Vorster. Vorster was known for his staunch adherence to apartheid, overseeing (as Minister of Justice) the Rivonia Trial in which Nelson Mandela was sentenced to life imprisonment for sabotage, and (as Prime Minister) the Terrorism Act, the complete abolition of non-white political representation, the Soweto Riots and the Steve Biko crisis.

On 26 September 1897, Prof. James Leonard Brierly Smith was born in Graaff-Reine t in the Cape Province (now Eastern Cape). He studied chemistry at the University of Stellenbosch, and completed his PhD at Oxford. After he returned from Oxford, he began to teach chemistry at Rhodes University in Grahamstown. However, Smith gradually switched over to Ichthyology, the branch of zoology which focuses on the study of fish. During this time, he became a prominent figure in the scientific world when he identified a specimen of coelacanth, an ancient species of fish caught near East London in the Eastern Cape on 22 December 1938. The fish was caught by Hendrik Goosen on his trawler, the Nerine. The fish was first examined by Marjorie Courtney-Latimer who worked at the East London museum. After she sent a sketch of the strange looking fish to Prof. Smith, he identified it as a coelacanth, and named it Latimera chalumna in her honour and after the Chalumna River where it was caught. In 1952, another coelacanth was found in the Comoros Islands, and this time Prof. Smith obtained permission from Prime Minister DF Malan to use one of the air force's Dakota planes to fetch the specimen and bring it back to South Africa. Since then, numerous examples of this ancient, cave-dwelling fish have been found. Prof. Smith was also a prolific author, and wrote many books on fish, such as Sea Fishes of South Africa and Old Four Legs: The Story of the Coelacanth. Item code: FDC 2.12 Signed by: This first day cover is signed by South African Minister of Sport and Recreation in 1976, Piet Koornhof. Pieter G. J. Koornhof  (2 August 1925 – 12 November 2007) was a South African politician. As an  apartheid -era  National Party  cabinet minister, he held various portfolios in the cabinets of  B.J. Vorster  and  P.W. Botha, and was later appointed ambassador to the United States. After the end of apartheid, he joined the  African National Congress  in 2001.

The 2 1/2c - I've added a fine used stamp so that there is a Type I and Type II.  The B CBs - red sheet numbers - A CBs no sheet numbers.  The Blue lamp on the B Blocks shifted to the right to leave a larger white shadow. The  scares 12 1/2c Control Blocks - lightly hinged on top rows only - the rest M**.  A Block no sheets numbers - B block with red sheet numbers.  FDC has 2 marginal stamps with control nos. which is quite rare.   Please have a look at my other listings.  I will list my whole collection with the time to come as I'm discontinuing collecting stamps.
