Of course in Battlefield 1942 "various vehicles" meant jeeps and tanks, in Battlefront II it means X-wings, TIE Fighters, AT-ATs and, for the first time, Episode III vehicles like the BARC speeder, Jedi Starfighter II and V-wing. The biggest change to the game, apart from the new vehicles, is space battles with several of the levels taking part aboard giant space cruisers which you can exit in starfighters, have a dogfight in deep space around and then pilot back to for a bit more on foot combat. Levels include the Blockade Runner from the beginning of A New Hope, the space battle above Coruscant and Utapau and Mustafa from Episode III. Another long awaited addition is playable Jedi, although you can only be one for a short time so as to not unbalance the gameplay. Although the emphasis is on online play the single player mode has been beefed up with better artificial intelligence and a proper story linking all the missions. Thankfully, the jaw-dropping graphics are matched up to a very playable shoot 'em-up that works as a slightly more in-depth version of the PS2's Starfighter, except without any of that Episode I nonsense; instead it recreates everything from the Death Star trench run to the Battle of Hoth. The game is actually a sequel to Rogue Squadron on the N64--an excellent game that many only remember from the rather lacklustre PC version. It's structurally very similar to the original, with a dozen or so levels and a Star Destroyer full of secret levels and ships. There are a few new ideas, such as controllable wingman and ground troops, and some of the levels are set in deep space instead of just planetside, but at its heart this is still Rogue Squadron Deluxe. What elevates the game to an object of worship is the graphics--they really do look almost identical to the movies, with several scenes being copied exactly, and move with a fluidity and grace you wouldn't have thought possible from a ￂﾣ150 console. The only flaw is that the missions are needlessly short, but there's plenty of replayability, and by gosh there's those graphics...-- David Jenkins

Sabre-swinging action on a console has never looked better. Yes, the game has bright and shiny graphics that take advantage of the Dreamcast's extra processing muscle, but the game relies heavily on the basic walk-from-left-to-right-and-chop-the-baddies formula reminiscent of Double Dragon. Fortunately, LucasArts made quite a few wise tweaks for this new version. In addition to the original playable characters (Obi-Won Kenobi, Qui Gon Jinn and Mace Windu) the Dreamcast version adds the speedy Ki-Adi-Mundi. The Dreamcast version runs very quickly and smoothly (supposedly at 60 frames per second) no matter how much action is taking place on screen. New to this version are training levels for up-and-coming Jedi's and a cool mano-a-mano fighting mode (think Street Fighter with lightsabers) that's good for a few laughs. Without the Star Wars name, this game could have been considered rather ordinary. But Jedi Power Battles delivers the fun for all who ever wanted a chance to go toe-to-toe with Darth Maul and all of his friends from the Dark Side. Unfortunately, the good is overshadowed by a darker side. Were you one of the millions that enjoyed the very popular Rogue Squadron ? If you were, then get ready for more of the same--only this time wrapped around a lucrative Episode I license. This should appeal to newly initiated fans and hardball line-campers alike, as there's more of a concrete storyline to follow than the sidelined plot of RS. Just as in the aforementioned classic, Battle for Naboo revolves around the collection of Gold Medals. New vehicles abound, and there's more than enough variety in the game's locales. The ability to switch craft at any time during the missions doesn't hurt the replay factor, either. If you discover the flash speeder doesn't have enough firepower to finish off that ATAT tank, you can just enter a different hanger and take control of a police cruiser. The graphics are astounding, even better than what RS showcased. The game deals fantastic details everywhere--even the explosions are incredible. The sound, though, is very disappointing, especially when you consider that Factor 5 is behind this. The control and manoeuvring should have been giving some more fine-tuning, too. This type of game relies on precise controls, but Battle for Naboo suffers some sloppy movements and inaccurate targeting problems. This, combined with simplistic backgrounds and missions that are too straightforward, helps deflate what could have been a great game into merely an OK one. There's plenty of replay value here, but this game's certainly not for everyone. --Todd Mowatt

The biggest change to the game, apart from the new vehicles, is space battles with several of the levels taking part aboard giant space cruisers which you can exit in starfighters, have a dogfight in deep space around and then pilot back to for a bit more on foot combat. Levels include the Blockade Runner from the beginning of A New Hope, the space battle above Coruscant and Utapau and Mustafa from Episode III. Another long awaited addition is playable Jedi, although you can only be one for a short time so as to not unbalance the gameplay. Although the emphasis is on online play the single player mode has been beefed up with better artificial intelligence and a proper story linking all the missions.
