We combine postage, so do look at our other items on offer.  Postage prices outside of South African borders will differ. Please enquire before purchasing. Dispatched within 3 business days. Our books are protected with a removable plastic cover and sent with care. Condition: Good. There's nothing quite like it anywhere in the world. It's a visual tour de force - complete with high drama, raw tragedy, sound effects and stunning costumes. Scripted by Nature and choreographed by the weather, hunger and sheer chance, it's the spectacular world of southern African wildlife. The variety of the landscape, the extremes of climate, and the huge diversity of vegetation create ideal conditions for a fraternity of wild animals unequalled anywhere else on Earth. More than 900 species of birds cohabit freely with 338 mammal species, a diverse population of reptiles and amphibians, and an inestimable number of insects. In South Africa alone, nearly six million hectares of land are devoted to conservation. There is a growing awareness of the importance of wildlife heritage, and the necessity for its continued survival, in spite of industrial development and the encroachment of man. Fuelling this awareness is the commitment of a group of dedicated photographers who spend days, months and years in the wild pursuing a dream: to capture on film the extraordinary lives of animals in a way that's never been done before. Each animal group (carnivores, primates, antelope, rats and mice, reptiles, birds) is briefly introduced; but the main focus of this book is the photographs, mostly life-size. These images enable immediate identification of the animals responsible for the droppings. To confirm identity, summary tables give details of average width, length and typical contents of droppings (feathers, twigs, leaves, sand, etc.). This should become a recommended reference for rangers and field guides in the region; and it will be of use to anyone with an interest in wildlife, and even to those who simply enjoy walking in the wild and observing the tracks and signs they encounter. (This title is available on demand: expected date of dispatch will be 4-7 working days once ordered) In 1834, Sir John Herschel, perhaps the most celebrated astronomer of his time, arrived at the Cape of Good Hope to spend four years observing the southern sky. Among his many other talents he was an accomplished artist, skilled in the use of an optical device known as a camera lucida. During these four years Herschel produced more than a hundred exquisite landscape sketches, some depicting the Feldhausen estate in the suburb of Wynberg, where he and his family lived, others meticulously recording scenes that enlivened his trips to Cape Point, to Table Mountain, to Hout Bay and to places in the farther reaches. Among the latter were Caledon, Franschhoek, Stellenbosch and Paarl. These Herschel landscape drawings are an almost unmatched contribution to the artistic and historical record of the Cape in the early nineteenth century. They are reproduced in this title, together with a narrative text and background material that firmly set the illustrations in their social and geographical context. The result is an evocative picture of the Cape Peninsula and its environs at a time when they were still largely wild. Format:leather / fine binding

This item is sold brand new. It is ordered on demand from our supplier and is usually dispatched within 6 - 13 working days The Swan Book is set in the future, with Aboriginals still living under the Intervention in the north, in an environment fundamentally altered by climate change. It follows the life of a mute teenager called Oblivia, the victim of gang-rape by petrol-sniffing youths, from the displaced community where she lives in a hulk, in a swamp filled with rusting boats, and thousands of black swans driven from other parts of the country, to her marriage to Warren Finch, the first Aboriginal president of Australia, and her elevation to the position of First Lady, confined to a tower in a flooded and lawless southern city. The Swan Book has all the qualities which made Wright's previous novel, Carpentaria, a prize-winning bestseller. It offers an intimate awareness of the realities facing Aboriginal people; the wild energy and humour in her writing finds hope in the bleakest situations; and the remarkable combination of storytelling elements, drawn from myth and legend and fairy tale, has Oblivia Ethylene in the company of amazing characters like Aunty Bella Donna of the Champions, the Harbour Master, Big Red and the Mechanic, a talking monkey called Rigoletto, three genies with doctorates, and throughout, the guiding presence of swans. Author: Philip Theron; Publisher: Manx; ISBN 9781920147457; 10 x new soft cover copies available. T he many adventures of Howard have been handed down from children to their parents for countless centuries. To this day these adventures are still told under the stars around the fire, soon after sunset on the eastern plains of Southern Africa when the raucous, piercing, pre–historic-like clarion of Hadedas can be heard as they glide to their favourite tree to roost for the night. Howard, driven by irresistible curiosity and a tenacious, non–negotiable urge for adventure, breaks from the mould and sets out on a journey far from his home in the sub–tropics of Mkhuze in the heart of Zululand, to the mysterious hinterland of Ghost Mountain, trees, bones, ghosts, wild animals and things. His jaunts have been related to the author ‘personally’, and in great detail. Howard wrote this novel for children, in an oddly humorous and informative style; to read to your disbelieving parents. Most of Howard’s adventures to the Valley of Bones, and an outrageous ghost party, are true. Admittedly some are truer than others but which, is left for you, the reader, to decide. “Both the young and the young at heart can be eternally thankful that these adventures didn’t remain untold. Quirky, funny, curious and determined, Howard the Hadeda is an intriguing creation and a storyteller of note — the perfect companion if you want to let your imagination take wing. So fly away, and go see what’s beyond that horizon! A few pages in back of book give some factual fun informaiton about hadedas... some love them... some love to hate them. They, like us, are from Africa. So there. Bookmark included. *Offers on lot of 5 will be considered. Shipping charges for 10 will be a single charge of R67, to main urban centres. * Please add R67 to standard shipping charge, for shipping to outlying (not main) centres in SA, for courier delivery service.
