Seated in the middle row, left, is Col.  Sir Pierre van Ryneveld,   Director of Air Services.   Sir Pierre van Ryneveld   was the founding commander of the South African Air Force (SAAF). He began his military career in World War I where he distinguished himself as a fighter ace. After the war, van Ryneveld was called back to South Africa by the Prime Minister Jan Smuts in order to set up the SAAF. He flew back home, across Africa, in a Vickers Vimy - a pioneering feat for which he was knighted. He served as CGS for sixteen years, including the whole of  World War II. Colonel van Ryneveld established the SAAF in 1920, and directed it until 1933, when he was promoted to Chief of the General Staff (CGS), in command of the Union Defence Forces. However, for the next four years the SAAF remained under van Ryneveld's direct control as no one was appointed as the Air Force's director until 1937.

GROUP OF SIX, COMPLETE TO FREDERICK MANTLE. ATTESTED IST ROYAL NATAL CARBINEERS, POSTED TO SOUTH AFRICAN AIR FORCE 30/9/1941. SERVED WITH 22 SQUADRON SAAF WHEN THEY WERE ON ANTI - SUBMARINE PATROLS FROM 19/4/43 TO 12/1/44. THIS WAS WHEN THE SQUADRON WAS BASED IN DURBAN, AND FLYING ANSON AND VENTURA AIRCRAFT, AS A WELDER.  THE ITALY STAR WOULD HAVE BEEN EARNED WHEN THE SQUADRON WAS IN GIBRALTER FROM 1944, ALTHOUGH THE RESEARCH DOES NOT CONFIRM THIS. HE WAS STILL ON STRENGTH OF THE SAAF IN SEPTEMBER 1945, PENDING DISCHARGE  ===================================================================================================

A Salute to the South African Air Force. First edition by Air Report, 1995. Hardcover with dust jacket in mint condition, previous owner's name on front end paper. The book salutes the South African Air Force, it's aircraft, crews and dedicated people who support them. Published to coincide with the SAAF's 75th anniversary. Through Herman Potgieter's stunning photographs and Linden Birn's text, this book describes a re-focused SAAF standing on the threshold of the new millenium. 200 pages with index. Tracked postage is R75.00.      

  ORIGINAL  and very rare uniform  that not many individuals had the need to own or wear as part of the SAAF. Prior to the war, this uniform would been worn for full dress occasions such as parades, funerals, royal functions, and only by career officers of which there were few. Many officers did not own uniforms like this as they were expensive and simply rented them. The dark blue tunic is worn with  red striped stirrup pants and patent leather boots with spurs. White gloves were regulation.  The tunic features a row of oversized  solid brass gilt buttons that are not found on any other uniform. This style was part of the army tradition that had carried on since the time of the RFC and the first world war. The later RAF had long since disbanded this style but since the SAAF retained army ranks and traditions, this uniform was retained. The high red collar features  beautifully embroidered SAAF collar devices, surmounted on a red wool high collar and outlined in gold wire russian braid. The full dress SAAF wing is  hand embroidered in bullion thread.  The pointed gilt bordered  sleeves are similar to the uniforms worn during the first world war and became obsolete by the twenties. Once WWII arrived, these uniforms were never worn again. This uniform for sale is missing the shoulder boards,the pilot wing is loose and so is one collar badge One button on the sidecap has been replaced by a Italian WW2 button and the cap badge is missing Label is intact in pocket of tunic.Tunic is a medium size with armpit to armpit being 46 cm.The pants is a 30 inch waist. Pre-1994 South African Air Force GOC's (General Officer Commanding) pennant (2nd in Command of the SAAF) Unusual item and quite difficult to find. Size is 900mm x 580mm. Good, used condition, with wind tears and a repair. No stamps or date. Tracked postage is R60.00.
