SIGNED BY AUTHOR, JACK KROS. Ashanti, 1992. Hard cover with dust cover. 318 pages. Very good condition. Tightly bound, neat and clean. Under 1kg. War in Italy by Jack Kros is the eighth release in the "South Africans at War" series. The book boasts many photographs and maps, some of which have not been published before. The Ashanti series as a whole undoubtedly contributes to a greater awareness of South Africa's often understated contribution to some of the major global conflicts of the 20th century.

1989 first edition hardcover with dust jacket and394 pages in very neat condition. Signed by Wood on title page. R65 postage in SA. When the Rhodesian Army recruited André Dennison in 1975, it secured the services of a hardened veteran of four of the minor wars of the 1950s and 1960s. Thus he was the most appropriate choice as the first Officer Commanding 'A' Company of the new 2nd Battalion of the Rhodesian African Rifles. André Dennison  kept a meticulous record of the daily life of his 'A' Company, writing up his war diaries every night and eventually, when convalescing from wounds, transcribing them into a single volume. He wrote in the dry, humorous style of the professional soldier, sparing little pity for his enemy while displaying deep affection and admiration for his men as he chronicled their exploits.

SIGNED COPY Roan Antelope Books, 1997. Hard cover with dust cover, 283 pages. Very good condition. Tightly bound, neat and clean. The  dust cover has minor wear. Sellotape marks in front and back. Name in front scratched out. U nder 1kg. John Edmond takes us through Rhodesia's major events, highlighting the early rulers, Mzilikazi and Shaka Zulu, right up to the last century. In this memoir, he takes us from his childhood, through the bush war and UDI to the stepping down of Ian Smith and beyond. Moving to Johannesburg, the author, already a renowned musician, breaks into the industry in Johannesburg, South Africa, eventually running the Gallo Music Company. What makes this book particularly interesting is the inclusion of the lyrics of the words to the huge number of songs he wrote which reflect the history and events of those times. His work took him all over the world, but the bush always called him back, often to dangerous areas of Zimbabwe when he frequently was called upon to entertain the troops.

SIGNED BY AUTHOR. 2004. Hard cover. 240 pages. Very good condition. Under 1kg. During the twentieth century, popular opinion about the Boer War underwent a fascinating and telling metamorphosis From Dolly Gray to Sarie Marais gives recognition to a largely unacknowledged but substantial body of popular historical writing over a period of one hundred years that reflects hopes, fears, perceptions and prejudices and memories of ordinary people: popular memory in fiction. The writing about the Boer War in the popular press and fiction provides vivid insights into what ordinary people thought and felt (or were supposed to have thought or felt) about the Anglo-Boer conflict. But more than that, popular culture often gives vivid and interesting insights into the contemporary concerns of writers and their readers of a particular era. In this respect it often maps interesting historical and ideological changes in the South African experience from imperialism through union to the Apartheid era.

Signed by Chris Schoeman. 2011. Hard cover with dust cover; 248 pages. Very good condition. Publisher sticker in front. Under 1kg. At the outbreak of the Second Anglo-Boer war in 1899, a large number of Hollanders and Dutch expatriates joined the Boers, their reasons ranging from loyalty to their common ancestry to strong anti-British sentiments and a search for adventure. Brothers in arms documents the trials and tribulations of these volunteers – most of them unaccustomed to the harsh landscape and climate of South Africa.  Quotations and personal anecdotes from their diaries and memoirs vividly bring to life their hardships on commando, the thunder and chaos of battle, and the trauma of comrades falling around them. Some of the prominent figures in the book are Cornelius van Gogh, brother of the painter Vincent van Gogh; the Dutch artist Frans Oerder, who became the Transvaal’s first official war artist; Jochem van Bruggen, four-times winner of the coveted Hertzog Prize for Afrikaans literature; and Rev. Herman van Broekhuizen, who played rugby for South Africa in 1896 and later served as South African ambassador in The Hague.  Brothers in Arms   covers the full spectrum of the Hollanders' roles as soldiers at the various battle fronts, ambulance personnel and military attaches, and their life in prisoner-of-war camps overseas.
