This item is sold brand new. It is ordered on demand from our supplier and is usually dispatched within 7 - 11 working days In this second English-language edition of one of his most notable works, Miguel Leon-Portilla explores the Maya Indians' remarkable concepts of time. At the book's first appearance Evon Z. Vogt, Curator of Middle American Ethnology in Harvard University, predicted that it would become "a classic in anthropology," a prediction borne out by the continuing critical attention given to it by leading scholars. Like no other people in history, the ancient Maya were obsessed by the study of time. Their sages framed its cycles with tireless exactitude. Yet their preoccupation with time was not limited to calendrics; it was a central trait in their evolving culture. In this absorbing work Leon-Portilla probes the question, What did time really mean for the ancient Maya in terms of their mythology, religious thought, worldview, and everyday life? In his analysis of key Maya texts and computations, he reveals one of the most elaborate attempts of the human mind to penetrate the secrets of existence. The Second Creation deals with some of the most important issues confronting us today: genetic engineering and cloning, and the control that science has over the process of life. Written by the noted science author Colin Tudge, the book is based on interviews with Ian Wilmut and Keith Campbell, the scientists who cloned Dolly the sheep. Its aim is to explain the story of how and why they came to cloning sheep and the implications for the future, from curing diseases to human cloning. But that's not easy to convey simply, according to Ian Wilmut: The full story is, however, inescapably complicated. The science and technology of cloning, at least by our method, takes us into some of the most esoteric reaches of biology... Their subject is complex and requires careful reading, but the reward is worth the effort. Inevitably, the issue of human cloning is looked at in some detail, and all three of the authors find the idea repugnant and do not believe society will accept it: The pressures for human cloning are powerful; but, although it seems likely that somebody, at some time, will attempt it, we need not assume that it will ever become a common or significant feature of human life. The book contains a comprehensive glossary to explain the scientific terms and abbreviations.

2001 first edition with 237 pages in good condition. R46 postage in SA. Who were "The Strange Ones"? In this fascinating study of heritage, Brenda Sullivan expands on her investigation of a "pre-San" race from her first book, "Spirit of the Rocks." She dismisses the theory that all rock art is the work of the Bushmen, based on her research that the San married outside their clans and thus roamed throughout sub-Saharan Africa for millennia. The San refer to rock engravings as the work of their ancestors. Brenda Sullivan launches into a compelling study of the San bloodlines based on evidence of their wanderings and the knowledge that Africa was circumnavigated for the second time as early as 470 BCE at the request of the Carthaginian king, Xerxes. She emphasizes the preservation of South African rock engravings. "In South Africa the emphasis on fertility, as evinced by the engraved symbols and figures recognizable as such by traditional healers and diviners, and the lack of rock engravings depicting scenes of violence or brutality, should awaken in a reader's mind the urgency of a universal need to respect Earth, our Mother - and to restore to harmony the things of this Earth, this Eden," says Sullivan

"Second Voyage Dans L'Interieur De L'Afrique, Par Le Cap De Bonne Esperance, Dans Les Annees 1783, 84 et 85; Par F. LeVaillant" All three volumes of the second voyage of Francois Le Vaillant into the interior of South Africa via the Cape of Good Hope. Published in Paris by H.J. Jansen in 1795. Date of publication indicated as 'Year Three of the Republic' on the title page, as in the first three years after the French Revolution. All three volumes rebound in black pigskin. All 22 plates present. Two of the fold-out plates have a tear on one of their folds but with no loss. A circular shadow can be observed on the title pages of all three volumes but overall the contents are in good condition. Mendelssohn, volume I, pages 889, 890, & 892: 'His description is unique for this period, as little information respecting these regions had been published up to this date'. The second expedition was to Namaqualand, Damaraland, Bechcuanaland and the Kalahari Desert. It provides an interesting and early narrative of South Africa at a time when it was little known. The plates include that of a giraffe and of a hippopotamus, which were little known then, the local people, and several views.   A classic work on African travel which was a primary source for many later travelers including Adulphe Delegorgue.

Winston Churchill, The Second World War Complete in all Six Volumes, First or Revised Editions Title: The Second World War - Six Volumes Publisher: Publisher: Cassell & Co. Ltd., London, 1948-54 Publication Date: 1948-54 Binding: Hardcover Book Condition: Very Good, No Dust Jacket Editions: 1st Edition First edition (hardcover) in six volumes The Gathering Storm (1948) Their Finest Hour (1950) - New edition, revised, published 1950 The Grand Alliance (1950) The Hinge of Fate (1951) Closing the Ring (1952) Triumph and Tragedy (1954) Black cloth covers, spines lettered in gilt, with WINSTON | CHURCHILL, main title, roman numeral I-VI at head and CASSELL at foot. Top page edges of Volumes 3, 5 & 6 are stained dark red. 8vo.  All volumes are variously illustrated with many foldout maps and diagrams. Churchill's complete six volume classic memoirs on WWII, the period from the end of the First World War to July 1945. Churchill labelled the "moral of the work" as follows: "In War: Resolution, In Defeat: Defiance, In Victory: Magnanimity, In Peace: Goodwill".  The titles of the volumes are  The Gathering Storm; Their Finest Hour; The Grand Alliance; The Hinge of Fate; Closing the Ring; and Triumph and Tragedy. Volume I with author's paper slip note tipped-in after his preface. 6 volumes. Some illustrated with plates of facsimiles and maps (many of which are folding); charts and tables. The first volume of Winston Churchills six-volume memoirs as a statesman and leader during World War II, The Gathering Storm begins with his thoughts on World War I - and how its ending laid the foundations for the next global conflict. The second volume of Winston Churchills six-volume autobiographical account of World War II, Their Finest Hour picks up where The Gathering Storm left off - with the fall of France to Hitlers forces and Britains stand as the lone defender against the Nazi war machine. In this third volume of a six-volume series, Their Finest Hour, Winston Churchill draws upon thousands of personal memoranda, war correspondence, and internal government memos to describe the full entry of the US into World War II - adding considerable strength to British military operations and morale. At the onset of the fourth volume of Churchills eyewitness account of World War II,  The Grand Alliance, prospects are bleak for the Allies. The Japanese have captured Singapore and Burma in a series of bold offensives; meanwhile, aggressive U-boat attacks in the Atlantic were preventing American, British, and Dutch shipping vessels from supplying the war effort. Rommel was turning the tide toward Axis forces in North Africa. Meanwhile, Hitler was pushing inexorably toward Stalingrad. Churchill faced challenges in the field--and considerable criticism at home. The fifth in Winston Churchills six-volume account of World War II,  Closing the Ring, picks up at the dawn of a more optimistic time for the Allied forces. After considerable struggle, the balance has finally shifted toward the Allies - and in this volume Churchill documents the drive toward victory. In the final volume of the six-volume series The Second World War, titled  Triumph and Tragedy, the tide of war has turned in the Allies favor and Japan's surrender is imminent. Even so, the Allies find themselves powerless to halt the advance of Russia and lay the groundwork for lasting peace.  Churchill himself is seeing his time of leadership come to a close. All of Churchill’s revisions and “overtake corrections” were scrupulously entered by Cassell which, combined with two- and three-color textual maps and many finely printed folding maps, makes this English Edition aesthetically pleasing.  Condition:  The books are in very good condition, tightly bound, with foxing throughout. Specific photos available on request.

This item is sold brand new. It is ordered on demand from our supplier and is usually dispatched within 4 - 8 working days Before the Malazan Empire, there was a time that set the stage for all those tales yet to be told...The winter is bitter. Civil war threatens Kurald Galain for the warrior Urusander's army has begun its march on the city of Kharkanas. Led by the ruthless Hunn Raal, it intends to cast aside Mother Dark's consort, Draconus, and set Urusander himself on the throne beside the Living Goddess. Those who would stand in the way of the rebels lie scattered and weakened - leaderless since Anomander went in search of an estranged brother. In his stead, Silchas Ruin resolves to gather the Houseblades of the Highborn families to him, and to resurrect the legendary Hust Legion, but time is not on his side. Far to the west, an unlikely army musters. It seeks an enemy without form, in a place none can find. And yet Hood's call has been heard and the long-abandoned city of Omtose Phellack is now home to a rabble of new arrivals: Dog-Runners from the south, Jheck warriors, and blue-skinned strangers from across the Western Sea have come to offer Hood their swords. From the distant mountains and isolated valleys of the North, Thel Akai arrive to pledge themselves in this seemingly impossible war. Soon, they will set forth with weapons drawn under the banners of the living in pursuit of Death itself. Such events presage chaos, and now magic bleeds into this realm. Unconstrained, mysterious and savage, it begins to run loose and wild and following its scent, seeking the places of wounding and hurt - new and ancient entities gather. In a world becoming rotten with sorcery, can honour truly exist? Features Summary The winter is bitter. Historical Publication Society, 1979. Hard cover with dust cover; 112 pages. Very good condition. The dust cover has some minor edgewear. Name inscription in front.  Under 1kg. An account of the irregular operations by Louis Botha's forces in the field during which they launched attacks on the Itala and Fort Prospect frontier posts. During this time they diverted thousands of British troops from planned operations on the Highveld and restocked their ammunition and supplies by capturing a 31-wagon convoy and then retreating away from the closing British cordon. The results showed that the burghers in the field were still militarily significant at that time.

It is ordered on demand from our supplier and is usually dispatched within 7 - 11 working days In 1935 Evelyn Shillington started a diary, little knowing the years of turmoil it would cover, and how insightful her experiences as an army wife would be to the following generations. Eve joined her beloved husband, Captain Rex Shillington, whenever she could on his postings giving her a unique view into army life. Through the abdication crisis, to the turbulent years of the Second World War and ending in war-ravaged Italy, Eve documented it all with an inimitable spirit and brave humour. The diaries lay forgotten in an attic for years until an enterprising antiques dealer discovered them by chance. Published seventy years after Eve wrote in her diary for the last time, they offer a new perspective into life on the home front, a first-hand account that was almost lost forever. Hardback. English. Tor. 2010. In fair condition. Robert Jordan' Facsimile signature on title page. The Last Battle has started. The seals on the Dark One's prison are crumbling. The Pattern itself is unraveling, and the armies of the Shadow have begun to boil out of the Blight. The sun has begun to set upon the Third Age. Perrin Aybara is now hunted by specters from his past: Whitecloaks, a slayer of wolves, and the responsibilities of leadership. All the while, an unseen foe is slowly pulling a noose tight around his neck. To prevail, he must seek answers in Tel'aran'rhiod and find a way--at long last--to master the wolf within him or lose himself to it forever. Meanwhile, Matrim Cauthon prepares for the most difficult challenge of his life. The creatures beyond the stone gateways--the Aelfinn and the Eelfinn--have confused him, taunted him, and left him hanged, his memory stuffed with bits and pieces of other men's lives. He had hoped that his last confrontation with them would be the end of it, but the Wheel weaves as the Wheel wills. The time is coming when he will again have to dance with the Snakes and the Foxes, playing a game that cannot be won. The Tower of Ghenjei awaits, and its secrets will reveal the fate of a friend long lost. This latest novel of Robert Jordan's #1 New York Times bestselling series--the second based on materials he left behind when he died in 2007--brings dramatic and compelling developments to many threads in the Pattern. The end draws near. Dovie'andi se tovya sagain. It's time to toss the dice.

It's as though you went out one warm evening - an evening fizzing with delicious potential, so ripe and sticky-sweet you can taste it on the air - for just one drink... and woke up two days later in a skip. Except you're not in a skip, you're in an estate car, on the way to an out-of-town shopping mall to buy a balance bike, a roof rack and some stackable storage boxes.'Miranda Sawyer's midlife crisis began when she was 44. It wasn't a traditional one. She didn't run off with a Pilates teacher, or blow thousands on a trip to find herself. From the outside, all remained the same. Work, kids, marriage, mortgage, blah. Days, weeks and months whizzed past as she struggled with feeling - knowing - that she was over halfway through her life. It seemed only yesterday that she was 29, out and about.Out of Time is not a self-help book. It's an exploration of this sudden crisis, this jolt. It looks at how our tastes, and our bodies, change as we get older. It considers the unexpected new pleasures that the second half of life can offer, from learning to code to taking up running (slowly). Speaking to musicians and artists, friends and colleagues, Miranda asks how they too have confronted midlife, and the lessons, if any, that they've learned along the way. It is ordered on demand from our supplier and is usually dispatched within 24 hours Sewsunker "Papwa" Sewgolum (1930¿1978) was a South African golfer who carved a niche for himself in golfing folklore when he became the first golfer of colour to win a provincial open in South Africa (in 1963). Sewgolum, a former caddie, with his wrong-way-round grip (left hand beneath his right), beat 103 white golfers in the Natal Open at the Durban Country Club. He became a symbol of the sports boycott movement when pictures of him receiving his trophy outdoors in the rain, because, due to apartheid, he was not allowed to enter the clubhouse, were published across the world. In 1965 he beat Gary Player to win the Natal Open for the second time. He also won the Dutch Open in 1959, 1960 and 1964. However, the dream was to be cut short. At the peak of his career, Papwa was banned by the apartheid government from participating in or attending any PGA tournaments. Crushing him further, they also withdrew his passport, denying him the right to play internationally. This slowly broke his spirit, leaving him with nothing but a dream. This is the story of one man who triumphed again unbelievable odds, only to have his dream snatched from him. Written as fiction, this is a uniquely South African story told by a master storyteller.
