The order was awarded only to Generals and Marshals for successfully conducting combat operations involving one or more army groups and resulting in a "successful operation within the framework of one or several fronts resulting in a radical change of the situation in favor of the  Red Army." 20 recipients of this order was in the history only. 1985. Large hard cover. 192 pages. Very good condition.  Over 1kg. Hostility between the West and the communist world is such an accepted part of modern life that it is all too easy to forget that in 1939 the Soviet Union was the world's only communist state and that the Soviet Union was then seemingly riven by purges and economic troubles and threatened abroad by the ravening power of Nazi Germany. Today the Soviet Union is master of the eastern half of Europe; China, the world's most populous country, is also communist and there are communist or single-party socialist states in central America, Africa, the Middle East and Southeast Asia. The rise of communism began with the victories of the Red Army in World War II and the establishment of "people's democracies" in eastern Europe which quickly followed. The success of the Chinese communists in 1948 confirmed in many Western eyes the existence of a worldwide communist conspiracy, setting the stage for the Cold War confrontations of the fifties. The Korean War was fought to halt the expansion of this communist monolith, but there were soon signs of disharmony within the communist bloc as was seen in the growing independence of Yugoslavia and the Chinese-Soviet split. Such Dissent continues to the present day as persistent Sino-Soviet disputes and the efforts of Solidarity in Poland show. The Vietnam War, the Cuban intervention in Angola and the invasion of Afghanistan are examples of communist initiatives of the sixties and more recent times but in the same period Soviet missiles have been kept out of Cuba, a socialist government in Chile has been overthrown and Egypt has been weaned away from being a Soviet client.

Book and wrapper in great condition - Actually looks brand new and unread to me - 403 pages which includes and excellent index at the back -  Before Southern Africa's peac e there came the war. Between August 1987 and July 1988 Fidel Castro's Cuban Revolutionary Armed Forces, the South African Defence Force, Angolan government forces directed by Soviet officers and an Angolan opposition guerrilla army trained by Red China, France and the United States clashed in the biggest land battles in the history of black Africa. It was a fierce collision of ideologies and of modern warplanes, missiles and tanks across one of the world's most remote and undeveloped terrains known to Angola's former Portuguese colonial rulers as the Land at the End of the Earth. Thousands of men died and thousands more were terribly maimed. Weapons and ammunition worth billions of dollars were destroyed and expended. The Angolan economy was crippled. The budgets of Cuba, South Africa and the Soviet Union were subjected to terrible strains. It was a War for Africa's very soul. It culminated in a peace agreement, the New York Accords, signed on 22 December 1988,. The reader will learn what it is like to encounter an advanced Soviet MiG fighter in a French Mirage warplane 30,000 feet above the forests of Africa; what emotion grip a reconnaissance commando lying unseen inside Cuban lines within feet of enemy soldiers; how it feels in an armoured car to face a Soviet T-55 tank at just 30 feet in burning bush and swirling dust and smoke. This is, however, far more than just an account of men in battle. Woven through are details of the political background to the conflict and the diplomatic initiatives which governed the lives and deaths of young Cuban, South African and Angolan men at the front.    * Africana *  *N.B.*   If you buy more than one book from me you only pay R 6 postage on each additional book   – see what else I have to offer, it might be worth your while.

Subtitle: The Life of Georgy Zhukov  Author: Geoffrey Roberts  Publisher: Icon () Edition: First Edition ISBN-10: ISBN-13: Condition: Very Good Binding: Hardcover with dust jacket Pages: 375 Dimensions: 24 x 16.2 x 3.3 cm +++ by Geoffrey Roberts  +++ Drawing on rich new sources from the recently-opened Soviet archives, Geoffrey Roberts has fashioned the definitive, first full-scale biography of this seminal 20th century figure. Marshal Georgi Zhukov, Soviet officer in the Red Army,  played a decisive role the battles of Moscow, Stalingrad, and Kursk that brought down the Nazi regime. He was the first of the Allied generals to enter Berlin and took the German surrender. Zhukov had an equally eventful post-war career, sacked and banished twice, and wrongfully accused of treason. Since his death in Zhukov has been seen by many as the indispensable military leader of WWII, surpassing Eisenhower, Patton, Monty, and MacArthur.    A passion for books and a passion for collecting fine editions was the recipe that created the successful group of bookshops in Johannesburg called Bookdealers. The group started thirty years ago with one store in the quirky suburb of Yeoville and has grown through the years to a total of five shops, plus our online sales. Bookdealers is well-known for its collectable and used books. As we advanced the tanks began firing ahead speculatively. It was an amazing sight. After an Olifant [tank] unleashed a 105 mm shell you saw a path opening up through the forest just like the Red Sea divided for Moses. It is September 1987. The Angolan Army with the support of Cuban troops and Soviet advisors has built up a massive force on the Lomba River near Cuito Cuanavale in southern Angola. Their goal? To capture Jamba, the headquarters of the rebel group Unita, supported by the South African Defence Force (SADF) in the so-called Border War.  In the battles that followed, and shortly thereafter centred around the small town of Cuito Cuanavale, 3 000 SADF soldiers and 8 000 Unita fighters were up against a much bigger Angolan and Cuban force of over 50 000 men.  Thousands of soldiers died in the vicious fighting that is described in vivid detail in this book. Bridgland pieced together this account through scores of interviews with SADF men who were on the front line. This dramatic retelling takes the reader to the heart of the action.  The final battles of the war in 1987 and 1988 had an impact far beyond the borders of Namibia and Angola. They not only spelled the end of the last great neo-colonial attempts at African conquest by Cuba and the former Soviet Union, but also made possible the dismantling of apartheid in South Africa. Paperback, 496 pages & 16 pages image section. PROVISIONAL RELEASE DATE: 19 JUNE 2017

The term describes a "strong willed" woman. The iron metaphor was most famously applied to Margaret Thatcher, and was coined by Captain Yuri Gavrilov in 1976 in the Soviet newspaper Red Star, for her staunch opposition to the Soviet Union and socialism. Due to the wide popularity of this term, it has since been applied to many female political figures, including regional variations, and even retrospectively. ____________________________________________________  Feel free to e-mail me with any questions.

Subtitle: The Court of the Red Tsar Author: Simon Sebag Montefiore  Publisher: Phoenix () Edition: First Paperback Edition ISBN-10: ISBN-13: Condition: Very Good Binding: Softcover Pages: 720 Dimensions: 19.7 x 12.8 x 4.5 cm +++ by Simon Sebag Montefiore +++ The superb Simon Sebag Montefiore offers a composite picture of Stalin in extraordinary detail from his love of literature to his claim to complete amorality. The narcissistic psychopath who killed millions of people is revealed through countless interviews with Stalin's wives, granddaughters and servants. Any biography of a tyrant runs the risk of humanizing its subject to the point of appearing to mitigate his crimes. But Montefiore's intimate portrait actually throws the cold-hearted murderousness with which Stalin pursued and defended power into sharper relief. The book moves smoothly between detailed sketches of everyday life at the Kremlin and accounts of the paranoid and sanguinary scheming that determined Soviet politics. Just as strikingly, Montefiore shows how Stalin, a "master of friendships," used charm to win the support of members of the Party's inner circle. This haunting book gets us as close as we are likely to come to the man who believed that "the solution to every human problem was death" (From The New Yorker ).   A passion for books and a passion for collecting fine editions was the recipe that created the successful group of bookshops in Johannesburg called Bookdealers. This book is very much of its time. Written when the doomsday projectionists of the 1970s liked to imagine the very worse of the Cold War in the coming decade. And from their time scape of the late 70s and even in the opening years of the 1980s, it did seem that much of their worse expectations could be realised. This book is not as polished as Hackett's 'The Third World War' though it does come as a nice package which offers a similar though different vein as the more famous projectionist book. Written before Clancy and Coyle imagined their own mid 1980s crossing of the Fulda Gap by the Soviet hoards, this book at times could seem dull and dry in contrast to a 'Team Yankee' or 'Red Storm Rising'. They are different types of books though if you enjoyed them, then this book would be an interesting and sobering read. It is in many ways a serious imagining of the potentials for the then new technologies and the futurist predictions of what the fall out would be should a total war emerge between two vast Empires and their proxies. Like many books of this nature it is grim and cold, it gives you no heroes or narrative and simply paints the future as though it is a coming history. A good read if you are a fan of this genre. An especially good read if you could go back to 1978 and see the World through the eyes of many did then. I have many books on sale, please check my listings. I am happy to combine and save postage for you.

Alan Taffy Brice, an indomitable former member of Britains elite 22-SAS Regiment, led a Rhodesian Central Intelligence Organisation (CIO) secret assassination team in hostile Zambia comprising himself, Hugh Chuck Hind (also of 22-SAS) and Ian and Priscilla Sutherland, whose Zambian farm was used as their rear base. Their orders were to create divisions between the two Rhodesian dissident organisations, Joshua Nkomos ZAPU/ZIPRA (backed by Soviet Russia) and Robert Mugabes ZANU/ZANLA (backed by Red China), both rear-based in Lusaka. This true story tells how for six years they led both dissident parties by their noses in a bewildering dance of death and destruction, successfully leading each to believe the other was responsible for their woes.  They blew up, machine gunned and rocketed ZIPRAs Lusaka HQ four times and ZANLAs Lusaka HQ twice. To stir Zambias disenchantment with hosting the dissidents they bombed both the Central Post Office and the Times of Zambias and blasted an imperial stone lion off its plinth at the High Court leaving obvious clues behind them. When President Nyerere of Tanzania openly criticised Joshua Nkomo, they bombed his Lusaka Embassy in retaliation. In March 1975 they eliminated ZANUs Chairman, Herbert Chitepo with a car bomb. Certain his death was caused by internal divisions, President Kaunda arrested its top leaders and kicked the organisation out of Zambia this halted the war in Rhodesia for more than a year. In 1976 Brice killed ZAPUs number two man, Jason Moyo, with a parcel bomb. Brice survived the war and died recently allowing his own name and the real names of active participants and much else to be revealed for the first time. Chuck Hind was killed while on an operation and Ian Sutherland was captured by Zambian security forces. He spent five years in a hell hole that was a Zambian prison as a result. Paperback, 320 pages. Published March 2011
