April 3] 1894 ¿ September 11, 1971) was a Russian politician who led the Soviet Union during part of the Cold War. He served as First Secretary of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union from 1953 to 1964, and as Chairman of the Council of Ministers, or Premier, from 1958 to 1964. Khrushchev was responsible for the de-Stalinization of the Soviet Union, for backing the progress of the early Soviet space program, and for several relatively liberal reforms in areas of domestic policy. Khrushchev's party colleagues removed him from power in 1964, replacing him with Leonid Brezhnev as First Secretary and Alexei Kosygin as Premier. The transfer of Crimea in 1954 was an administrative action of the Supreme Soviet which transferred the government of the Crimean peninsula from the Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic to the Ukrainian SSR.According to the Soviet Constitution (article 18), the borders of a republic within the Soviet Union could not be re-drawn without the agreement of the republic in question. The transfer was approved by the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the Soviet Union; however, according to article 33 of the constitution, the Presidium did not have the authority to do so. The constitutional change (articles 22 and 23) to accommodate the transfer was made several days after the decree issued by the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet. ____________________________________________________  Feel free to e-mail me with any questions.

Russia, Russian Cities, Petergof, Petrodvorets, Samson Fountain, Grand Cascade Edition Technical Specs Presentation Country:   Metal Purity:    Gold Plated, Gilded Box:   Year of Issue:   Weight:   1 oz CoA:   Face Value:   Dimensions:   40     Quality:       Mintage:     New token with capsule The fountains of the Grand Cascade are located below the grotto and on either side of it. Their waters flow into a semicircular pool, the terminus of the fountain-lined Sea Channel. In the 1730s, the large Samson Fountain was placed in this pool. It depicts the moment when Samson tears open the jaws of a lion, representing Russia's victory over Sweden in the Great Northern War, and is doubly symbolic. The lion is an element of the Swedish coat of arms, and one of the great victories of the war was won on St Samson's Day. From the lion's mouth shoots a 20-metre-high vertical jet of water, the highest in all of Peterhof. This masterpiece by Mikhail Kozlovsky was looted by the invading Germans during the Second World War. A replica of the statue was installed in 1947. ____________________________________________________  Feel free to e-mail me with any questions.

His eighteen-year term as General Secretary was second only to that of Joseph Stalin in duration. During Brezhnev's rule, the global influence of the Soviet Union grew dramatically, in part because of the expansion of the Soviet military during this time. His tenure as leader was marked by the beginning of an era of economic and social stagnation in the Soviet Union. ____________________________________________________  Feel free to e-mail me with any questions.

After an era of dynastic crisis, the House of Holstein-Gottorp, a cadet branch of the House of Oldenburg which reigned in Denmark, ascended the throne in 1762 with Peter III, a grandson of Peter I. All rulers from the middle of the 18th century to the revolution of 1917 were descended from that branch. Though officially known as the House of Romanov, these descendants of the Romanov and Oldenburg dynasties are sometimes referred to as Holstein-Gottorp-Romanov. ____________________________________________________  Feel free to e-mail me with any questions.

The Hidden Thread is a journey of revelation about the relationship between Soviet Russia and South Africa, hidden for most of its length. The story is told with insight and depth by Irina Filatova and Apollon Davidson, who have had a decades long association researching and writing on Russian and South African politics and history. This insightful work follows the often surprising twists and turns of the history of South Africas relationship with Russia and its people which started in the eighteenth century and is still very much alive today. The story evolves from the Russian volunteers who fought alongside the Boers in the Anglo-Boer War to South Africans who participated in the Russian revolution and civil war; from the Russian Jewish immigration to South Africa to the close involvement of the South African communists in the Communist International; from the Soviet consulates in South Africa and the activities of South Africas Friends of the Soviet Union Society during the Second World War to the vicissitudes of the Cold War and the hot war in Angola; from the SACP and ANCs relations with the USSR to the volte-face of perestroika and South Africas transition and to todays business, political, cultural and sometimes criminal connections between Russians and South Africans. Paperback, 568 pages Published March 2013

The Second World War was the final global conflict of the twentieth century. It involved more combatants, and a wider range of battlefield terrain than ay other conflict in history, from the frozen plains of Russia to the baking Libyan desert, and from the atools of the Pacific to the skies over Britain. In Turning the Tide, Nigel Cawthorne has taken a fresh look at the crucial battles which decided the outcome of the Second World War, beginning with the evacuation of Dinkirk in 1940, a feat that boosted the morale of a nation during its darkest hour, and reaching a climatic end with the final bloody reckoning between the Red Army and the Third Reich amongst the ruins of Berlin.
