This volume was in the library of Lord Rosebury whilst he was Prime Minister of Great Britain. Rosebery was a pivotal figure in the formation of the IBEA Co and a firm supporter. Indeed, without his input it is doubtful the company would have become manifest upon the ground in East Africa. A good copy of the first edition of a very scarce title of only two editions (also ). An ambitious and short lived project, the IBEA Co kick started European government, trade and settlement in Kenya. The IBEA Co was wound up in and the administration assumed by Imperial government. Kendrick +++ In the s and s, the artistic director of the  Urs Graf Verlag  publishing house was the eminent thinker and scholar of antiquities, Titus Burckhardt. Under his direction, Urs Graf Verlag embarked on the publication of a series of facsimiles of ancient hand-made manuscripts, such as the Book of Kells and the Ilias Ambrosiana. These productions were of such high quality technically and intellectually that they were highly acclaimed by both experts and the wider public. All the Urs Graf facsimiles were limited editions much prized by collectors, but they were also acquired by museums and by the major libraries. The Lindisfarne Gospel Codex, created in the 8th century contains the four gospels of the New Testament Bible - Matthew, Mark, Luke and John. It is a year old, hand-made illuminated manuscript, which is housed in the British Museum. The Urs Graf facsimile for sale here, is a complete reproduction of the original codex, bound in vellum with tipped-in colour plates. Only 680 copies were produced. When permission was granted by the British Museum for Urs Graf Verlag to go ahead with the production of the complete facsimile, a decision was also taken to organize a comprehensive study by a panel of experts to cover all aspects of the Lindisfarne Gospels. The accompanying commentary volume contains the results of the exhaustive study they conducted. The result is a triumph of classical scholarship. In this engaging biography, Chris Ash recounts the life of this colonial statesman. He was an enigmatic man: when he died The Times estimated that his astonishing personal sway over his followers was equaled only by that of Parnell, the Irish patriot. During the fervor of the South African diamond rush Jameson established a small medical practice in Kimberley in ; it was here that he met and forged a lifelong friendship with Cecil John Rhodes. Jameson's thirst for adventure, coupled with Rhodes's dream of expanding the British Empire from the Cape to Cairo, led to the occupation of Mashonaland in , with Jameson having laid the groundwork in his political dealings with Lobengula, king of the Matabele. This is Jameson's story: from Administrator of Mashonaland, to the 'invasion' of Portuguese East Africa (Mozambique), the Matabele War, the infamous 'Jameson Raid' and his subsequent trial and incarceration in London.   A passion for books and a passion for collecting fine editions was the recipe that created the successful group of bookshops in Johannesburg called Bookdealers. 2008 Mahatma Ghandi 1/10oz Gold Proof   The Protea coin series commemorates various aspects and important events in the history of South Africa. The 2008 Protea Coin Series will feature Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi – better known as Mahatma Gandhi (1869 – 1948). Mahatma Gandhi lived in South Africa from April 1893 to July 1914 Although not South African by birth, he said “I was born in India, but I was made in South Africa”. He said these words because he first started with his campaign of “Ahimsa” (non-violence) and “Satyagraha” (way of truth) while he was campaigning for freedom in South Africa.   Gandhi influenced both nationalist and internationalist movements and brought the cause of India’s independence from British colonial rule to world attention. Gandhi’s principle of satyagraha (from Sanskrit satya: truth, and graha: grasp/hold), has also inspired other democratic activists, including Martin Luther King, Jr., John Lennon and the 14 th Dalai Lama.   The title of “Mahatma” (Sanskrit term of reverence “mahatma” meaning “one of great soul”) was accorded on Gandhi in 1915 by his admirer Rabindranath Tagore (the first Asian to win the Nobel Prize for Literature). It was given in response to Gandhi conferring the title of “Gurudev” Hindus and Muslims in India made Gandhi a target and he was shot and killed on 30 th  January 1948 by a Hindu extremist. It is ironic that this great pacifist, the first to employ non-violence in a political context, was never awarded the Nobel Peace Prize! The 1960 Nobel Peace Prize winner, Chief Albert Luthuli from South Africa, applied Gandhi’s principles while fighting apartheid South Africa. The profound lessons Gandhi leant that South Africa, spurned him to stand-up and without violence fight for his beloved India, earning him the title of “Father of the Nation”

The concentration camps of the Anglo-Boer War caused thousands of deaths and much suffering. But should the women and children in the camps only be seen as victims, or is there another story to be told? The War at Home tries to do just that. Firstly, it explores the unique strength of Boer women, who were often more vehemently anti-British than the men, and their role in supporting the Boer guerrilla fighters. There is also a chapter on the extraordinary Nonnie de la Rey (wife of General Koos de la Rey) who lived in the veld with her six children for nearly two years to avoid capture. A chapter on everyday life in the camps again points out how some camps were run more effectively than others and how for many women the biggest challenge was keeping boredom at bay. In an effort to stay busy, many young Boer women for instance received valuable training as nurse's assistants. Another chapter on the clash of cultures between British doctors and Boer women explains why camp doctors started to blame the personal hygiene and mothering abilities of Boer women when they could not find ways to cure the dying children. The book also takes the suffering of black civilians in the black camps into account with a special focus on black children. As in the white camps, the majority of the 20 000 deaths in the black camps were children. Lastly, in the year in which the Women's Monument in Bloemfontein celebrates its centenary, The War at Home looks critically at the meaning of the monument then and now. Hardcover, 272 pages
