South Africa
This is the story of South African soldiers during the 1916 Somme offensive, which took place between the Allied forces and the Germans along the Somme River in France and was one of the bloodiest conflicts of the First World War, resulting in over a million deaths in six months. In July 1916, the men of the 1st South African Infantry Brigade were involved in recapturing the village of Lingueval and clearing Delville Wood of enemy soldiers, but they suffered extreme casualties. After six days of fighting, of the Brigade's 3433 soldiers, only 750 were left standing. The rest were dead or wounded. This book tells the stories of the men of the Brigade via their letters, diaries, and interviews that the author conducted with survivors many years ago. Not much has been written about South Africans during World War I. Surprisingly, it is a relatively untapped period of military history. This fascinating new book covers the iconic battle of Delville Wood, the most famous event involving South Africans during the war. Paperback, 280 pages Published August 2014

The Great War of 1914-18 was a conflict which engulfed the whole world, directly or indirectly.nbsp; An imperialist world war tugged the new Union of South Africa and its people into a series of separate but connected conflicts - from the domestic Afrikaner Rebellion on the highveld, through the sands of German South West Africa, the steamy bush of German East Africa, and on to the mud and blood of France and Flanders.nbsp; This book is the first general study of the complex ways in which South Africans experienced the impact of the First World War, and responded to its demands, burdens and opportunities. Told with his customary narrative energy and style, Bill Nasson's new history is a lively account not only of how South Africa fought the war, but also of the miscalculations and illusions that surrounded its involvement, and of how South African society came to imagine and remember that great and terrible conflict. Softcover. English. Penguin. 2008. ISBN: 9780143025351. 300pp. Good condition in softcover, signed and inscribed on title page. Book No: 2002140

Hardcover. English. Maskew Miller. 1921. 404pp illustrated with photos & maps. Fair to good condition in brown boards. Foxing on cut fore-edges and sporadically throughout. The great thriller writer and statesman John Buchan, author of The 39 Steps and other classics wrote this official history of the South African Forces in France as a homage to a country he had come to know and love as a British administrator after the Boer War. The South African brigade, raised from South African and Rhodesian regiments were sent to Egypt in 1915; and arrived in France the following year where they were attached to the 9th Scottish Division. They saw hard fighting during the Somme Offensive Ð particularly the bitter battles in and around Delville Wood and the Butte de Warlencourt. In 1917 they were in action at Arras and Cambrai; and in 1918 took part in resisting the German Spring offensives on the River Lys, and the Allied counter-offensives which culminated in the Armistice. The work of a great writer, this history is illustrated with photos & maps.

University of KwaZulu Natal Press, Hardcover with laminated boards. There is some staining to the page edges but otherwise a nice copy.  This book chronicles the life, times and poetry of extraordinary Xhosa praise poet, the late David Yali-Manisi, and his growing friendship and fruitful working relationship with the author. Jeff Opland is a renowned scholar who is recognised world-wide as a foremost authority on Xhosa izibongo or praises. His perceptive account gives insight not only into Manisi himself, but the complex art form of praise poetry - a spontaneous performance art of extraordinary subtlety and sophistication that, as Opland notes, embodies in itself the ancestral culture, history and politics of the Xhosa nation. What is unique about this book is the personal dimension that Opland brings to the subject, fusing impeccable scholarship with self-reflective and autobiographical narrative. The book incorporates a variety of styles, from autobiographical to verbatim interview, and its shift of voice reflect the author's own internal journey as his deepening friendship with Manisi works its humanising alchemy. Opland assumes, increasingly, the role of conduit for Manisi's dynamic but tragically undervalued talent. The book is a celebration of the supreme talent of a gifted African poet, and the interaction of a black and a white South African reaching out to each other.

1991. Hard cover, 374 pages. Very good condition. Under 1kg. In this book James Ambrose Brown does more than write a campaign history: he draws the reader into the emotional and national frenzy of colonial politics in German East Africa during the 1916 - 1918 campaign and the annexations of African territories that preceded it. This sets the stage for the narrative that chronicles the major role that South Africa played in this war in tropical Africa. It was a campaign in Tanganyika remarkable for the suffering, hardships and stubborn courage on both sides. This story of human endurance is presented with the freshness of personally recorded experiences of officers and men who fought in what is now called Tanzania, and tells for the first time the important function that South African volunteers played under the command of General Jan Smuts.
