The sequel, however, was a massive disappointment and seemed to prove that the Driver formula could only ever work again on the next generation of consoles. Now finally Driver 3 (or DRIV3R as it insists on calling itself) is here, and although it's not the disaster that the last game was it's still a considerable disappointment. As you would expect from developers Reflections, who also did Stuntman and the original Destruction Derby, the car handling and physics are excellent--perhaps some of the best ever seen. However, the artificial intelligence of your opponent drivers is almost laughably poor and the incredibly detailed graphics, which look so good in the screenshots, come at the expensive of some disappointingly short draw distances, with buildings and backgrounds suddenly popping up as if out of nowhere. The game itself is now very much influenced by Grand Theft Auto and you can get out of your car and hijack other vehicles. DRIV3R is still predominantly mission-based, though, and unfortunately the difficulty curve is still as frustratingly uneven as ever with some missions seemingly almost superhumanly hard. Theres also a new power-up system replacing the "orbs" of previous games with "candy". These allow characters to transform into different forms to avoid traps and nobble other players, ranging from an airplane, to a bowling ball and a vampire. Of course whats most anticipated about the game is the 70 plus different mini-games, as usual ordered into 1 vs. 3, 2 vs. 2 and free-for-all games. These involve such activities as using the Wii remote to ride a water ski, tightrope walking, lassoing barrels, paddling a rowing boat with a partner, shooting on a target range and being the first to give your pet Chomp a wash. The games and presentation may all seem very cute but as ever the game is an expert at tempting you to cheat and conspire against your fellow players at every opportunity, making this the one family board game you wont mind having an argument over. The first game was a very decent pastiche of Metal Gear Solid, but subsequent sequels seemed to become increasingly less so, to the point where this fourth title is really make or break for the series. The Omega Strain 's big new feature, as with many sequels nowadays, is that the game is now playable online, and rather than being an afterthought or grossly simplified version of the single player mode there's actually an impressive attempt to put the whole game online, where it's playable by up to four people at a time. The only problem is that because the online and offline modes are so similar this actually means that if you know what you're doing, and particularly if you've got microphone headsets to co-ordinate yourselves with, it all becomes rather easy--a fact that a rather intrusive time limit cannot really balance out. But the problem with the online mode isn't really that it's too easy but that the basic gameplay of the single player mode just doesn't cut the mustard anymore. Considering the advances made in Metal Gear Solid 3, the Syphon Filter franchise just seems to be treading water and the rather weak graphics, stodgy controls and generally uninspired level design are rather more typical of Syphon Filter 2 and 3 than the original. Now finally Driver 3 (or DRIV3R as it insists on calling itself) is here, and although it's not the disaster that the last game was it's still a considerable disappointment. As you would expect from developers Reflections, who also did Stuntman and the original Destruction Derby, the car handling and physics are excellent--perhaps some of the best ever seen. However, the artificial intelligence of your opponent drivers is almost laughably poor and the incredibly detailed graphics, which look so good in the screenshots, come at the expensive of some disappointingly short draw distances, with buildings and backgrounds suddenly popping up as if out of nowhere. The game itself is now very much influenced by Grand Theft Auto and you can get out of your car and hijack other vehicles. DRIV3R is still predominantly mission-based, though, and unfortunately the difficulty curve is still as frustratingly uneven as ever with some missions seemingly almost superhumanly hard.
