Splinternuwe hardeband met stofjas en 158 bladsye. R50 posgeld in SA.

The story of the doings of the British legion under Sir de Lacy Evans in Spain is but little known. The expedition was a failure, and that from no want of heroic courage on the part of the soldiers, but from the most scandalous neglect and ill-treatment by the Government of Queen Christina. So gross was this neglect that within six months of their arrival in the Peninsula nearly five thousand, that is to say half the Legion had either died from want, privation or fever in the hospitals of Vittoria, or were invalided home.[contact-form][contact-field label='Name' type='name' required='1'/][contact-field label='Email' type='email' required='1'/][contact-field label='Website' type='url'/][contact-field label='Comment' type='textarea' required='1'/][/contact-form]

Postcard addressed to Mrs.Ernest Oppenheimer, Kimberley, South Africa, 1906, original, text in french, postmarks Kenley (London) and Kimberley (South Africa), 135 x 87 mm, condition: good.   Translation of text from French to English (with errors), 'Thank you for your card, Am happy that you had a good trip, Your new life is starting, Be Happy!  Raymond sends his best wishes (friendship, love) with the thanks (sic) of the both of us. Affectionately yours,  (Pino or Dino or Jino).   Sir Ernest Oppenheimer joined Dunkelbuhler & Company, a London diamond brokerage, in 1897, and was sent out to South Africa in 1902.    Mary Lina "May Lina" Pollack, the daughter of an english stockbroker married Ernest Oppenheimer in London in June of 1906 and left for the diamond center of Kimberley in the Northern Cape (South Africa) shortly afterwards. This postcard arrived in Kimberley on the 15th August 1906, less than two months after the wedding. The couple had two sons. It is noteworthy that the London postmark is Kenley, to the south of the capital and lying in what is known as the stockbroker belt, a' green'  residential corridor or belt favoured by the professional classes. The offices of Dunkelbuhler & Company were in Hatton Garden.  The Hatton Garden Diamond District is an area within Holborn, depicted in pictorial on the card.                 Sir Ernest Oppenheimer was associated with De Beers and founded the Anglo American Corporation                  De Beers is currently (2016) responsible for approximately 35% of the world's diamond production.                             Sir Ernest Oppenheimer is regarded as the founder of modern South Africa.                                                                                                    Offered by an established dealer in rare books and documents located in Johannesburg.

A CROWNER JOHN MYSTERY FIGURE OF HATE BY BERNARD KNIGHT - PAPERBACK IN EXCELLENT CONDITION - PG 374 Exeter, 1195: At a local jousting day, there's a serious altercation between Hugh Peverel, lord of Sampford Peverel, near Tiverton, and a stranger by the name of Reginald de Charterai. Two days later, Hugh's body is found in a barn, stabbed in the back. Is de Charterai to blame? The county coroner, Sir John de Wolfe, soon finds plenty of other suspects for the killing of the almost universally hated Hugh Peverel. All three of his brothers had a motive: two for the succession and the third to steal Hugh's attractive young wife, Beatrice. It's no secret that Beatrice herself detested her adulterous husband, as did his mother-in-law, Adelina. Another suspect is Godwin Thatcher, a Saxon villager whose two sons were hanged some months earlier, being arbitrarily sentenced by Hugh at his manorial court. Then there's the manor reeve, Warin Fishacre, who harboured a deep grudge against his master for taking the virginity of his daughter, Maud, just before her marriage. With so many suspects to choose from, Sir John is confronted with one of the most difficult cases of his distinguished career. Detection and suspense are combined with historical authenticity - Daily Mail Published: 2005, Publisher: Pocket Books
