Hardcover with protected DJ. University of Natal Press and Killie Campbell Africana Library Durban pages inc index. Edited by Ruth Edgecombe. DJ has a couple of minor nicks to edges and some grubby marks but is now protected. Slight foxing but generally the book is in good condition with no inscriptions. (see pics below). Please feel free to ask questions.   " The rarity and interest of Bishop Colenso's First Steps of the Zulu Mission made it an obvious choice for inclusion in this Reprint Series. Colenso's fresh and perceptive observations of the Zulu kingdom and his lively day-by-day account of his journey make this a rich historical source. Different perspectives on this journey are provided in 'Three native accounts of the visit of the Bishop of Natal in September and October to Umpande, King of the Zulus', which were written by three young Zulu converts who accompanied him. Also included in this volume are some of the lesser-known and less easily accessible missionary publications of Colenso. Together with 'First Steps' they constitute a comprehensive statement of the essential ideas and beliefs that shaped the first eleven years of his life as a missionary after his consecration as first Bishop of Natal in . The usefulness of this material extends beyond the interests of the student of missionary endeavour. For here there is vital information on the early history of the Zulu kingdom under Mpande. For the historian of ideas, fascinating light is cast on the interaction of intellectual currents emanating from England, and ideas and attitudes shaped in a colonial and a traditional context. In a sense Colenso operated simultaneously in three kinds of environment: as thinker in the intellectual world of England, as Bishop in the colony of Natal and as missionary confronting the traditional world of the Zulu."   Please look at my other book listings as I am happy to combine postage should you wish to purchase more than one item. 10% discount will be given for orders of 5 or more books packaged and posted together.   Zulu Zulu Foxtrot: To Hell And Back With Koevoet - Arn Durand - Zebra - 2016 - Paperback. This is the explosive follow-up to Zulu Zulu Golf, covering Arn Durand s next few years in Koevoet, the most deadly fighting force involved in the Border War. After moving to the unit Zulu Foxtrot, Durand went deeper into Angola than before and was involved in more contacts with the enemy, which he describes in nerve-shattering detail. Balancing the action is a dramatic human story, as Durand faces the tragic death of his commander, Frans Conradie, one of the pioneers of Koevoet, who had become a mentor to him. Written in the same gripping, novelistic style as its predecessor, Zulu Zulu Foxtrot recreates the experience of being in the heat of battle and delves more deeply into the psyche of the modern warrior."

BLACK & WHITE PHOTOGRAPHS x 2 =  BOER WAR = NATAL WAR ZULU WAR = NATAL NATIVE CONTINGENT = 2nd PHOTO. Copyright local History Museum   he Anglo-Zulu war was fought in 1879 between the British Empire and the Zulu Kingdom. Following Lord Carnarvon's successful introduction of Federation in Canada, it was thought that similar political effort, coupled with military campaigns, might succeed with the African kingdoms, tribal areas and Boer Republics in South Africa. In 1874, Sir Henry Bartle Frere was sent to South Africa as High Commissioner for the British Empire to bring such plans into being. Among the obstacles were the presence of the independent states of the South African Republic and the Kingdom of Zululand and its army. Frere, on his own initiative, without the approval of the British government and with the intent of instigating a war with the Zulu, had presented an ultimatum on 11 December 1878, to the Zulu king Cetshawyo with which the Zulu king could not comply, including disbanding his army and abandoning key cultural traditions.   Bartle Frere then sent Lord Chelmsford  to invade Zululand after this ultimatum was not met.  The war is notable for several particularly bloody battles, including an opening victory of the Zulu at the Battle of Isandlwana, followed by the defeat of a large Zulu army at Rorke's Drift  by a small force of British troops. The war eventually resulted in a British victory and the end of the Zulu nation's dominance of the region.   Sold as seen in the images. 1991. Hard cover with dust cover; 144 pages. Very good condition. Tightly bound, neat and clean. Under 1kg. When he wrote this little classic, which historians of the period rank alongside Morris's more famous Washing of the Spears, sir Reginald Coupland was the foremost living authority on the history of the British Empire.   In Zulu Battle Piece he describes, with swift and vivid strokes, the situation between whites and blacks, the great military qualities and terrifying military tactics of the Zulu warriors and the characters of the Englishmen, soldiers and politicians, involved in the disaster: and then having the consummate art and scholarship prepared the reader, he sets the great action in that strange, eerie land, until the reader can truly feel that he has lived through it himself. The aftermath brings him to Rorke's Drift and the gallant British stand that averted irretrieveable disater.   In his new introduction to this readable and concise work, Ian Knight discusses Coupland's thinking and sets the book in its proper historical and literary perspective.
