This book is an updated version of the first and only history of the SADF Dog Centre unit from the old to the new, and also right up to the disbandment of this small and little known unit. It will skillfully guide you, with the help of richly illustrated photographic coverage from the origins of the SADF Dog Centre; along the pitfall-strewn path it had to wander in order to gain the important first-class knowledge necessary to function successfully on our borders. During the bush war phase, they started their experience when it was first deployed, as early as 1967. Ten years later their knowledge was exploited in a unit specially designed to cater for their abilities. Dog handlers of this unit, the South West Africa Specialist Unit, will tell the story of some of the personal experiences they encountered while doing their bit on the border. Although two handlers and eight dogs had to pay with their lives during skirmishes with the enemy, many a life was saved by the vigilance of mans best vriend. Two medals for bravery were awarded to dogs. Peet Coetzee was one of the pioneers of the dog unit, and served for 33 years in the SADF. It was waged between the apartheid South African Defence Force (SADF) and the armed forces of the communist MPLA government in Angola and the Peoples Republic of Cuba. Led by Soviet generals, the MPLA embarked on a grand offensive in order to knock out the pro-Western rebel movement UNITA in southeastern Angola. As UNITAs survival was crucial to South Africas military strategy in fighting its own counter-insurgency war against the South West African rebel movement SWAPO, the SADF stepped in with a single mechanised brigade and broke the back of the overwhelming MPLA offensive. After a lengthy rehabilitative period, he returned to active duty completing his military enlistment. Upon returning to the United States, he was reunited with his family and his 10-year-old Harley-Davidson motorcycle. The book relates why the South African government took the political risk in attacking the fortress in an external operation and examines the SWAPO claims that Cassinga was a refugee camp guarded by a few PLAN soldiers. It also explains why Sam Nujoma the SWAPO leader had no option but to perpetuate this falsehood. The battle, although a resounding success, suffered some setbacks which could have been disastrous to the South African paratroopers had they not maintained the initiative. The improvisations made by the commander Col Jan Breytenbach ensured that a flawed jump and poor intelligence did not adversely affect the outcome. The landmines laid by the South Africans, together with the brave actions of the South African Air Force pilots saved the day, allowing the remaining forces to withdraw safely. John Dovey did his National Service in the SADF in 1985-1986. He has served since then in three Citizen Force Regiments, and is still serving. This compilation of poems is his attempt to preserve some of the thoughts and feelings of the soldiers who were in the SADF during the "Border War" period. The poems in this compilation are mostly from that period. There are a few poems from Cubans and one from a British soldier, that fit into the theme of the compilation. Some are in English, some in Afrikaans and there is even one in Spanish. The poems are all heart-felt ones that reflect the mood and emotion of the times. There are a surprising number that deal with loneliness and fear, which two things any soldier will know are constant companions. This book is above all about the commonality of experience that all soldiers share, and about the human face of the individuals of which an "army" is comprised.
