Roger Ballen "Boarding House" Art Photography Book, BRAND NEW, STILL WRAPPED IN PLASTIC “It is difficult to explain this place except that I think it exists in some way or another in most people’s mind.” – Roger Ballen Roger Ballen’s photographs are like images from a waking dream: compelling and thought-provoking, with layers of rich details, flashes of dark humor, and an altered sense of place. Blurring the boundaries between documentary photography and art, his work is both a powerful social statement and a complex psychological study. Roger Ballen's a new collection showcasing over 70 black and white images, mostly unpublished, this is Ballen’s most formally sophisticated work to date. The tableaux have a greater emphasis on drawn and sculptural elements, and the sense of collaboration between the artist and his subjects is increasingly relevant. An introductory essay by photography curator David Travis addresses the work in an accessible way, looking at these images in the wider context of Ballen’s career.   Boarding House  is a space of transient residence, of comings and goings, of people sheltered in a place they are using for their immediate survival. Basic and fundamental, the structure is furnished with objects necessary for an elementary existence, decorated with evocative drawings, and littered throughout with animals. Remnants function there as physical symbols of events that have occurred in the space; broken pieces of a functional reality exist as the leftovers of scenarios that have been played out there. The altered sense of place of this temporary abode creates a sense of alienation, which acts as a jumping off point for the imagination to run wild.

It is ordered on demand from our supplier and is usually dispatched within 7 - 12 working days Agatha Christie's most audacious crime mystery, reissued to mark 90 years since it was first published with a facsimile cover from 1931. Roger Ackroyd knew too much. He knew the woman he loved had poisoned her first husband, that someone was blackmailing her, and that as a consequence she had just taken her own life. But as he read the letter that would tell him the identity of her mysterious blackmailer, he was stabbed to death in a locked room... The Murder of Roger Ackroyd is one of Agatha Christie's most brilliant detective novels and the book that catapulted her to worldwide renown. As a play, under the title of Alibi, it then enjoyed a long and successful run with Charles Laughton as Hercule Poirot. First published in May 1926 by Collins, and joining their Detective Story Club imprint in August 1931 to tie in with the release of the film version starring Austin Trevor as Poirot, The Murder of Roger Ackroyd remains as powerful and shocking today as when it was first published 90 years ago. THIS DETECTIVE STORY CLUB CLASSIC is introduced by crime fiction expert Tony Medawar, who investigates the book's pivotal role in Agatha Christie's success story. Features Summary Agatha Christie's most audacious crime mystery, reissued to mark 90 years since it was first published with a facsimile cover from 1931. Dorps: Small Towns of South Africa is about a part of ¿Old Africa¿ that is quickly disappearing. For many years, Roger Ballen, an American, has travelled widely throughout South Africa, visiting its scattered towns and villages. During this time he has developed a unique vision toward little-known corners and artifacts, trading stores, old houses and humble people. Textured with time, these photographs reveal the essence of these places. The vision is pure. It is direct. It does not rely upon photographic processing tricks. We can only marvel that the most commonplace subject matter becomes poetic, and that the fragment becomes an artistic unit. Perhaps no more intimate portrait exists of these towns.Looked at as a cumulative affirmation of an artist¿s vision and intention, these images define a body of work which is surely one of the purest and strongest aesthetic statements ever made in South African photography.Price: R2500.00Edition: First EditionPublished: 1986Publishers: Clifton PublicationsISBN: 0620092114 / 9780620092111Condition: Dustjacket is in good condition with a very small chips at the spine, and minor scuff marks on the corners - now covered in a protective plastic sleeve. This novel, written by a veteran science fiction anthologist, is not my cup of tea - after C.S. Lewis little remains to be said in the topic of good angels and bad - anyway the book looks very new. - The novel is told from the point of view of the angel Darien, who begins doubting whether God was correct in booting Lucifer out of Heaven. In response, God sends Darien on an Earthbound “Angelwalk” so he can experience firsthand all the nastiness of the modern world.  *N.B.*   If you buy more than one book from me on the same day you only pay R 6 extra postage for each of the additional books - See what else I have to offer, it might just be worth your while.

When World War I breaks out, Casement and Ward's longstanding political differences finally come to a head and when Ward and his teenage sons leave to fight on the frontlines for England, Casement begins to work alongside the Germans to help free Ireland from British rule. What results is tragic and riveting, as both men are forced to confront notions of love and betrayal in the face of the vastly different tracks their lives have taken.
