vision of rugged individualism and salty tales to share with his grandchildren, Cosgrove quickly realized that sailing around the world wasn't as easy as he had imagined. From a psychotic crewmate, to sleep deprivation and mental breakdowns, to constant storms and hallucinations, Cosgrove rode the waves, trying to keep his idea of doing something grand" alive. Alone, and thousands of miles away from everyone he loved, he was forced to ask himself one question: What in God's name am I doing here?In his attempt to avoid the inevitable (growing old, weak, frail), Cosgrove runs amok. He breaks his budget to outfit the boat and then refuses to read the manuals. He enters unfamiliar harbors in the dead of night, hires a violent first mate, and sails headlong into ferocious storms. At the same time, he longs for the simpler days when his four daughters were still children, when his first marriage was still intact, and when his dreams were still within reach. Though driven by scenes of sheer terror, absurd folly, and deep inner searching, the tone is always buoyant and laugh-out-loud funny.Imperfect Passage is the story of one man's perseverance against Father Time and Mother Nature, proving that with enough will, one can indeed conquer the unconquerable. There is Antarctica, Azerbaijan, algal blooms, and alluvial fans. Astronauts appreciating awe-inspiring views of Earth from above. And these ancient Appalachian ridges in America intersected by an azure river in autumn!' We've all looked up at clouds and found faces, objects and animals within their white puffy shapes. Astronauts and satellites can do the same thing - but from far above in outer space...While working on a story about wildfires in northern Canada, NASA science writer and new father Adam Voiland found a stunning satellite image of an enormous smoke cloud, many miles across, shaped like the letter 'V'. The majesty of that image made Adam wonder: could he track down all 26 letters of the alphabet for his newborn baby son, using only satellite imagery and photographs of the Earth taken by astronauts? With the help of readers and colleagues at NASA, he started to collect images of clouds, blooms of sea plankton and dust storms that formed shapes reminiscent of all the letters from A to Z. The result is this beautiful book of earth imagery. It offers a unique view of the alphabet, where letters are spelled out by rivers, deserts, mountains and ice. At a time when Space travel is more popular than ever, and astronauts from Chris Hadfield to Tim Peake are inspiring a whole generation of young readers, this book is a delight for adults and children alike. It is at once a celebration of Space, language and the natural beauty of our home planet, and a gift to keep for ever. Features Summary Aloha, A! What begins with A? (This title is available on demand: expected date of dispatch will be 4-7 working days once ordered) With the invasion of Russia by Germany in 1941, Britain gained a new ally and a responsibility to provide material for the new front. More than four million tonnes of supplies such as tanks, fighters, bombers, ammunition, raw materials and food were transported to Russia during a four-year period. The cost was high and by May 1945, the campaign had seen the loss of 104 merchant ships and sixteen military vessels, and the thousands of seamen they carried. The Arctic route was the most arduous of all convoy routes. The ever-present threat of attack from German U-boats and Luftwaffe bombers such as the dreaded Focke-Wulf Fw 200 Condor were not all the Arctic convoys had to contend with. They had to deal with severe cold, storms, fog, ice floes and waves so huge they tore at the ships' armour plating. It is to the memory of these brave men that this book is dedicated and the stories of the immeasurable contribution they made to the Allied efforts during the Second World War have been collected for this book by their veteran comrades.   A Furnace Afloat: The Wreck of the Hornet and the Harrowing 4,300-mile Voyage of Its Survivors Hardcover – September 30, 2003 - Joe Jackson - 2003 - Paperback as new. On May 3, 1866, the clipper ship Hornet was consumed by fire and sank in the middle of the South Pacific. Thirty-one survivors boarded three tiny lifeboats and began the 4,300-mile voyage to the Hawaiian Islands. Along the way, they faced terrible heat, storms, starvation, treachery, mutiny and the threat of cannibalism. Those who made landfall, six weeks later, became some of the 19th century's most famous castaways. True crime veteran Jackson (Leavenworth Train, etc.) superbly retells the tale, drawing on impressive primary sources. In addition to the journals left by the captain and two passengers, Jackson incorporates interviews with the survivors conducted by a young reporter named Mark Twain, who happened to be in Hawaii at the time. (Twain's articles on the Hornet were picked up by newspapers worldwide and made his reputation, despite a mistaken byline in Harper's of "Mark Swain.") These sources allow Jackson to quote dialogue, sketch characters' thoughts and avoid the speculation that diminishes so many historical narratives. These events are dramatic enough: a thief steals bread-and murder is nearly the result; a seaman sacrifices a water ration to a sick man he fully expects to eat the next day; and mutineers huddle in the stern to plot. Jackson weaves in astute tidbits of history, philosophy and science, explaining why, for example, cannibalism is not a physiologically effective survival tactic. Vividly and sympathetically written, this is a tragic yet triumphant book about the limits of humanity and human endurance.
