Campanula is one of several genera in the family Campanulaceae with the common name bellflower. It takes both its common and its scientific name from its bell-shaped flowers— campanula is Latin for "little bell". The genus includes over 500 species and several subspecies, distributed across the temperate and subtropical regions of the Northern Hemisphere, with the highest diversity in the Mediterranean region east to the Caucasus. The range also extends into mountains in tropical regions of Asia and Africa.           The species include annual, biennial and perennial plants, and vary in habit from dwarf arctic and alpine species under 5 cm high, to large temperate grassland and woodland species growing to 2 metres tall. Campanula punctata commonly known as Spotted Bellflower is an upright, clump-forming perennial which typically grows 30-60cm tall. Large, drooping, tubular, white to pale pink, bell-like flowers (to 5cm long) with purple inside spotting appear in terminal racemes atop erect to slightly arching stems. Stems rise up from basal rosettes of rounded, toothed, medium green leaves (to 12.5cm long). Long summer bloom; ideal for cut flowers.

Stenoglottis fimbriata Seeds Common names: Fringed Stenoglottis; Fraiing-Stenoglottis   This charming, mauve, ground orchid  is easily identified by the dark markings found on the leaves and flowers. Stenoglottis fimbriata is a terrestrial tuberous orchid, reaching a height of 300-400 mm. It is found growing in a very thin humus or moss layer on rocks or in humus-rich soil in rock crevices or on tree trunks or fallen logs in shaded forests. The root system consists of a clump of elongated, fleshy tuberous roots. The roots are hairy, which allows the plant to attach itself to rocks. Leaves are dark green, lanceolate, 5-20 arranged in a basal rosette, ± 150 mm long and ± 20 mm wide. Leaves display wavy margins with recurved tips and are dotted with dark purple spots. The flowering stem is slender, purple in colour, 300 mm tall, leafless and bears small, green, spotted bracts. The lilac-pink flowers, 5-50, vary in size and are loosely arranged on a raceme. The raceme continues to elongate as the flowers open over a period of several weeks. All parts of the flower are spotted and lilac-pink in colour. The dorsal sepal is narrowly ovate and 4-8 mm long. The petals are elliptic to narrow, 3-6 mm long and thus shorter than the sepals. The three-lobed lip is a distinctive identifying character of the plant. It is 6-15 mm long, paler than the sepals but more densely spotted. The lateral lobes of the lip are usually shorter than the central lobe. They are often barely toothed or almost subdivided. Stenoglottis fimbriata flowers from January to April. Growing orchids from seed is a fairly specialized undertaking and it requires a bit of understanding of tissue culture techniques. If you have never grown orchids from seed we recommend that before attempting this you should first contact your local Orchid Society, or purchase a book on the subject, or both! The bitter sap in the leaves of Aloe greatheadii var davyana is used medicinally for the treatment of wounds, sores and burns. Aloe greatheadii var. davyana commonly known as Spotted Aloe has shiny green leaves that are spotted and forms a spreading rosette. This aloe flowers in mid-winter from June to July. It has sharp brown teeth on the leaf margins. It grows easily from seed and also transplants well. It is particularly striking when planted in groups. Aloes are very popular and some of the most rewarding plants to cultivate. They make excellent accent plants owing to their often strange and inspiring architectures, as well as the bright flowers that offset the grey-green leaves. They are also very suitable as container plants and small aloes can be used very effectively as border plants at the edge of a bed. Although aloes are most often included in rockeries, their application in horticulture is not limited to this feature and they can be used in almost any setting and in conjunction with most common garden plants. More about the Aloe genus below. Their natural adaptation to harsh and often arid climates makes aloes outstanding subjects for the water-wise garden. Aloes can tolerate long periods of drought, but it is not true that watering should be withheld to obtain optimal growth. Stressed plants are more susceptible to insects and pests. Plants flourish, flower better and are more resistant when given adequate water during the growing season. However, be very cautious not to overwater aloes because they may rot if they stay wet for too long. Adequate drainage is essential. Plant smaller aloes in raised beds and only water them when the top 5cm of soil has dried. Even though there are some species that are challenging to grow, most of the aloes are easy and can readily be grown just about any place in the country. Aloes generally need soils with good drainage and do best in warm climates. When planted in rich soil that are frequently mulched they will do well for many years without interference making them very low-maintenance plants once established. Aloe is a genus in the Asphodeloideae family containing about 600 species of flowering succulent plants. The most common and well known of these is Aloe vera. The genus is mostly native to Africa with about 125 being indigenous to South Africa. About 405 species can be found in Africa while about 45 species are found in the Arabian Peninsula. Socotra has 4 natural species and the Mascarene and other Western Indian Ocean Islands share about 7 species. Madagascar, for its size, has a pretty extensive collection of about 145 species. Aloes are sometimes confused with Agaves. Contrarily to Agaves, Aloe leaves contain a gel like sap. Another difference is that Aloes don't die after blooming as most Agaves do. Eagle Owl (bubo africanus) If there are no owls in your neighborhood, it may be because the habitat is unsuitable, or because there are no usable nest sites for them. They don’t build a nest, but use a suitable site. Position of Nesting Box: • 4 - 6 m above the ground, avoid direct sun. • Position box out of any prevailing wind. • Have a clear flight-path into the box. • Be in a quiet area. • Do not attempt to lure owls to the box with food, this will only encourage other animals and deter the owl. Nothing rusts on this box, as rust causes wood-rot. The wood has been treated with the best marine grade wood preserve available. The box design has been approved by Radical Raptors, Bird of Prey Rehabilitation & Awareness Centre. Eagle owls are predators of pest species, such as rats. Since they also eat insects, they keep the numbers of other potential pests in check too. Fewer owls mean more rats. The eagle owl is the most common South African owl. A distinguishing feature is the long and prominent ear tufts, but these are purely for show, as they have nothing to do with the actual ears. Their wingspan is about 1 meter. Generally the male call with two hoots: "Hooo hooopoooo" and the female answers with three. The fact that owls like to perch on telephone and electricity poles along the main roads is the cause of many casualties among them. At night when cars flatten insects, rodents and lizards on the road, the owls will come down onto the road surface to feed on the prey remains and are subsequently hit by passing vehicles. There are many legends and myths surrounding these birds and they are feared by many cultures. Historically it was believed that if an eagle owl roosted on your roof at night, it would surely mean a death in the family. This has given rise to unfounded superstitions, which threaten their existence in the wild. Already owls are increasingly forced to enter urban areas in search of food. Owls play a vital role in our ecosystem and it is important to safeguard them before there is a knock-on effect that will have serious environmental implications. If you ever see one bob its head up and down or from side-to-side while looking at you, it is trying to get a clearer, three dimensional picture of you. The Pseudosbeckia genus is placed in the Melastomataceae family. The Melastomataceae family has 163 genera with 4283 species. Other members of this family include genera such as Tibouchina, Melastoma, Osbeckia, Gravesia, Dicellandra, Heterocentron, Huberia, Topobea and Dissotis. Pseudosbeckia is said to be distributed across Mozambique and Zimbabwe. It will attract butterflies and bees to the garden.           Pseudosbeckia swynnertonii, previously known as Dissotis swynnertonii and Osbeckia swynnertonii is a small evergreen up to 1.2 m tall. It is native to Mozambique and Zimbabwe. In Mozambique it can be spotted at Martin’s Falls and in Zimbabwe it can be found growing in Melsetter and the Chimanimani Mountains. In young plants the leaves may be bristly. As they age they become elliptically oblong and 5 cm long by 2.5 cm wide. The upper side is glossy deep green while the underside is yellowish green with serrated leaf margins that appear more frequently at the end of the branches. The up to 8 cm wide, purple, violet veined shell flowers with ciliated margins and outstanding golden yellow stamens appear singly or in small clusters at the end of the shoots.

The genus Aloinopsis is relatively small and occurs mostly in the Eastern and Western Cape Provinces of South Africa, extending slightly into the southern part of the Northern Cape Province. One species is found in the north-eastern corner of the Northern Cape Province. Rainfall is sparse throughout the range. The genus Aloinopsis is a group of South African Indigenous mesembs that belongs to the Aizoaceae family. The genus name means “similar to aloe ”. Aloinopsis plants have a rather large tuberous root system, called a caudex, and are occasionally cultivated for the look of the caudex which can form the most unusual shapes. They also tend to grow more rosettes when they are raised. Many species have rough-surfaced, spoon-shaped leaves that grow in small rosettes. The roots are thick and the flowers are often striped with red. Aloinopsis are sometimes confused with Titanopsis, but the genus Titanopsis lack striped flowers. Aloinopsis are popular among collectors. Aloinopsis peersii, commonly known as jewel plant, is a succulent indigenous to South Africa. The triangular to tapered smooth blue to grey-green spotted leaves are 25 mm long. Aloinopsis peersii has fragrant honey scented yellow flowers of 25 mm in diameter.
