SIGNED COPY . Soft cover. 122 pages. Good condition. Bottom corner worn. Under 1kg.  The film Goodbye Bafana tells of South Africa’s long walk to freedom through the relationship between racist prison warder, James Gregory, and prisoner number , Nelson Mandela. This was undoubtedly a captivating way to tell the story from both a political and human perspective. But given the overtly spiritual and religious character of communities across apartheid’s political and racial divides the story seemed to lack the very narrative that has always connected oppressed and oppressor.  In A time to speak Harry Wiggett, priest and poet – and prison chaplain to Nelson Mandela both on Robben Island and at Pollsmoor – deepens the picture

Signed & inscribed by the author, Elizabeth Robertson Campbell. Softcover. . Published by the author. 208 pages. It is said that truth is stranger than fiction. Elizabeth Robertson Cambell gives us a story that is so shocking, thrilling, harrowing, and heartbreaking, that it reads like a novel. Hers is a self-published book that has found its way from her home in South Africa all the way around the world, passed from country to country through Europe to the United States, from reader to reader who whispered, "You won't believe this..." Elizabeth Campbell live in Israel and fell in love with a Jewish man. Together they overcame religious and cultural differences, life-threatening political and public persecution, separation...only to be put to the ultimate test of their love. SIGNED BY AUTHOR. 2004. Hard cover. 240 pages. Very good condition. Under 1kg. During the twentieth century, popular opinion about the Boer War underwent a fascinating and telling metamorphosis From Dolly Gray to Sarie Marais gives recognition to a largely unacknowledged but substantial body of popular historical writing over a period of one hundred years that reflects hopes, fears, perceptions and prejudices and memories of ordinary people: popular memory in fiction. The writing about the Boer War in the popular press and fiction provides vivid insights into what ordinary people thought and felt (or were supposed to have thought or felt) about the Anglo-Boer conflict. But more than that, popular culture often gives vivid and interesting insights into the contemporary concerns of writers and their readers of a particular era. In this respect it often maps interesting historical and ideological changes in the South African experience from imperialism through union to the Apartheid era.

SIGNED COPY Roan Antelope Books, 1997. Hard cover with dust cover, 283 pages. Very good condition. Tightly bound, neat and clean. The  dust cover has minor wear. Sellotape marks in front and back. Name in front scratched out. U nder 1kg. John Edmond takes us through Rhodesia's major events, highlighting the early rulers, Mzilikazi and Shaka Zulu, right up to the last century. In this memoir, he takes us from his childhood, through the bush war and UDI to the stepping down of Ian Smith and beyond. Moving to Johannesburg, the author, already a renowned musician, breaks into the industry in Johannesburg, South Africa, eventually running the Gallo Music Company. What makes this book particularly interesting is the inclusion of the lyrics of the words to the huge number of songs he wrote which reflect the history and events of those times. His work took him all over the world, but the bush always called him back, often to dangerous areas of Zimbabwe when he frequently was called upon to entertain the troops.

SIGNED   BY JEFF OPLAND.   University of Kwazulu-Natal Press, . Hard cover, 389 pages. Immaculate condition.   Under 1kg. This book chronicles the life, times and poetry of extraordinary Xhosa praise poet, the late David Yali-Manisi, and his growing friendship and fruitful working relationship with the author. Jeff Opland is a renowned scholar who is recognised world-wide as a foremost authority on Xhosa izibongo or praises. His perceptive account gives insight not only into Manisi himself, but the complex art form of praise poetry - a spontaneous performance art of extraordinary subtlety and sophistication that, as Opland notes, embodies in itself the ancestral culture, history and politics of the Xhosa nation. What is unique about this book is the personal dimension that Opland brings to the subject, fusing impeccable scholarship with self-reflective and autobiographical narrative. The book incorporates a variety of styles, from autobiographical to verbatim interview, and its shift of voice reflect the author's own internal journey as his deepening friendship with Manisi works its humanising alchemy. Opland assumes, increasingly, the role of conduit for Manisi's dynamic but tragically undervalued talent. The book is a celebration of the supreme talent of a gifted African poet, and the interaction of a black and a white South African reaching out to each other.
