The Unitas Medal was instituted by the President of the Republic of South Africa on November 4, 1994. It was awarded to all ranks who were on the active strength of all seven constituent military forces from April 27, 1994 to May 10, 1994, to commemorate their amalgamation into the South African National Defence Force. It was also awarded to personnel of the British Military Advisory and Training Team which served in South Africa at the time. Mess dress. Ribbon included.

(b) Whilst rendering such service irrespective of the period of service, was injured or killed and was thus prevented from completing the required period of service. 1993 - Amendment to qualifying service was extended to combat terrorism and crime.
