South Africa
From Mushroom Valley to Delville Wood, South African Forces in World War One researched and excellently written by Tim Couzens. When war struck in 1914, it struck not just in Europe, but everywhere across the globe, including South Africa, whose troops saw action in five theatres. They fought one another on home soil, during a rebellion fuelled by old resentments; they fought the Germans in the deserts of South West Africa and the jungles of East Africa (now Namibia and Tanzania); they fought in Egypt; and they fought, and died in their thousands, on the Western Front. Tim Couzens’ The Great Silence tells the story of South Africa’s Great War, meticulously bringing the details of the different campaigns to light, with a dedicated chapter on each major theatre of action, from Sandfontein to Delville Wood, plus a special chapter on the contribution of black South African troops to the Allies’ ultimate victory. Fully illustrated with over 150 photographs, maps and graphics, and with eight special insets on some of the more extraordinary characters in the war – such as Jackie the baboon, who was wounded by shrapnel in Flanders and returned to South Africa a hero – The Great Silence takes us into the dark heart of the Great War itself. Softcover in good condition.266 pages. Illustrated. Tracked postage is R50.00.

South Africa
2015 paperback new and unread with 260 pages. R50 postage in SA. The past is brought to life in this historical epic about a South African family whose lives collided with the biggest event in history: the First World War. The central theme is the largely forgotten East Africa campaign, but by definition a world war has a wide reach. Five members of one family with deep roots in all four corners of the country, served in three different theaters of war. Their lives on active service are all interwoven and inseparable from the home front. Global events are juxtaposed with everyday life on a farm in the eastern Orange Free State. Appropriately, the author constructs linkages that span generations, uncovering individual experiences of an earlier conflict which had engulfed South Africa barely a decade before the eruption of the 1914–18 war. As the sons of early pioneers, this generation witnessed history in the making before writing their own. Riding into action on horseback or in a flying machine, their paths led from the South West African desert, through disease-infested jungles in East Africa to some of the great battles on the Western Front. Only one of the five came home unscathed although he crash-landed his aircraft behind enemy lines and only made it back through his audacity and brute strength. Another, an intellectual priest, was left for dead at Delville Wood, and his brother was wounded on Messines Ridge. The remaining two suffered from debilitating tropical illnesses. Hazard and hardship lingered on in the form of Spanish influenza, mining strikes and the Great Depression. The war cast a long shadow. Between them, these consciously literate men left substantial documentary legacies. Using extracts of their letters from the front, the story is to a large extent told in the words of those who were there. Context is provided by referencing existing literature, unpublished memoirs and archival material. It could be called a military history or a social history, but it is a truly South African story which contains much new material for historians, while for the general reader it offers an accessible insight into an unparalleled period of history.

Hardcover. English. Maskew Miller. 1921. 404pp illustrated with photos & maps. Fair to good condition in brown boards. Foxing on cut fore-edges and sporadically throughout. The great thriller writer and statesman John Buchan, author of The 39 Steps and other classics wrote this official history of the South African Forces in France as a homage to a country he had come to know and love as a British administrator after the Boer War. The South African brigade, raised from South African and Rhodesian regiments were sent to Egypt in 1915; and arrived in France the following year where they were attached to the 9th Scottish Division. They saw hard fighting during the Somme Offensive Ð particularly the bitter battles in and around Delville Wood and the Butte de Warlencourt. In 1917 they were in action at Arras and Cambrai; and in 1918 took part in resisting the German Spring offensives on the River Lys, and the Allied counter-offensives which culminated in the Armistice. The work of a great writer, this history is illustrated with photos & maps.

Though life "on the border" was often deeply upsetting, much of it was plain boring or humdrum, even pleasant - and occasionally hilarious. For those who were there, it was an unforgettable time with after-effects ranging from bitterness to fond nostalgia, often a mix of both. Though life "on the border" was often deeply upsetting, much of it was plain boring or humdrum, even pleasant - and occasionally hilarious. For those who were there, it was an unforgettable time with after-effects ranging from bitterness to fond nostalgia, often a mix of both. With his new title, author, broadcaster and journalist David Williams captures an era that defined the life experience of white men who are now between 35 and 60. Conscripts and their families will read this book with a sense of recognition, while those who did not understand the broader picture at the time should find it here. On the Border is accessible and anecdotal, using personal accounts to enliven the narrative. It draws on the experiences of both conscripts and regulars, moving through basic training to major operations like Savannah, Cassinga and the battles around Cuito Cuanavale in 1987/98 the conclusion of "the war for Africa". After bitter debate, South Africa, a dominion of the British Empire at the time, declared war on Germany five days after the invasion of Poland in September 1939. Thrust by the British into the campaign against Erwin Rommels German Afrika Korps in North Africa, the South Africans fought a see-saw war of defeats followed by successes, culminating in the Battle of El Alamein, where South African soldiers made a significant contribution to halting the Desert Foxs advance into Egypt. This is the story of an army committed somewhat reluctantly to a war it didnt fully support, ill-prepared for the battles it was tasked with fighting, and sent into action on the orders of its senior alliance partner. At its heart, however, this is the story of men at war. Paperback, 352 pages
